Charles Gibson to retire; Sawyer to replace

NEW YORK (WABC) -- ABC News has announced Charles Gibson will retire as anchor of ABC News World News Tonight.
ABC News President David Westin announced Good Morning America anchor Diane Sawyer will replace Gibson in the anchor chair. Gibson is expected to retire in January.

Gibson was named to the anchor chair in 2006.

Before being named anchor of "World News," Gibson was co-anchor of "Good Morning America."
Gibson has over 40 years experience in jounalism, and has been with ABC News for 33 years.

How interesting that for the past 40 odd years, so-called "News Anchors" have come not from journalism but from ENTERTAINMENT.

Tom Brokaw, that paragon of Cronkiteness, worked the Today Show with Jane Pauley. He was good at it, BTW.

Gibson was also a morning man.

Sawyer did magazine pieces with Charles Kuralt on Sunday Morning. Also quite good, IMHO.

Last "real" newsman was Peter Jennings.
