Here's an article I did a few weeks ago, mostly for my own understanding, on political swings in US history.

Excerpt:
QUOTE
Major political swings in are measured in decades. A brief summary (from the "Timeline of the US Government" table below):

Republicans controlled the government (more or less) from the start of the Civil War through the beginning of the great depression (1861 to 1933, a total of 72 years).

Democrats controlled the government (more or less) from the early part of the great depression to the end(?) of Southern realignment (1933 to 1995, a total of 62 years).

For the first 66 years (1789 to 1855) a number of parties (Federalist, Jeffersonians, Whigs, etc.) ruled.

The current political realignment starting in 1995 seems to be due in large part to the continuing process of Southern Realignment (see below) which started in the mid-sixties. In addition, it has been reinforced by the war on terrorism starting in 2001.

There's also a chart on Southern Realignment, showing how democrats have lost the South from 1933 to the present.

1933: senate: 93%, house: 99%
2003: senate: 37%, house: 41%

Hopefully, this is the right subforum to post this in.
