Senate confirms Clinton

The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of State.

The former first lady becomes the highest-profile member of President Obama’s Cabinet. The two had battled for the Democratic nomination throughout the first half of the year but have since maintained that there is no bad blood remaining from the protracted primary.

While the outcome of Clinton’s confirmation process was never in doubt, concerns over whether contributions to her husband’s charitable foundation could result in conflicts of interests proved to be a road bump for the New York senator.

Former President Bill Clinton has raised more than $500 million for his foundation, with some big chunks of that money coming from foreign governments that Hillary Clinton now has to deal with as secretary of State.

It was those concerns that prevented Clinton from being confirmed on Tuesday along with several other members of the Cabinet. While Republicans have uniformly said that Clinton is more than qualified for the position, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) opposed a unanimous consent request Tuesday to highlight the conflict of interest concerns.

Both Clintons and the Obama administration have hammered out a memorandum of understanding about the foundation’s transparency. While the former first lady indicated that she saw no need to amend that deal, Republicans have urged her to take additional steps to guard the United States against conflict of interest allegations.

Sen. Cornyn had his 15 minutes of fame trying pointlessly to stop the inevitable for what I saw to be no reason at all. I'm glad it's over and things can now move forward.

Time to get down to business!! yes2.gif
