Update at 3:49 p.m. ET: The Pentagon has confirmed seven dead and 20 wounded.

Update at 3:54 p.m. ET: The shooting occurred at about 1:30 p.m. CT (2:30 p.m. ET) at the family readiness area, Army spokesman Gary Tallman tells USA TODAY's Tom Vanden Brook. The base has been closed, he said.

A spokeswoman for the City of Killeen, where the base is located, tells USA TODAY's Donna Leinwand the Army is "asking for EMTs because it's a mass casualty event."

"They are having issues getting on and off post because they've locked it down," said spokeswoman Hilary Shine. "Right now there are a lot of questions and confusion."

Fort Hood is set up like its own city with its own fire, police and medical facility, Shine says. They have not asked for Killeen Police to assist, but the police are on call if needed, she said.

Update at 4:01 p.m. ET: USA TODAY's David Jackson has this from the White House:

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said he has told President Obama about the shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, and that the staff is trying to get details.

"I told him what we knew," Gibbs said, adding that is awaiting an update himself.

The president Obama did not mention the incident during remarks after meeting with President Ian Khama of Botswana. (Nor was he asked; some of the journalists had not heard about the shootings.)

Obama declined a reporter's invitation to go beyond his earlier remarks about the pending House vote on health care.

"We're here to talk about Botswana," Obama said.

The president has at least one more public event today, 4:50 p.m. remarks to close the White House Tribal Nations Conference.

Officials: 11 killed, plus gunman, in Fort Hood shootings
November 5, 2009 5:18 p.m. EST

(CNN) -- Eleven people plus a gunman were killed and 31 were wounded after the gunman opened fire at Fort Hood in Texas on Thursday, a Fort Hood spokesman said.

The gunman was a soldier, and two other soldiers have been detained as suspects, said the spokesman, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone.

Cone said more than one shooter may have been involved.

President Obama called the shootings "tragic" and "a horrific outburst of violence." He expressed his condolences for the shooting victims.

"These are men and women who have made the selfless and courageous decision to risk, and at times give, their lives to protect the rest of us on a daily basis," Obama said. "It's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas. It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil."

Officials at Fort Hood, which is the Army's largest U.S. post, were asking people there to stay away from windows, CNN affiliate KXXV said. The incident took place at the sports dome, now known as the soldier readiness area, the station reported.

A congressional aide said he was on the post to attend a graduation service when he saw a soldier with blood on his uniform near the building where the service was being held, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

Greg Schannep, an aide to U.S. Rep. John Carter, said the soldier ran past him and said a man was shooting. He said the soldier appeared to be injured in a shoulder, the American-Statesman reported.

FBI agents are headed to the scene to assist, said Erik Vasys, spokesman for the FBI office in San Antonio. He had no other details.

On the Fort Hood Web site, the word "closed" is posted with the statement, "Effective immediately, Fort Hood is closed. Organizations/units are instructed to execute a 100 percent accountability of all personnel."

Fort Hood, with about 40,000 troops, is home to the Army's 1st Cavalry Division and elements of the 4th Infantry Division, as well as the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and the 13th Corps Support Command. It is located near Killeen, Texas.

At least 25,000 people are at Fort Hood on any given day, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon said.

Fort Hood is home to the Warrior Combat Stress Reset Program, which is designed to help soldiers overcome combat stress issues.

In June, Fort Hood's commander, Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch, told CNN that he was trying to ease the kind of stresses soldiers face. He has pushed for soldiers working a day schedule to return home for dinner by 6 p.m., and required his personal authorization for anyone working weekends. At the time, two soldiers stationed there had committed suicide in 2009 -- a rate well below those of other posts.

I cringed as well when I saw the Major's name. It doesn't matter if the reason this occurred was from him suffering from PTSS himself, the fallout from this will not be good. Assumptions, bitterness and lack of trust will be generalized to the entire Muslim population.

Can you give that up? Bush and Cheney are both over a thoursand miles away from here, and Obama is hardly likely to be looking to hit Iran.

Most Muslims, say 99.9999%, you see on the street are no more dangerous than you or me. But that does not mean there aren't a few baddies among them. Just like there are baddies among conservative, Christian White people.

On Friday, Mr. and I visited Fort Stewart outside of Savannah, where Mr. was stationed for three years in the '70's. As we approached the gate, we were randomly selected for a vehicle search. They clearly weren't looking for drugs, as Mr. had a large pack of loose tobacco for his pipe in plain sight in the front seat, in which the men showed zero interest. What they did was look all under the vehicle, where bigger stuff might have been hidden. Now I have a clearer understanding why they do that sort of thing.

Can't imagine how much more tightly the bases will be secured now, even though the danger in this case was from within.

"Obama says don't jump to conclusions on shooting"

By BEN FELLER, Associated Press Writer

6 NOVEMBER 2009

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Friday the entire nation is grieving for those slain at Fort Hood, and he urged people not to jump to conclusions while law enforcement officers investigate the shootings.

Obama met Friday morning with FBI Director Robert Mueller and other federal leaders to get an update on what they've learned.

Thirteen people were killed and 30 others injured in the shooting rampage at the Texas Army post on Thursday.

The suspected shooter is an Army psychiatrist; his motive remains unclear.

"We don't know all the answers yet."

"And I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts," Obama said in a Rose Garden statement otherwise devoted to the economy.

"What we do know is that there are families, friends and an entire nation grieving right now for the valiant men and women who came under attack yesterday," the president said.

His aides, meanwhile, worked to make way for Obama to attend a still unscheduled memorial service for those slain at the nation's largest military post.

The White House's top spokesman said Obama would attend that service and emphasized it would take place at the family's convenience, and that it will not be dictated by the president's schedule.

"When a service is scheduled, the president will attend," Robert Gibbs told reporters during his daily briefing.

Yet Obama is also scheduled to leave on a 10-day trip to Asia on Wednesday.

Gibbs would not rule out delaying the trip so Obama could attend the service before setting off on the major international trip of the year.

Gibbs said the president's schedule remains in flux.

Obama ordered the flags at the White House and other federal buildings to be at half-staff until Veterans Day.

He called it a modest tribute to those who were slain and to those who put their lives on the line in the armed services each day.

"We stand in awe of their sacrifice, and we pray for the safety of those who fight, and for the families of those who have fallen," he said.

The president promised that that his administration would update the nation as it learns more about what happened, and why, at Fort Hood.

The suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was shot and remains hospitalized.

"Army post shooting rampage leaves 13 dead, 30 hurt"

By APRIL CASTRO and DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writers

6 NOVEMBER 2009

FORT HOOD, Texas – Military officials were starting Friday to piece together what may have pushed an Army psychiatrist trained to help soldiers in distress to turn on his comrades in a shooting rampage that killed 13 people and wounded 30 in Texas.

The suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was on a ventilator and unconscious in a hospital after being shot four times during the shootings at the Army's sprawling Fort Hood, post officials said.

In the early chaos after the shootings, authorities believed they had killed him, only to discover later that he had survived.

In Washington, a senior U.S. official said authorities at Fort Hood initially thought one of the victims who had been shot and killed was the shooter.

The mistake resulted in a delay of several hours in identifying Hasan as the alleged assailant.

Authorities have not ruled out that Hasan was acting on behalf of some unidentified radical group, the official said.

He would not say whether any evidence had come to light to support that theory.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss matters that were under investigation.

Officials are not ruling out the possibility that some of the casualties may have been victims of "friendly fire," that in the mayhem and confusion at the shooting scene some of the responding military officials may have shot some of the victims.

The gunfire broke out around 1:30 p.m. at the Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening.

Nearby, some soldiers were readying to head into a graduation ceremony for troops and families who had recently earned degrees.

Pastor Greg Schannep had just parked his car along the side of the theater and was about to head into the ceremony when a man in uniform approached him.

"Sir, they are opening fire over there!" the man told him.

At first, he thought it was a training exercise — then heard three volleys and saw people running.

As the man who warned him about the shots ran away, he could see the man's back was bloodied from a wound.

Schannep said police and medical and other emergency personnel were on the scene in an instant, telling people to get inside the theater.

The post went into lockdown while a search began for a suspect and emergency workers began trying to treat the wounded.

Some soldiers rushed to treat their injured colleagues by ripping their uniforms into makeshift bandages to treat their wounds.

Fort Hood Lt. Gen. Bob Cone praised the soldiers for their quick reaction.

"God bless these soldiers," Cone said.

"As horrible as this was it could have been worse."

Video from the scene showed police patrolling the area with handguns and rifles, ducking behind buildings for cover.

Sirens could be heard wailing while a woman's voice on a public-address system urged people to take cover.

Schools on the base went into lockdown, and family members trying to find out what was happening inside found cell phone lines jammed or busy.

"I was confused and just shocked," said Spc. Jerry Richard, 27, who works at the center but was not on duty during the shooting.

"Overseas you are ready for it."

"But here you can't even defend yourself."

The wounded were dispersed among hospitals in central Texas, Cone said.

Their identities and the identities of the dead were not immediately released.

The bodies of the victims would be taken to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware for autopsies and forensic tests, said a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss matters that were under investigation.

There will also be a ceremony at the air base to honor the dead.

Jamie and Scotty Casteel stood outside the emergency room at the hospital in Temple waiting for news of their son-in-law Matthew Cooke, who was among the injured.

"He's been shot in the abdomen and that's all we know," Jamie Casteel told The Associated Press.

She said Cook, from New York state, had been home from Iraq for about a year.

Amber Bahr, 19, was shot in the stomach but was in stable condition, said her mother, Lisa Pfund of Random Lake, Wis.

"We know nothing, just that she was shot in the belly," Pfund said.

She couldn't provide more details and only spoke with emergency personnel.

Ashley Saucedo told WOOD-TV in Michigan that her husband was shot in the arm, but she couldn't discuss specifics.

Saucedo said she and the couple's two children weren't permitted to leave their home at Fort Hood during the shootings.

The motive for the shooting wasn't clear, but Hasan was apparently set to deploy soon, and had expressed some anger about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said generals at Fort Hood told her that Hasan was about to deploy overseas.

Retired Col. Terry Lee, who said he had worked with Hasan, told Fox News he was being sent to Afghanistan.

Lee said Hasan had hoped Obama would pull troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq and got into frequent arguments with others in the military who supported the wars.

For six years before reporting for duty at Fort Hood, in July, the 39-year-old Army major worked at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center pursuing a career in psychiatry, as an intern, a resident and, last year, a fellow in disaster and preventive psychiatry.

He received his medical degree from the military's Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001.

But his record wasn't sterling.

At Walter Reed, he received a poor performance evaluation, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

And while he was an intern, Hasan had some "difficulties" that required counseling and extra supervision, said Dr. Thomas Grieger, who was the training director at the time.

At least six months ago, Hasan came to the attention of law enforcement officials because of Internet postings about suicide bombings and other threats, including posts that equated suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the lives of their comrades.

Investigators had not determined for certain whether Hasan was the author of the posting, and a formal investigation had not been opened before the shooting, said law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the case.

The FBI, local police and other agencies searched Hasan's apartment Thursday night after evacuating the complex in Killeen, said city spokeswoman Hilary Shine.

She referred questions about what was found to the FBI.

The FBI in Dallas referred questions to a spokesman who was not immediately available early Friday morning.

How many other lunatic freakazoid ticking time bomb psychiatrists and psychologists are there now out there, graham, waiting to go off on us like an IED?

Talk about a crying need for healthcare reform, graham, this takes the cake ....

Now you know why I stay clear away from hospitals and doctors ....

God alone knows what is going on in their heads ....

As this case shows, it obviously is not healthy, whatever it is ....

And so ....

Livy, I have to give it to you. Right now you are being more logical than Graham. Not all that much more logical, not every shrink is a wacko, or even most of them.

I respected Eisenhower as a president, graham ....

He integrated the United States military, you know ....

He was very big on civil rights for the black folks ....

Remember how he handled those thugs down there in backwards, benighted Alabama who wouldn't let the black kids go to school down there?

He showed them crackers and red necks something alright .....

He had courage, graham ....

Things went rapidly downhill after him .....

And so ...

Actually Truman integrated the military, and at the time Eisenhower thought it was a bad idea. Not because he was a racist, but because he didn't want to rock the boat.

But he was a good guy and had the the guts to do the right thing when he was President. Two Presidents after him the White House changed the world...

What percentage of these mental health specialists are themselves mental cases, would you say, rla?

The same percentage as the general population...

Do you mean to comfort us with that statement?

and obviously this shooter was hassled and harrassed and bullied because of his religion

there should not be prejudice like that

they say the columbine shooters were bullied and teased

moral is- don't bully people

Well, that is probably part of the story...

Hi RWS.

Every one is capable of Breaking. A psychiatrist is particularly vulnerable due to the war trauma PTSD patients he treated.
We do not know if was scared of the reprisals for a Muslim in Iraq fighting for the USA. Perhaps fighting in the Mideast would mean the "enemy" looked like him.
Whatever the tragedy is a man who fell apart and took life in his own hands.
I was grateful that President Obama included the soldiers lost or fighting wars in his comments on the Fort Hood loss of life.

The one fact that did come out about the military suicide rate was the % of suicides occuring prior to shipping out.

What are we not hearing about this war that is causing this amount of stress on soldiers receiving orders to ship out?

if Obama ended all the wars today, the question is

politically THEY will use it against him

IF that caused him to defeat, the question is-
how easy would it be for them to start a new war elsewhere?

the answer to that, which I do not know, would go far to seeing how easy it would be for Obama not to care about politics and end all wars
