could just be the internet is down up there

though there were power failures due to the ice upstate

amy
I checked and Livy hasn't been here since Dec. 11 in the evening. This is unusual...I will try to contact him to let him know we're concerned.
amy
I sent Liv a pm and an email......hopefully, we'll hear from him soon......
graham4anything
There was an extreme icestorm

it most likely is no internet service where he is due to that

(one can have electricity, but the net still can be down)

if it is the net, email/pm won't work

graham4anything
btw- NY is getting a warm day tomorrow (before it goes back down)
So if it is the cold knocking out his net, tomorrow will possibly warm things up

I am worried myself. It is not like him this long, however, the likeliest thing is that the net is down.

Damn thing about this board is when something like this happens and no #s or anything available.

More power loss possible in ice-ravaged Northeast
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081214/ap_on_re_us/ice_storm
JAFFREY, N.H. – Joined by people seeking shelter from the bitter cold, parishioners at the Jaffrey Bible Church on Sunday thanked God for a warm place to sleep and for the utility crews struggling to repair power lines snapped by New England's devastating ice storm.

"Your fellow Jaffrey residents have stepped up and made this a more bearable situation," Walt Pryor, recreation department director for the town of 5,700, told the congregation Sunday morning.

Church administrator Rick Needham noted the "terrible devastation in our lives and homes," recognizing two families whose homes were damaged by falling trees. About 150 people attended Sunday's service in Jaffrey, about 15 miles from the Massachusetts state line.

The church had been turned into a shelter, with cots and mattresses set up in offices and hallways, and televisions and 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles for children in the basement. Donated food was plentiful, including lobster casserole, pot roast, and barbecued chicken.

The ice storm knocked out electrical service to 1.4 million homes and businesses late last week. More than 600,000 customers still lacked power Sunday afternoon in upstate New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. Utilities in hardest-hit New Hampshire said power might not be totally restored to the region until Thursday or Friday.

Officials warned there could be more failures as drooping branches shed ice and snap back to their original positions, potentially taking out more power lines.

President Bush declared a state of emergency for New Hampshire and nine of Massachusetts' 14 counties, directing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide relief assistance.

Adding to the misery of downed power lines and property damage, temperatures dropped into the teens and 20s early Sunday, with single-digit readings in parts of New Hampshire and Maine. Fryeburg, Maine, hit a low of just 2 degrees above zero. Warmer weather was on the way for Monday.

The number of people at shelters in Massachusetts nearly doubled to 1,800 Saturday night as people faced another night without lights and heat. Nearly 1,300 people stayed at 56 shelters in New Hampshire.

In Jaffrey, Nancy Caisse tried to comfort her young daughter, who was sick with a stomach virus and fever, while helping elderly shelter guests with their medication.

She was trained as an emergency medical technician and said she was glad to be of use.

"This is a blessing," said Caisse, 40. "I'd rather be here helping out."

New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York and Maine declared either limited or full states of emergency Friday. Crews across the region reported the ice had destroyed utility poles, wires and other equipment, but said the extent of damage was unclear because some roads still were impassable.

About 300 national guardsmen were deployed in New Hampshire, mostly in Stoddard, 27 miles north of Jaffrey, to help with debris cleanup.

Despite the difficulties, utilities were making progress with help from utility crews from Canada and as far away as Virginia and Michigan.

"Slowly but surely we're creeping in the right direction," said Peter Judge of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.

In Vermont, Green Mountain Power President Mary Powell toured affected areas, helping distribute lunches to the line crews, and said the damage rivaled or even exceeded what happened during the 1998 ice storm that hit northern Vermont.

"Whenever you get this kind of ice accumulation, there's just nothing from a utility perspective you can do to protect your customers from devastating damage," Powell said.

Emergency management officials reported four storm-related deaths. One man in New Hampshire and a couple in New York state died of carbon monoxide poisoning from home generators. The body of a Massachusetts public works supervisor who went missing while checking on storm damage was recovered from a reservoir.

If a storm knocked out his internet warmer weather won't fix it, repairing downed lines will.

Thanks to all of you for your concern! Things at my address are A.O.K. However, I just returned from a precarious trip up north to visit my mother. Fortunately, she lives with my brother and his family, but their home is quite remote. When my brother moved to his current residence, he was wise to have a propane generator installed that automatically kicks on during power outages. Well, it sure came in handy and as I left it had been on since Thursday evening. This is crucial as my mother's health is not good and she could not tolerate a night without heat, especially last night when it dipped to 7 degrees. As I speak they still have power lines laying across the roof of their home. The power company came and checked on them while I was still there, but they won't be able to get a bucket truck up to remove them until Tuesday. On the bright side, I called to let them know I arrived home okay and learned they're back on 'regular' power. I'm still concerned a bit though for the whole area where they are. They live on the north side of a mountain and there was practically no thawing today at all whereas on the other hand I could tell a significant difference elsewhere on my way home where much, much more power had been restored. There's still a lot of trees heavy laden with ice around them and all along the country road where they live. Hopefully tomorrow will bring brighter skies and warmer temperatures as promised. I've only lived in this area for 8 1/2 years, but all the 'lifers' with whom I've spoken say this is the worst they've seen in their lifetime. My brother has been here around 20 years and said he agrees with that assessment, too.

There has been an incredible show of comradeship from power company personnel from neighboring states and Quebec helping to ease a really uncomfortable situation. My heart goes out to a disturbingly high number of people who suffered illness from carbon monoxide caused by having their generators inside rather than outside. One person has lost his life as a result but all others are on the road to recovery.

I, too, hope all is well with Livy. He is one of the foundations here and it is indeed odd for him not to be around. My guess is that upstate NY received a similar attack of the elements. Be safe, Livy -- let us know you're okay!!!

I don't know the weather very well where he is at, but hopefully he has power, heat and whatever he needs.

I was trapped in a crystal palace ....

Phones were down ...

Power was gone ....

The roads were closed ....

No internet ....

Is life possible anymore without those things?

Might I then be dead and just don't know about it, because I couldn't get through to see if my obituary had been printed?

I guess that it is possible ....

Oh, well, in that case ....

At least it seemed painless ....

Not if I was damn fool enough to try and go outside while those trees and branches were coming down ....

I'm like the fourth little pig up here ....

My house would be hard for the wolf to blow down, so in that regard, I'm like the third little pig with the brick house ....

The main difference is that unlike the third pig, when the wolf has expended his energy trying to blow down my house, I'll reach out and get him by the neck and have him cooking in a pot in a thrice ....

When you are stuck in an ice storm, and there is nowhere else to go for food ....

Some fricasseed wolf ain't bad ....

Tenderize it for a bit by boiling it like it was an old rooster .....

This is the worst ice storm we have had in a long while up here, and I have been here since 1946 ...

The last one that came close was back in 1964 ....

Huge trees were brought down by this storm, many up by the roots ....

My finest wine this time around was some water that I had put up in the refrigerator ....

As to the wood stove ....

Life would be much less comfortable without it, that is a fact ....

This for me was like going back to my childhood in the 1950's ....

Sit in the dark in the midst of the storm, and think your thoughts ...

Muse on this and that ...

Keep fear from intruding too far, anyway ...

You don't really have much choice, if you don't wish to flip out or go crazy, but to sit and wait it through .....

Whatever number of days that is going to be, is what it will be ....

You can tell by the sounds of trees dying out there in a bad ice storm that it is going to be more than five minutes before the power comes back on, if ever ....

And if you only have four minutes worth of patience, oh, well ...

Can we even begin to assign mundane terms like good or bad to what might be once in a lifetime experiences, tomhye?

All I can say is that at certain times, when the light came through at a certain angle, it created what the dictionary might call EFFULGENCE - radiant splendor ...

I won't call that the ultimate pinnacle of all of my life's experiences, but it sure does rank as a contender ...

And not to wax religious in here, but it is hard not to think or believe in some greater power than us when you are in the midst of that splendor and absolute beauty of that crystalline world that exists but for a few beats of the earth's heart ...

The bittersweet concomitant was all the damage in the physical plane that accompanied that happening ...
