Togo Voters Choosing New President Newsday
Voters lined up across Togo on Sunday to choose a new president, hoping to put democracy back on track after the tiny West African nation was thrown into months of political turmoil by the death of Africa's longest-serving ruler. Faure Gnassingbe, the son of late, longtime dictator Gnassingbe Eyadema, is running against two candidates: Harry Olympio and main rival Bob Akitani, a septuagenarian opposition leader supported by legions of Togo's restless, disenfranchised youth. "We need a change in mentality here," said Christian Yenkey, a 50-year-old doctor waiting to cast his ballot at a secondary school in the capital, Lome. "I always voted before and never saw anything change. I'm hopeful that this election will be different."

New Pope Stresses Bonds at Installation ABC News
In this photo released by the Vatican's L'Osservatore Romano newspaper, Pope Benedict XVI with the woollen Pallium and Fisherman's Ring - both symbols of papal authority -, celebrates his installment Mass in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, Sunday, April 24, 2005. The Pallium is a narrow shawl of white wool embroidered with five red silk crosses, which symbolizes the Pope's role as a shepherd taking care of his flock. In a broad message of outreach to formally begin his papacy, Pope Benedict XVI stressed his church's shared bonds with Jews and other Christians and promised followers Sunday he would not ignore their voices in leading the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics.

Insurgents Continue Campaign of Violence Against Iraqis New York Times
Twin car bombs killed six Iraqi police officers and injured at least 30 at a police academy in Tikrit today. In Baghdad, 15 people were killed and at least 57 were hurt in two bomb blasts near a Shiite mosque, as insurgents continued their campaign of violence against Iraqis. A statement from Yarmook hospital reported the number of casualties from the blast, which took place in a Shiite neighborhood of the capital. Attacks on Shiite targets have raised concern over increased sectarian strife. The United States military also said it had captured four more Iraqis suspected of involvement in the downing of a civilian helicopter last week that killed six American security contractors and five others. The four Iraqis join six other Iraqi suspects seized early Saturday morning after Iraqi informers led soldiers to the suspects' truck and homes, according to military officials.

US Diplomat's account of Armenian Genocide easily forgotten Tufts Daily
by Harout Semerdjian. Some of the worst crimes in history have taken place under During the Second World War, much of the Jewish population of Europe fell victim to Nazi genocide. Several decades preceding the Holocaust, as World War I was unfolding, another genocide was taking place that effectively removed an entire population from their historical homeland of three millennia. Now, Turkey needs to acknowledge the Armenian genocide in order to gain better world standing. Leslie A. Davis, the U.S. Consul posted to the remote town of Harput, Turkey in 1915, wrote in a diplomatic dispatch dated July 24 of that year, "I do not believe there has ever been a massacre in the history of the world so general and thorough as that which is now being perpetrated in this region."

GOP Stressing Constitution in Judge Battle San Francisco Chronicle
Buffeted by poor poll numbers, Senate Republicans are stressing the Constitution rather than religion or retribution against activist judges as the reason to deny Democrats the right to block votes on President Bush's court nominees. "What I do not want to do is cross the line and say those who oppose these nominees are people who lack faith," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told "Fox News Sunday.""I don't believe that. I don't think that's appropriate." Graham spoke several hours before Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told a group of social conservatives he wants no part of retaliation against sitting judges.

Record Crowds Mark Anzac Day in Australia Voice of America
A record number of Australians have observed Anzac Day - marking the 90th anniversary of the ill-fated battle in Gallipoli (Turkey) during World War I. Many Australians believe their national identity was forged from the courage and spirit displayed by their troops during that eight-month campaign on the Aegean coastline. From Tasmania to Brisbane, tens-of-thousands of people have turned out to commemorate a day that for many marks the birth of a nation.

Togo braces for poll result after three killed Reuters AlertNet
Scared people stayed at home in Togo's capital on Monday, a day after a presidential poll ended with clashes in which three people were killed, fuelling fears of more bloodshed when results of the tarnished vote come out. Shops, banks and some schools were shut. A helicopter gunship clattered over the opposition stronghold of Be. Two pickup trucks with mounted machineguns patrolled there and the pop of tear gas canisters being fired could be heard. All sides in the election, meant to choose the West African nation's first new leader in nearly four decades, have voiced allegations of fraud and intimidation, intensifying fears that whatever the results may be they will still spark protests.
