SAUDIS HOLD ABU-ALI INCOMMUNICADO
MAS Freedom Foundation Plans Direct Action Campaign at the Saudi Embassy, U.S. Congress, and State Department
Ahmed Abu-Ali, a U.S. citizen who has been illegally imprisoned abroad for 551 days, yet not charged with a crime, has not been able to contact his family since November 30, 2004, at which time his tragic story was aired on CNN.
Abu-Ali’s family indicated that he used to contact them regularly every other Saturday from the Saudi prison. Given the allegations of torture, they expressed grave concerns about his well-being.
“This injustice has gone on for far too long,” says Muslim American Society (MAS) Freedom Foundation’s Executive Director Mahdi Bray. “We have been in touch with national human and civil rights leaders and prominent Americans in the religious and civic community. They have expressed their support for a direct action campaign at the Saudi Embassy and the Justice Department.
“I, and others, are prepared to get arrested in front of the Saudi Embassy - that’s the least we can do”, says Bray.
Additionally, MAS Freedom Foundation plans to walk the halls of congress and talk with each member of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus.
Ahmed Abu-Ali is an American student who traveled to Saudi Arabia in August 2002 to pursue a degree in Islamic Sciences. In June 2003, he was approached by Saudi Security officials while taking his final exams and was subsequently arrested and detained. Today marks the 551th day of his unlawful detention.
