Huge rise in birth defects in Falluja

Iraqi former battle zone sees abnormal clusters of infant tumours and deformities

Martin Chulov in Falluja
Friday 13 November 2009 19.24 GMT

Doctors in Iraq's war-ravaged enclave of Falluja are dealing with up to 15 times as many chronic deformities in infants and a spike in early life cancers that may be linked to toxic materials left over from the fighting.

The extraordinary rise in birth defects has crystallised over recent months as specialists working in Falluja's over-stretched health system have started compiling detailed clinical records of all babies born.

Neurologists and obstetricians in the city interviewed by the Guardian say the rise in birth defects – which include a baby born with two heads, babies with multiple tumours, and others with nervous system problems - are unprecedented and at present unexplainable.

A group of Iraqi and British officials, including the former Iraqi minister for women's affairs, Dr Nawal Majeed a-Sammarai, and the British doctors David Halpin and Chris Burns-Cox, have petitioned the UN general assembly to ask that an independent committee fully investigate the defects and help clean up toxic materials left over decades of war – including the six years since Saddam Hussein was ousted.

"We are seeing a very significant increase in central nervous system anomalies," said Falluja general hospital's director and senior specialist, Dr Ayman Qais. "Before 2003 [the start of the war] I was seeing sporadic numbers of deformities in babies. Now the frequency of deformities has increased dramatically."

The rise in frequency is stark – from two admissions a fortnight a year ago to two a day now. "Most are in the head and spinal cord, but there are also many deficiencies in lower limbs," he said. "There is also a very marked increase in the number of cases of less than two years [old] with brain tumours. This is now a focus area of multiple tumours."

After several years of speculation and anecdotal evidence, a picture of a highly disturbing phenomenon in one of Iraq's most battered areas has now taken shape. Previously all miscarried babies, including those with birth defects or infants who were not given ongoing care, were not listed as abnormal cases.

The Guardian asked a paediatrician, Samira Abdul Ghani, to keep precise records over a three-week period. Her records reveal that 37 babies with anomalies, many of them neural tube defects, were born during that period at Falluja general hospital alone.

Dr Bassam Allah, the head of the hospital's children's ward, this week urged international experts to take soil samples across Falluja and for scientists to mount an investigation into the causes of so many ailments, most of which he said had been "acquired" by mothers before or during pregnancy.

Other health officials are also starting to focus on possible reasons, chief among them potential chemical or radiation poisonings. Abnormal clusters of infant tumours have also been repeatedly cited in Basra and Najaf – areas that have in the past also been intense battle zones where modern munitions have been heavily used.

Falluja's frontline doctors are reluctant to draw a direct link with the fighting. They instead cite multiple factors that could be contributors.

"These include air pollution, radiation, chemicals, drug use during pregnancy, malnutrition, or the psychological status of the mother," said Dr Qais. "We simply don't have the answers yet."

The anomalies are evident all through Falluja's newly opened general hospital and in centres for disabled people across the city. On 2 November alone, there were four cases of neuro-tube defects in the neo-natal ward and several more were in the intensive care ward and an outpatient clinic.

Falluja was the scene of the only two setpiece battles that followed the US-led invasion. Twice in 2004, US marines and infantry units were engaged in heavy fighting with Sunni militia groups who had aligned with former Ba'athists and Iraqi army elements.

The first battle was fought to find those responsible for the deaths of four Blackwater private security contractors working for the US. The city was bombarded heavily by American artillery and fighter jets. Controversial weaponry was used, including white phosphorus, which the US government admitted deploying.

Statistics on infant tumours are not considered as reliable as new data about nervous system anomalies, which are usually evident immediately after birth. Dr Abdul Wahid Salah, a neurosurgeon, said: "With neuro-tube defects, their heads are often larger than normal, they can have deficiencies in hearts and eyes and their lower limbs are often listless. There has been no orderly registration here in the period after the war and we have suffered from that. But [in relation to the rise in tumours] I can say with certainty that we have noticed a sharp rise in malignancy of the blood and this is not a congenital anomaly – it is an acquired disease."

Despite fully funding the construction of the new hospital, a well-equipped facility that opened in August, Iraq's health ministry remains largely disfunctional and unable to co-ordinate a response to the city's pressing needs.

The government's lack of capacity has led Falluja officials, who have historically been wary of foreign intervention, to ask for help from the international community. "Even in the scientific field, there has been a reluctance to reach out to the exterior countries," said Dr Salah. "But we have passed that point now. I am doing multiple surgeries every day. I have one assistant and I am obliged to do everything myself."

POST 36. I'm a disabled Army Nurse from Desert Storm; my daughter came back home from Iraq and had a baby a year later. My little granddaugher has Goldenhars' Syndrome. Google Goldenhars' and Gulf War and see how many hits you get. I wonder how many Iraq War babies will be born with this condition? The Pentagon released a study last year stating that Gulf War Syndrome was caused by a combination of the use of pesticides, oil well fires and the use of pyridostigmine bromide, which we used to supposedly combat nerve gas exposure. Yeah, right. Then, why are so many kids coming back from the Gulf in today's wars with the same symptoms? Oil well fires, PB, and pesticides aren't being used in any combination now; the only commonality in these wars is DU. The military is just using a bogus report to allow them to keep using one of the most highly effective weapons they have ever had.

I was a marathon runner when I went to Desert Storm. Within two years of coming back, I was having mini-strokes, seizures, and lost hearing in one ear. Docs told me I had contracted a disease common to the Middle East called Behcet's Disease. Well, it so happens, I'm an RN. There is no lab or specific tests to diagnose Behcets. It is an entirely clinical diagnosis based on three or more of it's characteristic symptoms. And guess what? I only have ONE of them. These poor kids coming home have a time bomb ticking in their bodies. They fought an unjust war. They're coming home with PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. Now, they may have another war to fight with their health and yet another one with the health of their future offspring. Oh, and don't forget, they'll also have to wait forever to get through the red tape to get VA benefits for their disabilites, and be losing their jobs, declaring bankruptcies, and all that other great stuff that I had to go through when I got too sick to hold a job. Damn Bush I & II, and this Oil Oligarchy running our country. And double damn Obama if he doesn't do something about getting our kids out of these hellholes NOW!!

TOO RISKY FOR BUSINESS

Financial Institutions and Uranium Weapons

Abstract of a briefing paper by ICBUW - Netwerk Vlaanderen -BankTrack, November 2007
Full Dossier available at www.mymoneyclearconscience.be

Uranium weapons. Despite the fact that weapons containing depleted uranium are not widely known, they have been produced and used on a massive scale. The health consequences of these weapons, which also continue after the end of the armed conflict in which they are used, are becoming clearer. Depleted uranium is a radioactive and chemically toxic waste product from the nuclear industry. It is used in anti-tank weapons and in the armour of tanks. The use of these weapons creates clouds of tiny metal particles that contaminate the battlefield and surrounding environment for millions of years. Scientific research has shown that depleted uranium causes cancer, birth defects, and other serious health problems. The effects have been recorded in both soldiers and civilians.

There is also a growing awareness that these weapons breach the most fundamental human rights. Military trade unions, human rights organisations and the environmental and peace movements are calling for a world-wide ban on the production of uranium weapons. The financing of these weapons has also been brought into question.

The companies who produce these weapons are readily supplied with capital by large financial groups- capital that makes the production of these weapons possible. The research report ‘Too Risky for Business. Financial Institutions and Uranium Weapons.’ shows that 47 financial institutions are currently investing in producers of uranium weapons. Three US stockmarket listed companies: Alliant Techsystems, GenCorp and General Dynamics, are supported by financiers from Canada, the US, Japan, Great Britain, France, Germany, Taiwan, Singapore and Italy.

In the period july 2004 – june 2007, these institutions guaranteed credit facilities worth atotal of at least 3 billion US $. The financial institutions have also underwritten the issuing of4.2 billion US $ in bonds and 120 million US $ in shares in these companies. Various financiers also hold significant shareholdings in the producers of uranium weapons.

This research is limited to 3 large companies, and the investment period 2004-2007. The total investments in this sector are therefore higher than the amounts revealed in this report. The figures form a worrying indication of the involvement of the financial sector in the proliferation of uranium weapons.

The civilian and military community calls on investors to act responsibly and put an end to their support for the production of uranium weapons. A number of investors have already taken this step. Others will hopefully follow. Governments also have an important role toplay here. Just as with a ban on investments in weapons such as anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions, governments can ensure that banks are no longer legally able to invest in producers of uranium weapons.

Via actions in many countries, the International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons calls on the banks mentioned in this report to take a positive step and implement an investment policy that no longer allows this sort of investment.

At the bank

ICBUW members are actively campaigning to stop banks investing in companies who produce DU weapons, cluster munitions and land mines.

Does your bank support uranium weapons manufacturers?

On November 6th 2007 ICBUW member organisations launched a global disinvestment campaign against investments by high street banks and investment companies around the world in the manufacturers of uranium weapons. This is campaigning that anyone with a bank account can take part in, not only individuals but also schools, business and other organisations.

Banks play a crucial role in financing product development, acquisitions and expansion in the arms industry. We believe that banks also have a crucial role to play in cleaning up the financial system and in turn, the arms industry.

Through the research of Netwerk Vlaaderen, Banktrack and War on Want, we now have data on the extent to which many of your high street banks finance the manufacturers of illegal and indiscriminate weapon systems. Not only uranium weapons but often cluster bombs, land mines and nuclear weapons.

As customers it is up to us to use what influence we have to encourage the banking system to clean up its act.

Here's how...

Step 1 - Check who you bank with.
Many large financial institutions own subsidiaries, it can be complicated trying to unpick the web that they weave, http://www.wikipedia.org has some good information on banks and their businesses. For example, the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) owns Citizen’s Bank in the US and not only invests in DU manufacturers but has also long been financier to the oil industry. Keep a critical eye out for ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ reports, they inevitably contain a lot of greenwash and marketing babble.

Step 2 - Get informed.
At the end of this article are two reports: ‘Too Risky for Business’ details investments by dozens of banks worldwide, including banks in the US, Germany, Japan etc. In all likelihood yours will be on here. The abstract has a handy table of banks and their investments. If you bank with any of the major UK banks, War on Want’s excellent ‘Banking on Bloodshed’ is a good place to start. Alternatively CADU has produced a UK-specific leaflet, you can download it at the end of this article.

Step 3 - Ethical banking.
There are banks out there that refuse to invest in the arms industry or in the manufacturers of indiscriminate weapons. Two examples are the UK Cooperative Bank and Triodos. The Cooperative has recently classified uranium weapons as indiscriminate and banned investments into their manufacturers.

Step 4 – Close your account.
If you have identified that your bank invests in indiscriminate weapons, close your account and tell them why you are doing it. You’ll want to send a letter to your branch and to the bank’s head office. It seems like a pain but it is easier than you think to move accounts, the bank you are moving it to will make it easy for you, you may want to explain to them why you are doing it.

Step 5 – Why stop there?
Why not encourage family, friends and workmates to shift their accounts too? Employers, organisations and educational establishments may also be fertile ground for action. If you are really incensed by what banks are doing with your money, why not organise an action? You might also want to become a shareholder so that you can raise the issue at the bank’s shareholder meetings. This can be a very effective way or raising the profile of the issue.

Obama administration will not sign land mine ban

By DESMOND BUTLER, Associated Press Writer
Tuesday, November 24, 2009

(11-24) 15:06 PST WASHINGTON (AP) - The Obama administration has decided not to sign an international convention banning land mines.

State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said Tuesday that the administration recently completed a review and decided not to change the Bush-era policy.

"We decided that our land mine policy remains in effect," he said.

More than 150 countries have agreed to the Mine Ban Treaty's provisions to end the production, use, stockpiling and trade in mines. Besides the United States, holdouts include: China, India, Pakistan, Myanmar and Russia.

Human rights groups had expressed hopes that the Obama administration would sign the treaty.

Stephen Goose, the director of Human Rights Watch's arms division, said he was surprised by the announcement and called it disappointing. He said his that group had been pushing the administration to conduct a review of its policy but that the administration had given no indication that one was under way.

"If one was already completed, it was not very extensive," he said.

Kelly said that the United States would send an observer group of mine experts to a review conference on the treaty in Cartegena, Colombia, next week.

A report this month by the International Campaign to Ban Landmines found that mines remain planted in the earth in more than 70 countries and killed at least 1,266 people and wounded 3,891 last year. More than 2.2 million anti-personnel mines, 250,000 anti-vehicle mines and 17 million other explosives left over from wars have been removed since 1999, the report said.
