Merkel's Center-Right Alliance to Win German Vote
By MARCUS WALKER
BERLIN -- A center-right alliance led by German Chancellor Angela Merkel was on course for a narrow victory
Germany's national elections on Sunday, potentially putting it in a position to relaunch Germany's stalled
economic overhaul at a time of growing demands for Europe's biggest economy to do more for global growth.
Ms. Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union and its pro-business ally, the Free Democratic Party,
were set to win a majority in Germany's lower house of parliament, according to projections based on exit polls and early vote counts.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel of the CDU waved during the election evening at the CDU headquarters in Berlin on Sunday.
The CDU, its Bavarian conservative sister-party, and the FDP won 48.3% of the national vote on Sunday, according to projections
by state broadcaster ARD.
The parties are expected to form a new national government quickly, replacing the fractious bipartisan coalition between Ms. Merkel's
CDU and the left-leaning Social Democrats that has ruled Germany since 2005.
