Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

September 11, 2009

Is it Really Just About Race?
First Read: "At what point do what a bunch of folks in D.C. believe privately become more public -- that
there is a dramatic divide between how people in the South view Obama versus the rest of the country?
Sure, the South has always been more conservative and has been increasingly more Republican, so it shouldn't be a surprise this region is less open to a Democratic president's ideas; it's no different than folks in New York City and San Francisco not being open to a Republican president's proposals. But is it really the 'D' next to Obama's name that has folks upset in the South? Yes, there was a 'coastal' divide when it came to George W. Bush, and the election results of 2004, 2006, and 2008 proved that. But is it ALL just ideological? It's truly subjective... As defiant as some on the right are about the fact that this has nothing to do with race, there's an equal group of folks who believe it's ONLY grounded in race. Bottom line: Whether it's fair or not, there is a perception growing that race is driving some elements of the opposition to Obama. It probably means this tumult will only grow for the time being."

I've been conducting my own listening tour up here, graham, and I find a lot of support for that Congressman Wilson, to be truthful ...

It will be interesting to see how his national popularity does now ....

People don't think Obama is truthful, graham ....

Nor do they think that he is trustworthy ...

And if I was to be honest with you, graham, I would have to count myself as one of them ....

Whether or not he is an outright liar, I don't know ....

But I think the dude is given overmuch to flights of fancy ....

And to try and convince us of the legitimacy of his flights of fancy, he prevaricates ....

Like a snake oil salesman ....

Wilson had NO real challanger the day before

A new poll shows HE IS IN A DEAD HEAT

THE F'N SLIMEBALL BAG OF SHEET IS GOING DOWN BIG TIME

HOPE THEY PAID HIM WELL, BECAUSE HE IS A LOSER AND

HE IS WORSE 100 TIMES THAN JANE FONDA EVER WAS.

WILSON IS A TRAITOR...ON THE DAY BEFORE 9/11, WHEN THE PRESIDENT OF ALL AMERICA SPEAKS, THIS DISRESPECTFUL ASSSSSHOLE
IS A BONAFIDE TRAITOR WHO SHOULD BE ERADICATED FROM THE HOUSE FOREVER

THIS WILSON REPBUICAN RACIST FAT BUFOOON is a freakin' bag of sheet

AND THAT HE IS A KKK LOVER, AS PROVEN BY THE ORGANIZATIONS HE JOINS, AND BELIEVES THE SOUTH WON THE WAR(pitiful as that seems, eh,
livyjr, the rejects don't realize they lost the war), still flying that traitor flag he does.

Wilson the traitor forever more.

And I truly thank God that guns are allowed, because GOD spoke in Michigan just yesterday, Guns are indeed great, my mind is changed on the gun
issue. Guns are truly great, after GOD spoke yesterday in Michigan.

Or this board would not exist and be so robust as it is ...

what is it about the Carolina's?
must have polluted water down there

(and its not just republicans, as John Edwards and his wife, two of the worst America has to offer, are from there.
Can you imagine they thought they could be president and first lady...)

yes remember how the republicans said the air was safe at the WTC after 9-11
and how over 3000 workers(more than died in the buildings) have since become ill, either died or will die?
let alone the school kiddies that will die who lived in the area and went back to school when the REPUBLICANS told them the air was clean

Have you forgotten?
TheRestofUs
I noticed Wilson kept his finger far away from Obama when he pointed at him (surrounded by the other intelligentsia of the Republican Party). I also heard that "brave southern gentleman" (or what passes for one these days) ran out of the Chamber when the speech ended. Did he suddenly remember another appointment?

I think all utterances from Republicans need to be taken with huge crystals of salt and we should consider the source. But a certain angry segment of the population are so sorely in need of "heroes," they'll have them, even if they have to make them up out of whole.... (censored)

See... I am practicing "restraint" these days.
TheRestofUs
I was watching Olbermann's show last night (or was it Maddow's?). And I think there was a recounting of history from the time of Calhoun. It seems Senators and Congressmen from South Carolina (they were the first to fire on Ft Sumter weren't they?) have long been thugs and bullies and attacked others physically. They also believe in "Nullification" by a disingenuous reading of the Tenth Amendment which they see as meaning they can do whatever they want.

They are anti-American IMO. IMO they do not believe in America for everyone. IMO they believe in their (white) version of it and (IMO)...

I think they and whichever other States have Republican Governors of like mind should be allowed to opt out of the Public Option by fiat from their Governor.

That would be fine with me.
rla
The most noteworthy thing about all of this is how eager everyone seems to have something to get mad about...
My guess is that a great cloud of Depression has decended upon us and people are having trouble keeping their Stimulation/Activation curve up...

Who? Moi? I think there is a "sub rosa" effect though. I find myself having to bite my tongue more often these days (unfortunately it doesn't always work).

Millions of angry minds full of hatred has its effect on all but the most invincible. It is like a weather pattern with its own "humidity". For people like me (prone to anger) it is particularly hard. Still at the risk of seeming to justify myself I think I am angry (mostly) at the "right" things.

Unfortunately, I know too, that such excuses are legion.

My wife has always had this response to Obama...She is generally a very accepting person but she has always
expressed a lack of trust in everything he says...She was a strong Hillary supporter and she is a strong advocate
for women's rights so I always discounted some of her response because I knew she thought more attention
should be given sexual discrimination relative to racial discrimination...

So we will just have to wait and see how it all plays out...

I wonder, rla, if like me she listens to him on the radio ...

Or if she can actually see him when he speaks, as on TV ...

Outside of what is in print, everything I know about Obama comes from listening to his voice coming at me over the radio ....

I am totally lacking in visual distraction when I am listening to it ....

As you know, the lack of visual distraction frees up a whole lot of brain power ....

So I am hearing stress levels in his voice along with the flow of words .....

yup.
anyone that don't like Obama is racist
It has been proven.
Beyond a shadow of a doubt

because noone ever gave any reason, from the primaries on down otherwise that was in the least believable.

You are either for Obama or you are for Cheney/Jeb Bush. Because, get real, there is NO ONE else.

The revolution was Nov.08. There ain't gonna be another one EVER that is any better.
Why do you think even the moderate dems HATE Obama so much? Because they know GOOD won, and THEY IS NOT GOOD.

Anyone who is in power who is against Obama is BAD/horrible/terrible AND CORRUPT
Anyone who is not in power who is against Obama is either racist or just so naive they just do not see it

Just because one didn't like the line in the sand the Bush family drew

DOES NOT MAKE SOMEONE ELSE DRAWING A LINE IN THE SAND BAD

That is the fallacy of the strawman people say that it sounds like Bush.
Those people obviously are either racist, or totally naive
(or their life or livelihood depends on keeping fighting going

and progressives doing that are no better than the Generals who want war to continue for their livelihood to continue

Who are the liberals going to get to take these eyes, graham, and these teeth for them?

Are they going to hire on paid mercenaries from Blackwater, now Xe, to do their killing for them?

I can see them out there biting off fingers, of course ....

But it is hard to bite out somebody's eye, I would think ....

He was still going by Jesus the last time I talked to him, graham ....

And he is still as much against the use of violence as he always was ....

And he didn't have a clue as to who this Harlan Drake was ....

Although he did admit that there were some real porkers in the crowd that ran him down at that Walmart's ....

"SOME OF THOSE DUDES MUST HAVE PUSHED THREE OR FOUR HUNDRED POUNDS APIECE" is what I recall him saying about that horrible experience ....

The last vestage of a rogue or a fool is the race card...and the progressive silence relative to it...is deafening.

In The South this is called a crock of sh*t. Find another excuse...and have a nice day...it's a beautiful morning down here.

And speaking about gratuitous violence, graham what on earth was up with Serena Williams at the U.S. Open?

She told a line judge "I'm going to shove this ball down your f------ throat".

Now how sporting is that, graham?

What is going on with the world, anyway?

Even dear sweet gentle graham now wants to go out and buy a .50 Caliber Smith & Wesson fully automatic pistola with the 500 round belt-feed and laser sight that lets you get off ten rounds to the other guy's one ....

Lots of angry white people in the mall on Saturday. Didn't look like America to me. What were they protesting? Taxes? They were protesting Obama's tax cuts for them? Were they protesting the war in Afghanistan? Didn't see no signs about that. Protesting bad treatment of Veterans? Didn't see nothing about that.

Protesting lower healtcare premiums? I did see some signs about that. Seemed a little odd though don't you think?

Like I said there were a lot of white people in the mall on Saturday and they were angry about something....

So who are the real rogues and fools? And who is playing the race card?

Massive crowd marches against Obama's agenda
Tens of thousands of angry conservatives converge on Washington to denounce
the president's healthcare proposals and more, echoing Rep. Joe Wilson's accusations.

Reporting from Washington - Tens of thousands of protesters marched on the U.S. Capitol on Saturday, airing a wide range of grievances
rooted in a shared sentiment: seething anger at President Obama and his far-reaching agenda.

Led by a fife and drum corps in period costumes, the demonstrators filled Pennsylvania Avenue and swarmed the Capitol grounds with a
sea of bobbing placards and hand-lettered signs that spelled out a catalog of dissent.

There were antiabortion protesters and term-limit advocates. Critics of financial bailouts and the federal investigation into
CIA interrogation
techniques. Marchers who were worried about rekindling inflation and upset about the soaring national debt.
Pickets opposed to Obama's healthcare reform plan and challenging the legitimacy of his election.

"Is This Russia?" one sign said. "Traitors Terrorists Run Our Government," read another. "Don't blame me. I voted for The 'American,' " a third stated.

The protest -- touted by organizers as the largest-ever outpouring of political conservatives -- was organized by a loose-knit coalition of anti-tax,
small-government proponents, and widely promoted by sympathetic voices in the blogosphere and on TV and talk radio. Park police declined to provide an official crowd estimate.

The rally was embraced, after some hesitation, by congressional Republicans, some of whom were leery of associating with the more incendiary elements of Obama's opposition.

"The coming weeks and months may well set the course for this nation for a generation," said Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, the No. 3 GOP House leader,
voicing the apocalyptic tone that rang through much of the day's rhetoric. "How we as conservatives respond to these challenges could determine whether
America retains her place in the world as a beacon of freedom, or whether we slip into the abyss that has swallowed much of Europe in an avalanche of socialism."

If there was a unifying theme, it was the notion that the federal government, starting with the financial bailout last fall and continuing with Obama's vast economic
stimulus plan, has grown too big, too costly and too intrusive.

"I have five children, and I worry about their future and the country we're going to leave them," said Michele Meyer, 59, of nearby Vienna, Va., who marched
with a small blue-and-white sign that read: "Bury ObamaCare with Kennedy" -- a reference to the late Massachusetts senator and longtime champion of universal healthcare.

The president faced a much friendlier crowd when he traveled to Minneapolis on Saturday. An enthusiastic rally of 15,000 cheered and chanted, "Yes we can!"
as Obama called for congressional passage of his healthcare overhaul. In addition, the president used his weekend radio address to discuss the topic, and plans
to press his case in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" tonight.

The healthcare overhaul, a centerpiece of Obama's agenda and one of the most contentious issues facing Congress, was a central focus of the rambunctious crowd.
From a small stage near the Capitol steps, one speaker after another condemned the president's plan as a liberal (some said socialist, others collectivist) power grab
that would drive up costs, undermine care, and eventually bankrupt the country.

"We must stop this government takeover of healthcare and we must force the president and Congress to fix what's broken instead of replacing what's right," said
Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina. "Friends, this is a crucial battle for the heart and soul of America -- for freedom itself."

Less than eight months ago, Obama stood at the Capitol to take the oath of office. He immediately embarked on the most expansive set of presidential initiatives
since the New Deal
, responding to the worst economic meltdown since the Depression.

The backlash, however, has been fierce. It manifested itself here on a cool, gray Saturday, in both the mass of demonstrators stretching far down the Washington Mall
and the reaction -- a lusty chorus of boos -- at the mere mention of Obama's name.

Pointing toward the Capitol, its dome a majestic backdrop, former Republican House Leader Dick Armey alluded to the oath that Obama took Jan. 20.
"He pledged a commitment of fidelity to the United States Constitution," Armey said.

"He lied!" the crowd chanted back. "He lied! He lied!"

Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina breached congressional protocol when he hollered, "You lie!" Wednesday night during Obama's speech to a joint session
of Congress, drawing condemnation from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

However, Wilson was a hero to many in Saturday's crowd. People wore "Joe Wilson for president" stickers and waved signs saying, "Joe Wilson was right" and "We need more Joe Wilsons."

"I believe he lies about everything," Dottie Dupree, 38, an off-duty law officer from Maryland, said of Obama.

"I came out today because he needs to hear from people like us, exercising our 1st Amendment rights."

Thanks. You answered my question Bro.

Now I know why they were there and why they were so angry.

So the Right's got a new Messiah? The brave southern gentleman from South Carolina who ran out of the Chamber after he shouted at Obama?

If I was one of those people in the crowd and Wilson was our new hero now? Guess I'd be pretty mad too....

Sounds like you might be, TROU ....

But it is hard to say, since you don't give us any details about what mall you are talking about ....

If it is out there where you are, maybe they are upset at breathing all that foul air all the time ....

And so ....
