Got this e-mail this morning from a close friend from whom I hadn't heard in awhile:

I'm writing this with tears in my eyes,I came down here to
London,England for a short vacation to visit a resort.I was mugged at
gun point last night at the park of the hotel where i lodged. All
cash, credit cards and cell were stolen from me.I've been to the US
embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all,I
already have my flights tickets and i'm having problems settling the
hotel bills. The hotel manager won't let me leave until i settle the
hotel bills($1,690).Please reply and let me know if you can loan me
the cash.. i promise to pay back as soon as i get back home.

Thanks

It looked totally legit, coming from her e-mail addy with her genuine office info at the bottom of the e-mail. My knee-jerk reaction was to respond - "Of course! Just tell me where to send it!" Pretty stupid, I know. Fortunately, I had a flash of self-preservation that warned me to check it out first. I called her at her office, and she eventually picked up the phone, and said, with resignation, "no, it wasn't from me, my Facebook account got hacked and all my e-mail addressed were accessed." She said that her banker, who was on her list of friends, actually responded to the e-mail!

So beware of e-mails which prey on your finer instincts, even when they seem legit!

why would someone believe this???

all anyone would have to do is contact their credit card company to get new c/c's which are shipped worldwide next day or even same day if necessary
and this could be settled

noone in their right mind would have any need for cash nor would they believe this is true as

this is totally unbelievable and that anyone would fall for it???

the hotel bill would be paid for by c/c BEFORE arrival, especially in a foreign country.

and at a resort??? You can't register for a good hotel without a credit card down that is checked and re-checked for the entire amount before during and after checkout.

You actually believed this???

What can I say? We can't all be as non-gullible as you. I can but aspire -----

think about it

if someone was having a problem, they would call (not necessarily from a cell phone)
calls from overseas now are really cheap

because the other person overseas wouldn't have any idea if an email would even arrive, let alone be seen in the proper time frame
