This is just totally unbelievable. How can Congress even consider something so blatantly unconstitutional without public outcry for their removal for even considering such a thing. This thread was spawned by this thread at DU- http://tinyurl.com/467ga The following comes from the link mentioned in that thread- http://tinyurl.com/66zhs

Action #1
ALERT: Drug Speech Censorship Bill Nearing Passage
Contact Legislators: Stop the Censorship Provisions of Bankruptcy Reform Act, and the Methamphetamine Anti-Proliferation Act!
Introduction

Both the Bankruptcy Reform Act and The Methamphetamine Anti-Proliferation Act may sound like a good ideas from their titles, but their effect would be to stop constitutionally protected speech on the Internet and in print, and there are several other very disturbing aspects.

The BANKRUPTCY REFORM ACT, H.R. 833, is in House/Senate conference and the closest to passing. It passed the House intact (as a bankruptcy reform measure), but passed the Senate with the full text of Methamphetamine Anti-Proliferation Act (see below) attached as a "rider", Title XVII.
The Methamphetamine Anti-Proliferation Act also remains in circulation as a stand-alone bill. H.R. 2987.

Some of the provisions H.R. 833 Title XVII/H.R. 2987 that EFF objects to:

* Makes it illegal to share information about harm reduction and growing hemp even for industrial purposes. Not only does it criminalize speech, it makes it illegal to even LINK TO sites with these types of articles and gives the government power to order Web sites censored and shut down without due process of law. It gives the DEA and the FBI the right to order ISPs to close down a site without notice to the owner on a police judgement call without an order from a court. This provision violates the First, Fourth and Fifths Amendments (free speech, freedom from unreasonable search and seizure, due process).
* H.R. 833 and H.R. 2987 will allow secret searches. This provision was beaten down before but is trying to come in through the back door again. The government could enter your home or office with a warrant, search or copy files from your computer and not tell you till months later. Another section of this bill removes the responsibility of the government to give an inventory of what was seized as is currently required under the law. This provision also violates the Fourth Amendment.
* The bill would also create new federal drug offences and incarcerate a whole new wave of low-level "drug offenders", this time for merely expressing themselves. This is a major threat to the First Amendment and American democracy in general.

There is a broad coalition of organizations and people opposing both H.R. 833 Title XVII and H.R. 2987. These include the ACLU, the Drug Reform Coordination Network, the Media Awareness Project, and the November Coalition among many others.

Constitution, hmm i vaguely remember something like that, didn't we lose that as a result of the war on drugs? I remember maybe ten years back reading newspaper arcticle about cows going to the slaughter house and one cow figured out what was going on and jumped out a large window to the street. The cow continued running with all the killers in tow, finally a cop shot it but still didn't stop it. they had to run it down with a car and pin it up against a overpass or something like that. Then they shot it to death. Sorry to tell such a macabre story but it don't take much to recognize the metaphor... Hold on tight!

Hay M.W. ...

Like the 'short story' ... I too remember those days... Now days, the younger "more educated" crowd believes that just because they study the Constitution, that makes it still true.... Seems you too know this is not the case anymore.

I'm not far from retirement and am seriously considering moving out of this country because it has become one much like that of the "Hammer and Sickle", if you know what I mean.

It's good to see many of the 'ol timer' crowd still here from B4 the Nov.2 timeline.

Hang on is right my friend..... I'm just itching for the day in '08 when we turn over a 'New Leaf" ... (pun definately intended) ... lol.gif

Take Care 'yall ...

Look Again

this is the 2000 Methamphetamine Anti-Proliferation Act.. While the underlying bill passed, the Censorship and Secret Search warrant provisions were stripped by an ad hoc bipartisan coalition in the House Judiciary Committee after the original package had unanimously passed the Senate.

Leading the fight on the House side was my Rep, Tammy Baldwin, who i persuaded to remove the Bill from the "Consent Calendar," forceing it through full subcommittee review. Next on board was Georgia ultra-Conservative (and Drugwar backer) Bob Barr, who was persuaded that the provisions would eventually be turned on firearms enthusiasts.

On her next weekend in Madison, Tammy asked "Ben, how did you get Bob Barr to call me?" It seems that in their initial 3 years of service on Judiciary, Barr, while polite in official meetings, had refused all of Tammy's efforts to engage him in informal conversation, even turning his back when she'd approach him in the hallway. They eventually became friends of a sort, and again collaborated in with very limited success, in attempting to strip the worst provisions of the Patriot Act before it's final passage, This time they were unable to stop the same Secret Search Warrant provisions that had been attached to this Meth Bill.

Others playing key roles in stopping the 2000 Meth Act's censorship provisions included Conyers, Franks, and Nadler among the Dems, and Jim Sensenbrenner and Henry Hyde for the Republicans.

Shortly after our success in the House, Senator Feingold told me that his failure to listen to me and oppose the Meth Act was his biggest regret of the year.

Many weren't too concerned when Klintoon tried censoring hemp talk and mmj talk on the internet. Reno was protested by Ashcroft for the Patriot Ax. Hatch and Feinstein have tried to censor info since the 90's. Bob Barrbarian stopping the vote in DC, where was the outrage? Now they just tack on what they want, what has failed numerous times, onto a favorable bill. Like the RAVE Ax onto the Amber Alert bill, or Hitler Education Ax. Its called Fascism, and it won't stop by itself or by those connected with it. The abuses are obvious, follow the money and count the victims. But most suckered into the fake news quips, can't see with their blinders on... The Ganjawar is just a trillion dollar product sold that we the people pay for... Toking has little to do with it... Its easier to change the wording once the legislation is established to include all of the other "vices" and "threats" Guns to Gambling to whatever they see fit. Like the Ganja laws derived from the Tommy Gun legislation requiring a Tax Stamp that was nearly impossible to obtain. Lies, catch 22's, stalling legislation, abusing power shelving medical reports. Manatory sentencing suggestions. All means to profit and perpetuate the selling of a product like any other...

Legislation Introduced to Overturn DC Initiative In Congress, hard-line drug warriors -- principally Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia -- prevented the vote in Washington DC from even being counted for more than 10 months.

...There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown,
The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.
