Father, son suspected of terrorist ties arrested in California Grand Forks Herald
Criminal charges against a Lodi, Calif., father and son with suspected ties to al-Qaida are part of a years-long probe into terrorist activity that continues to expand as federal agents cast a wide net over this suburb north of Stockton, authorities said Wednesday. Hamid Hayat, 22, and his father, Umer Hayat, 47, were charged this week with lying to federal agents. Authorities said Hamid Hayat first denied any links to terrorist training camps, then admitted attending an al-Qaida-supported camp for about six months in 2003 and 2004. "Hamid further stated that he and others at the camp were being trained on how to kill Americans," FBI Special Agent Pedro Aguilar stated in an affidavit. "Hamid advised that he specifically requested to come to the United States to carry out his Jihadi mission."

Body of Missing Student Found Near Hudson River Boat Basin New York Times
A body that washed up on the shores of the Hudson River near the 79th Street Boat Basin last Thursday has been identified as that of a college student from Maryland who disappeared on April 15 after making a cellphone call in Midtown, the police said yesterday. Police investigators said the body of the student, Patrick M. Welsh, 22, of Sykesville, Md., had been in the water "for a long time," but said they could not immediately determine whether it had entered the river near where it was found or had been carried from some other point by the Hudson's strong currents. The death of Mr. Welsh, a senior at York College of Pennsylvania in York, Pa., appeared accidental, according to the police, but a final determination will not be made until the results of an autopsy as well as drug and alcohol tests are available, which the medical examiner said yesterday would not be for a week to 10 days.

Connecticut lawmakers failed Wednesday to fulfill their pledge to adopt the nation's most comprehensive campaign finance reform legislation in the aftermath of a scandal that earned their state the derisive nickname "Corrupticut." Williams Jr., a Democrat from Brooklyn, said it was too late to return to the issue and proposed instead that after a "cooling off" period, the legislature take up the subject in a special session, Mr. Williams's spokesman, Patrick Scully, said. Between midnight and dawn Wednesday, the Senate and the House each passed bills that called for full public financing of campaigns and a ban on political contributions from lobbyists and state contractors. Both plans would also have reduced the number of political action committees. But they differed on the number of such committees that would be permitted as well as on when public financing would start.
