JULIE HILDEN The Supreme Court Opts to Decide Whether McCain-Feingold’s Campaign Finance Regulations Were Properly Applied to a Film Attacking Hillary Clinton, and to Ads for the Film FindLaw columnist, attorney, and author Julie Hilden discusses the Supreme Court's decision, this month, to grant review of a lower-court ruling that concerns the intersection of campaign finance law and the First Amendment. The lower-court ruling approved the Federal Election Commission's decision to apply the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law to a film called "Hillary: The Movie" and to the ads for that film. As Hilden explains, however, the ruling may either be held to violate the Supreme Court's narrow definition of what counts as an "electioneering communication," or cause the Court to narrow that definition further.
