Asian Nations Look To 'Lead World' -- AFP

HUA HIN, Thailand — Asian leaders discussed plans at a major summit Saturday to "lead the world" by forming an EU-style community, while urging action from pariah states North Korea and Myanmar.

The premiers of regional giants China and India also sought to foster unity on the sidelines of the regional summit in Thailand after months of trading barbs over long-standing territorial issues.

Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama's proposal for an East Asian community that could take a leading role in global efforts to recover from the economic crisis took centre stage on Saturday.

What was perceived as a remote idea 10 years ago is rapidly becoming a reality today .... an Asian economic union among the major Asian economic powers and smaller states. The ultimate goal from this union will probably be the following .... and taking a few decades to get there .... the development of a NATO type of military alliance followed by some form of political union .... a process that we can say is only happening now.

Is Asia rising .... looking at it from the outside, I will have to say yes.

We are in a new world order in that the boundaries of the current world order are much more permeable than the boundaries that existed 20 years ago or 40 years ago or 60 years ago...The rate
of cultural change is speeding up as the world turns through time and space...individual human organisms are
developing in interaction with the culture in which they are embedded, just as they have always done so...The
frequency and intensity of this interaction is increasing...
