I just emailed that link to my sister. She is 55 years old and has had polio since she was 5. I've never seen her walk. I remember as a child in elementary school promising God that I would go to mass every morning before school if he would only help her out. As I got older, I realized that God had something else in mind for her. She was extremely active with "Action for the Handicapped" and was invited to dinner at the White House quite a few times when they were battling for equal rights to be able to maneuver around to public buildings, etc....
She has never collected a penny of government money and has worked her entire life out of a wheelchair. Six years ago, she had a heart attack during her last semester of college at Bucknell University (her and her husband paid for it 100%). She took a year off to regroup and finished her Master's degree in Psychology. I have spent my entire life seeing how hard it is for her to get around when we go shopping or just try to take a walk around the block.
Her and her husband pay almost $1000 a month in health insurance just for the 2 of them to get by. He has diabetes. She cried election night and was completely devasted. I have been keeping her up to date on the news in this fabulous forum.
Kerry's health plan was very important to her as was the social security plan that Kerry had.
I owe a lot to my big sister. She's shown me another side of life that many people don't see. Many people just don't realize how hard it is for them to get around on a daily basis just to be a "normal" part of society. They deserve better from the administration.
