I had my pregnant Great Pyrenees bitch X-rayed today, and the vet says she is carrying at least 10 pups (maybe 12). That's several more than I was expecting, so I guess I will be busy if all goes well. They're due in 7-10 days.

Congratulations, D! Is this the bitch you showed at the Westminster last year? Or a younger lady?
I was informed by Mr. Peg yesterday that, for all time, we must take into consideration that he will always have a Great Pyr in his life, for the rest of his life, so full-time island living will probably not be for us!
Will you make deliveries to Alabama?

Huge congratulations out to you, Momma and Poppa Pyr.
The day I have a yard big enough for another Great Pyr will be
a happy day indeed. Although it has been almost seven years
since I gave up my Great Pyr, not a week goes by that I wonder
how my Chloe is doing.

That was the papa Pyr that I showed at Westminster. If you want one, Peg, we could make arrangements

I had been expecting a litter of like 6 or so, so it looks like I will have plenty.

I'll get some pix up later today. I'm bushed. We have 9 pups now, been in labor for 14 hours and still not done yet. Pup 1 was born at 2:10 p.m.; pup 9 at 4 a.m. I didn't realize it took SOOOOOO long. One more TK, presumably.
Have a cam, but it's not in the same room as pups, so I guess stills will have to do. So far, I have 5 boys, 4 girls; 5 white, 4 marked.

She finally finished up about 7:15, when she had two pups at once, one of which was stillborn.
Just got back from the vet. Did an X-ray, and he said that that's all and gave her an oxy shot.
So the final count was 11 pups, 10 of which survived. I had the sex wrong on the 4 a.m. pup, so the gender breakdown is 6 girls (3 white, 3 marked), 4 boys (2 white, 2 marked).
Will have pix later today, after I get a nap

She is a very good mom. Very attentive and takes her job seriously.
All 10 pups appear to be healthy, and everybody seems to be stabilized now, even the smallest pups. So mom just needs to get in her full milk supply so the pups can start growing.

I know that they are all big boys and girls, now, D. Do you have any new pics? I assume that they are all distributed. Did you keep any of them?
dggfwtx
Aug 28 2009, 01:28 PM
Thanks for asking, Peg. They're 20 weeks old now. I have three pups left -- 2 boys and a girl. I'm keeping 1 boy and the girl. One boy is still needing a permanent home. The two I'm keeping are the white boy and marked girl playing together in the first pic.

BTW, their names are Freddie and Rosie -- BigRig Spookin' The Horses and BigRig Wilder Than Her. The marked boy is just "Jack" for now.

They get big so fast! I never got to see Shiloh as a pup, but I've seen pictures of her turning her little belly up to Harley, our dobie-rott cross (now sadly deceased). That pecking order didn't last for very long.
Hope that Jack gets a good and loving home soon.

Aug 28 2009, 04:16 PM
Yes, they do get big in a hurry. The two boys are up close to 50 pounds! Rosie appears to have a very dominant personality. The adult Pyrs all hate her. I expect that she will eventually be No. 1 dog here.

Time flies, and the first of the pups is already in the show ring. Rosie has done only four shows and already has three points toward her championship. This pic shows her taking Best of Opposite Sex and Best of Winners for two points in Austin. I had back surgery a couple of months ago, so I am delaying Freddie's debut until I determine if I will be able to show him.

Rosie is so fluffy that she almost looks like a big samoyed!
Sorry about your back. Hope you recover quickly and can show Freddie in all his glory!

Nov 5 2009, 02:01 PM
Thanks, Peg. Pups are 7 months now, and Rosie still has that fluffy puppy coat.
Whether I'll be able to show again is an open question, as i still have problems with numbness in my right foot. They say nerve issues can take a long time, so we'll see. Freddie can't be shown right now anyway, as he has a bit of pano and is limping some.
Rosie, though, could be a star if she gets big enough. She has fantastic movement and personality.

Yes, he was last to go, but very fortunate. He found a home with a good family in Houston.
