That doesn't mean we can't have great songs of exhilaration!

No -- never did...I did think Oliver Stone's use of the song at the close of Platoon was masterful...

It seems the melody is woven into the rap, but they are not the "same" song...its like MIA weaving in Straight to Hell by the Clash...or MC Hammer weaving in Rick James' Super Freak into You Can't Touch This...

Oh G, there are so many beautiful variations on a theme....Far too many for all that purity! Just enjoy it G. flowersun.gif

You know, sometimes I think the most beautiful voices in the world come from people who really can't sing so well. Just the average person pouring their heart out in voice or instrument. That's their own contribution and creation and each is like a little flower. There are a lot of hybrids, they are not all pure roses, but that doesn't make them any less sweet when they are formed as good as that person can form them. They are all beautiful in their own ways. They are the songs of humanity, good and bad, it's the heart in them that matters to me.

How did we lose Wilson? I would love to hear from someone younger about music. I don't think my kids have very good taste in music. At least the youngest has loads of humor. The older one is just soooo quiet.

I'll get back to listening here. Thanks for the great tunes guys.

He was the MASTER MAN!

The boys great-grandfather owned the saloon in Baltimore where Eubie Blake first started playing. It was a "saloon" before prohibition and a "speak-easy" after prohibition...but, it was a house of rather ill-repute as I understand it through all of those years. I have a piece of music about that saloon that Eubie Blake wrote, that no one else can play...Or at least no one I've been able to find can play it.

oh, and those people are not forgotten to me at all! clap.gif

there is a line of progression-
If it weren't for Henry Burr and Billy Murray, you most likely would not have had Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra, and Elvis, and the Beatles, and Elton
and anyone after that

Slow down, you move too fast
You've got to make the morning last
Just kickin' down the cobble stones
Looking for fun and feelin' groovy!

Hello, lamp post, whatcha knowing?
I've come to watch your flowers growing
Ain't ya got no rhymes for me?
Doot-in' doo-doo, feelin' groovy!
(La,la,la,la,la,la, feelin' groovy)

Got no deeds to do, no promises to keep
I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me
Life, I love you, all is groovy!

if you want something different it has to be hip-hop.

Johnny Cash's version of Hurt was something different, and has led to 100s of immitations(most wanting to do it with Rick Rubin).
Although its not new, as it reverts back 40 years or so.

Anyone doing old time country is new compared to the dreck on mainstream country radio

btw-something different?
How bout my mixing together some 30 years ago and making a 90 minute single medley of Harry Chapin's Sniper/& David Bowie's Space Oddity.

hmmm...Jack White of the White Stripes
He mangaged to update and do Loretta Lynn too on her cd a couple of years ago she released with him.(LUCKY JACK). whatever it is I meant by that.
Country did not touch it, but modern rock radio did. Like Hurt...Hurt was the best damn country song of the last 10 years, and they refused to play it
Yet every kid in America knows it from rock radio.
And country radio wonders why their ratings are down. Maybe try listening and expanding.

Of course, Johnny Cash was a radical liberal to some of those country stations in the era of Bush. Flucking hypocrites that they are.

Johnny Cash, another JC that was almost a God. What is about those initials?
BTW, then Barry Gibb bought his house in Nashville, and it promplty burnt to the ground. Total ruin.
I love the BGS, but you don't live in the House of Go...I mean Cash and think the spirit will allow that.

That house is no longer stayin' alive, stayin' alive.

George Strait and Patty Loveless
House of Cash
here is songwriter Leslie Satcher's own version of it (I think, its early in the morning, don't want to wake anyone up, so I do not have the sound on).

go back to the 60s for "crush" songs

Neil Diamond did about 10 of them

Crush of Beauty songs Graham...not crush songs...

Songs that take you away because of their beauty and passion and emotional drive...

Songs like Hurt for me or Stand or Fall by the Fixx or New Year's Day by U2....

Not songs about crushes my friend... smile.gif

Oh yeah, the "crush of beauty". That's what you meant. I agree.

Another Way To Die from Quantum of Solace
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hM5UJvnbbuY

Is that a title to die for or what? "Quantum of Solace". It just rolls off the tongue. I've always loved the sound of the letter Q.

The song is divine too. They managed to do it again, but updated it. That's fascinating to me. I have to get that soundtrack.

hmmm...Jack White of the White Stripes

I may have related how I met Johnny -- the one and only time I saw him...

I was waiting on line at a portajohn before Clinton's inauguration in the mall in DC...

I heard this deep voice behind me and my wife to be and friend said -- that's Johnny Cash -- and sure enough -- we offered to let him cut in front of us and he said no...he was on a float in the parade -- I assume for Tennessee and Al Gore...though he was born in Arkansas...what a perfect gentleman he was -- so humble...I miss him dearly.

One of my life's regrets is never seeing him perform live...

I really love that bands entire sound. Lyrics, music, and everything. Of course, I can't tell you why, but if someone wants to tell me why I'm all ears.

But, my favorite Cranberries song is not as popular, it's this one:

This is the Day

And this one, for special sweetness in life:

Graham,

A guy I know who used to manage a couple of bands, told me a story about Rosanne Cash. He said that she was performing someplace and John and June secretly got tickets to go see her. Well, when she came out on stage to introduce herself, not knowing her parents were there, she said "I'm Rosanne Cash, and I put the "C@nT in Country". When she found out here parents were there she just about died! Rofl2.gif

She has a sweet voice doesn't she?

Graham it's really hard for me to listen to this song so I won't. It's got a great sound and sentiment about her Dad. I know you like these things so here:

I like the 10,000 Maniacs too and Natalie Merchant...

Here is Springsteen's Song --- Because the Night by her, him, and Patti Smith...

Great song...vocally I think Smith has it - musically I like Springsteen's the best...the piano is much more crisp and the guitar who can compare...

And Explosions in the Sky is pretty neat -- they have an eerie record that came out in September 2001 --- with a plane being struck in the sky... right before 9/11...

They did the Friday Night LIghts Soundtrack and I love their haunting sounds...
