Father, son suspected of terrorist ties arrested in California Grand Forks Herald
Criminal charges against a Lodi, Calif., father and son with suspected ties to al-Qaida are part of a years-long probe into terrorist activity that continues to expand as federal agents cast a wide net over this suburb north of Stockton, authorities said Wednesday. Hamid Hayat, 22, and his father, Umer Hayat, 47, were charged this week with lying to federal agents. Authorities said Hamid Hayat first denied any links to terrorist training camps, then admitted attending an al-Qaida-supported camp for about six months in 2003 and 2004. "Hamid further stated that he and others at the camp were being trained on how to kill Americans," FBI Special Agent Pedro Aguilar stated in an affidavit. "Hamid advised that he specifically requested to come to the United States to carry out his Jihadi mission." White House Calls Editing Climate Files Part of Usual Review New York Times
Bush administration officials said yesterday that revisions to reports on climate change made by Philip A. Cooney, a former oil-industry lobbyist now working at the White House, were part of the normal review before publishing projects that involved many agencies. At his morning briefing for reporters, the White House spokesman, Scott McClellan, defended Mr. Cooney's participation and said the reports were "scientifically sound." House Ethics Standstill Stalls DeLay Decision Washington Post
A dispute between the parties has shut down the House ethics committee for the second time this year, and lawmakers said that it could be months -- and perhaps next year -- before the panel will decide whether to examine the activities of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) or others accused of violating restrictions on lobbying and travel. DeLay has retained Richard Cullen of Richmond, a former U.S. attorney and Virginia attorney general, to represent him in dealings with the ethics committee and, if necessary, the Justice Department. Body of Missing Student Found Near Hudson River Boat Basin New York Times
A body that washed up on the shores of the Hudson River near the 79th Street Boat Basin last Thursday has been identified as that of a college student from Maryland who disappeared on April 15 after making a cellphone call in Midtown, the police said yesterday. Police investigators said the body of the student, Patrick M. Welsh, 22, of Sykesville, Md., had been in the water "for a long time," but said they could not immediately determine whether it had entered the river near where it was found or had been carried from some other point by the Hudson's strong currents. The death of Mr. Welsh, a senior at York College of Pennsylvania in York, Pa., appeared accidental, according to the police, but a final determination will not be made until the results of an autopsy as well as drug and alcohol tests are available, which the medical examiner said yesterday would not be for a week to 10 days. Campaign Finance Reform Stalls in Connecticut Capitol New York Times
Connecticut lawmakers failed Wednesday to fulfill their pledge to adopt the nation's most comprehensive campaign finance reform legislation in the aftermath of a scandal that earned their state the derisive nickname "Corrupticut." Five hours before the midnight end of the 2005 legislative session, the Senate president, Donald E. Williams Jr., a Democrat from Brooklyn, said it was too late to return to the issue and proposed instead that after a "cooling off" period, the legislature take up the subject in a special session, Mr. Williams's spokesman, Patrick Scully, said. Between midnight and dawn Wednesday, the Senate and the House each passed bills that called for full public financing of campaigns and a ban on political contributions from lobbyists and state contractors. Both plans would also have reduced the number of political action committees. But they differed on the number of such committees that would be permitted as well as on when public financing would start. Finneran's gathering storm Boston Globe
It was a spring night in 2001, and the hottest question on Beacon Hill was whether the state budget proposal about to be released by the House Ways and Means Committee would contain adequate funds for the Clean Elections Law. The law to provide public financing of campaigns had been overwhelmingly approved by voters several years earlier, but House Speaker Thomas M. Finneran had made no secret of his hostility to it, and that had spelled doom for many a measure in the State House over the years. That made Finneran's response all the more surprising when a reporter asked how much money would be in the Ways and Means budget for Clean Elections. ''I literally have no idea," Finneran said. He went on to explain that he had been so busy with other legislative matters that he had left it in the hands of Ways and Means chairman John Rogers. "You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it." -- Dr. Adrian Pierce Rogers, 1931–2005 "The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of "liberalism," they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened." He went on to say: "I no longer need to run as a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democrat Party has adopted our platform."...Norman Thomas |
