Solving America's Growing Problem Of Finding Eligible Military Recruits
U.S. Navy recruits stand at attention during training at The Great Lakes Recruit Training Command in North Chicago, Illinois. More than 40,000 recruits complete eight weeks of training at the facility every year. The base, which opened in 1911, was the first and is the only remaining U.S. Navy boot camp. The Pre-K "Cure" -- The Examiner

Military recruiting has always been tough duty. Even in the middle of a recession, with near-double-digit unemployment, it's often difficult to find young Americans who are ready for service in the armed forces.

And it's not the on-going wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that makes recruiting so difficult. Despite the hazards of combat deployments--and other hardships--the various military branches have been successful in meeting their enlistment quotas since 9-11. So, the recruiting challenge isn't a shortage of willing volunteers.

Military Service is looking better all the time. First, it's a guaranteed job, often with perks like citizenship or green cards for your family. Second, the casualty rate is much lower than our past wars. Third, when you leave, you can join Blackwater at triple the pay.

Back home there is unemployment.

Just like the Roman Legions, patrolling the farthest outposts of the empire.

Who is this person saying that it is hard to find recruits? Both my sons have joined the Navy. The only option available to them is the delayed entry program. It doesn't matter what job they want, all of them are booked into next year. My oldest wants to be a chef (Yeah, that's pretty dumb if you ask me, but it's a job that the Navy always had a hard time finding recruits for) and he doesn't have a date to ship out to Basic Training until June 2010! There is nothing available until then because everyone is trying to join the Navy to escape the recession.

My nephew joined the Army, and he isn't able to go to Basic Training until October, and he signed up in June. So, I don't know who thinks that it is hard to find personnel, because it's just not true.

What is the rejection rate? Perhaps that is what makesa the job hard...

How could I find that out, do you know?

I know that they used to (under Bush) accept those with scores on the ASVAB at 35, but now you have to have a score above 50.

It's probably not hard to find people to join the Navy because the current wars are not naval.
