NATIONAL BOARD OF REVIEW (one of the most prestigious award groups)

Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" from Fox Searchlight was named the best picture of 2008 by the National Board of Review, while David Fincher nabbed directing honors for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."
Top acting honors went to Clint Eastwood for his turn in "Gran Torino" and Anne Hathaway for her perf in "Rachel Getting Married."

Josh Brolin ("Milk") and Penelope Cruz ("Vicki Cristina Barcelona") were tapped for suppoting nods.

The awards will be given out at the board's annual gala Jan. 14 at Gotham's Cipriani 42nd Street.

Normally 3/5 of all awards come from winners of the Board of Review/NY/LA

there are just around 50 critics in the LA group that is all.

D.C. Film Critics Pick Slumdog Millionaire
If it's the second week in December, it's time for the Washington Area Film Critics' Association to announce its picks for the best films of the year. WAFCA traditionally likes to race to get its list out before all the other critics associations, and often ends up giving top honors to movies that are less likely to take home Oscar gold (although that wasn't the case last year).

This year WAFCA named Fox Searchlight’s Slumdog Millionaire the Best Film of 2008, an honor our critic might be inclined to agree with. The film also won Best Director (Danny Boyle), Best Breakthrough Performance (Dev Patel), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Simon Beaufoy).

Rachel Getting Married also fared well with the D.C. critics, receiving awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress.

Hmmm.....I'm surprised and disappointed that "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" is not even mentioned in any of those lists.

It's the best movie I've seen in a long time. Keen and poignant character portrayals by all actors and a moving story to boot. Some independent films just don't get the PR push that others do, though. I'm sad it was overlooked.
