Protesters Get Prime Spot for Inauguration
1 hour, 10 minutes ago
By SAM HANANEL, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The National Park Service has agreed to give thousands of anti-war demonstrators a prime spot along President Bush (news - web sites)'s inaugural parade route that will allow them to protest during the procession.

The anti-war group A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition is planning to erect its own bleachers in the space, an open plaza on Pennsylvania Ave., just a few blocks from the Capitol building, said Brian Becker, national coordinator for the group. The bleachers could seat up to 1,000 people and the park service estimates up to 10,000 could fill the space standing shoulder to shoulder.

"I don't think it's ever happened in history that the anti-war movement has ever been able to have this kind of setup," Becker said.

Park service spokesman Bill Line said the agency has offered the space in John Marshall Plaza to the group but is still waiting for them to submit written confirmation. Becker said A.N.S.W.E.R. plans to submit the paperwork as soon as they can work out details about where to set up the bleachers.

The presidential motorcade carrying Bush will pass directly in front of the protesters' bleachers, which will be across the street from other bleachers set up by the official inaugural committee. The plaza, between the federal courthouse and the Canadian embassy, runs about 240 feet along the historic street that stretches from the Capitol to the White House.

The parade gets under way at 2 p.m. EST on Jan. 20 after Bush's swearing-in at the Capitol and a celebratory luncheon.

Becker said he considers the agreement a "partial victory" but still inadequate because the general public, including many who are opposed to the war in Iraq (news - web sites), will not be able to move into other areas along the parade route as they have in the past.

The park service has also issued A.N.S.W.E.R. permits for protesters to stand in nine other locations along Pennsylvania Ave., but Becker said most are "tiny spaces" behind bleachers or in fenced-in areas more than 100 feet from the parade route.

"Those are meaningless areas, we can't use them," Becker said.

The Secret Service (news - web sites) is allowing protesters to carry signs, but they are prohibiting them from being affixed to poles or sticks for security reasons, Becker said.

The A.N.S.W.E.R. coalition plans to host military families with members in Iraq or whose children have been killed there, as well as veterans and anti-war activists from around the country.

Meanwhile, more than a dozen other groups opposing Bush held a news conference Wednesday to highlight the many marches, rallies and acts of civil disobedience set to take place on inauguration day.

A group called "Turn Your Back on Bush" is asking thousands of activists to line the parade route and turn their backs on the president as his motorcade passes. In a separate march, members of the D.C. Anti-War Network will carry 1,000 coffins draped in black to call attention to soldiers dying in Iraq, then stage a "die-in" at Lafayette Park near the White House, spokesman Jim Macdonald said.

I bet the final inaugural parade route will be changed in the last moment. You think Bush is going to allow the protests to be immortalized through the offical media coverage of his day in the sun? The creation of free speech zones had the smell all over it of controlling what people would see through the national press-coverage.

No, count on his opponents being sidetracked.

Personally I would start sending e-mails, making phone calls, sending letters to local and national networks, and newspapers. reminding them that you want to see coverage of this.
Tell them the senario, that you believe this will just be whitewashed, if they don't cover it. This is a peacful protest, if they don't cover it, well...

We must all do our part, no matter where we are, to protest this farce in every way we can:
See http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/index.php?id=809 for several methods of protest.
Wear Something Orange.
Don't go to work... use that personal leave or sick day.
Don't buy anything that day... nada, zip, zero. (not one damn dime)
Throw a wake at your home with friends and family, comfort each other by reading passages from John Stewart's America.
Wear a black hooded sweatshirt
Display the US flag upside down.
Wear a black armband or a black tie.
Gather in your favorite bar or pub and throw pretzels at the TV when they show Der Furher.
Function in stealth mode and don't get hurt... that's the stratigery!

I'll be singing the chorus to this song all day:
(Also on Kevin Spacey's soundtrack to Beyond the Sea)

Bobby Darin
Simple Song of Freedom

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you've never sung before
      Let it fill the air
      Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don't want a war.

Hey, there, mister black man, can you hear me?
I don't want your diamonds or your game
I just want to be someone known to you as me
And I will bet my life you want the same.

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you’ve never sung before
      Let it fill the air
      Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don’t want a war.

Seven hundred million are ya list'nin’?
Most of what you read is made of lies
But, speakin’ one to one ain't it everybody's sun
To wake to in the mornin’ when we rise?

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you’ve never sung before
      Let it fill the air
      Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don’t want a war.

      Brother Solzhenitsyn, are you busy?
If not, won't you drop this friend a line
Tell me if the man who is plowin' up your land
Has got the war machine upon his mind?

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you’ve never sung before
      Let it fill the air
      Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don’t want a war.

Now, no doubt some folks enjoy doin' battle
Like presidents, prime ministers and kings
So, let's all build them shelves
Where they can fight among themselves
Leave the people be who love to sing.

Come and sing a simple song of freedom
Sing it like you’ve never sung before
      Let it fill the air
      Tell the people everywhere
We, the people here, don’t want a war.

I say … let it fill the air …
      Tellin’ people everywhere …
We, the people, here don't want a war.

lol.gif I haven't decided if we should mock their 'tin foil hat' label or if it legitimizes it by using it in any form.

I plan on wearing ORANGE! I am going shopping to buy my husband, daughter and I, orange hats, scarfs, gloves, & a sweatshirt to put a decal on. I was going to use mommodona's slogan, inDEBTEDservant on my ten year olds sweat shirt but felt odd about it because my great grandmother was an indentured servant! FOR REAL! I don't want to jinx my daugther. lol.gif Call me superstitiuos. <_<

My son cannot miss school so he wont be going, but the rest of us will with BIG SIGNS in hand!!!

Great idea!

luapitifer has compiled an excellent list of media contacts which makes for an easy copy and paste to create a distribution email list. Every activist should have a media distribution list set up, imo. wink.gif The list he set up is kind of difficult to find, it's here:

I BCC all of my distribution lists whether they are media contact lists or volunteer lists. Blind copy prevents stealing of lists (if they are personal or volunteers) and the recipient of course does not know who else you copied.

Thanks, good idea. But I doubt they will be moved by emails from a couple of activists. Our emails are invisible to their viewers/readers, and as long as their revenue streams are fine they'll just redirect our emails to dev/null if we don't fit in to their overall agenda.

IMHO -
For those whom are fortunate enough to actually attend the DC event I think the important thing to keep in mind is stealth -infiltrating the crowd as a Shrub supporter and when the "big guy" goes by - show him your backside. That way the corporate sponsored news coverage and security goon squads don't know what's up until it's already happened. They will have no way of weeding out the protestors if they don't show overt clues of their intentions...

Yeah turn around just before the limo passes and shake your naked butt cheeks.

That's a good idea. Like the people at the Repub convention
who snuck in. How in the world did they manage that?

Not for everybody, but very useful nonetheless. (Remember Yankee Doodle and his fashion statement?)
You could sing a song too...

Yankee Doodle came to town,
trying to vote for Kerry,
stuck a ballot in tin-hat
told it was ordinary.

Yankee Doodle keep it up,
Yankee Doodle dandy,
Mind electric tabulators -
keep those punch cards handy.

Told those redcoats we're in town,
but they no sooner see us,
than their lists remove our names
our color blue to grieve us.

Yankee Doodle keep it up,
Yankee Doodle dandy,
Mind the color name you drop,
and keep Jim Crow laws handy.

And then there is always the old favorite: "John Brown's body is a mouldering in the grave... the truth goes marching on."
Buster0001
One thing has changed. I used to be afraid to express my
opinion about Bush, since I live in Texas. Not anymore.
I realize that was part of the problem, being silent about it.

The manager from the Vt station implied that the 150 emails he recieved asking to end the airing of Rush and begin airing Air America made a difference. He also mentioned he had recieved 50 emails thanking him.

Conyers noted that he had recieved 13,000 emails supporting his first report on voter irregs.

I remember when Judy Woodruff made some comment about media bias and how many emails she had recieved with this topic during the primaries. She was NOT happy! lol.gif

I've also heard Aaron Brown comment on how many emails he had gotten about voter fraud. He said something sarcastic like, I think everyone who does believe it is emailing me. Apparently, he was not too pleased with all of the emails he recieved on this.

They do count the emails even though they may not really read through them. Email campaigns may not be the most effective means, but they do have some impact.

They have researchers and assistants that keep track. It's one informal way they keep a read on the market. Same for politicians.

Did you read the post about the Dean site in PA that sent tons of emails to a Congressman who was proposing legislation that required women who had miscarriages to report it to the police? He emailed back the person in charge of the email campaign and acknowledged all of the emails he had recieved from that people from that site.

They may not like it and they may not agree with whats written, they may not ever really read every word, but they do track them.
