I think the nuke umbrella being proposed/studied would take a first strike by Israel out of the mix, but I am not sure. Mutually assured destruction is/was crazy, but the evidence is that it kept us in proxy wars and relatively safe.
I am interested in a few answers to the two questions because more than a few people here have some sort of knowledge on the region and it's politics and stuff

that is what I would hope a strong leader in Israel would think. there are benefits to US backing but....policy and treaties change. insurance would be what they have now. a threat backed by a strong back bone tested before. mutually assured destruction is in effect Israel's policy already? destroy us and we destroy you?
