Sins of the Parents [Mike Potemra]
One of the most memorable aspects of Steven Spielberg's award-winning movie Schindler's List was Ralph Fiennes's riveting performance as concentration-camp commander Amon Goeth: The actor conveyed the evil of a whole system through his depiction of one particular Nazi, in, simultaneously, all his shallow banality and all his deep strangeness. When the movie came out, one German viewer found it especially troubling: She was Monika Hertwig, the middle-aged daughter of Amon Goeth. She was too young to have known her infamous father—he was hanged when she still an infant—but she was haunted by the terrible realities of her father's crimes. Last night, at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Lower Manhattan, a dcoumentary was premiered that told the story of Monika Hertwig's meeting with Helen Jonas, a Holocaust survivor who had been Amon Goeth's slave. Both Hertwig and Jonas were at the premiere, and discussed the film—Hertwig's English was halting, accented, and emotional; Jonas's was cool and correct. The documentary, titled Inheritance, was deeply affecting in its portrayal of the emotional damage evil acts can do even many decades after they are committed; it will be shown on PBS on Wednesday, December 10. Strongly recommended.
