This just in.....someone thinks I'm worthy of work!!! I have no idea what the job really entails and they don't seem to have much of a clue either! I'm going to be a graduate assistant for my university in the Center for Teaching Excellence.

What do I know about that? Not much! I did enough research to be able to muster up a paragraph that sounded like I had a clue, but not much else.

The man in charge says I'm to answer phones, write web content, take pictures of events, schedule and make arrangements for events and upload information on the internet. Other than that, I'm free to be imaginative and innovative about the role. If I wish to do more, I am free to do so.

Do any of you teachers or professors have any idea what I'm supposed to do in a Center for Teaching Excellence?

Congrats! I don't know anything about that area specifically, but IMO, anytime you are not being micromanaged, it's a good thing!

It sounds like you have a lot of opportunity there to pick up the ball and run with it---use your intellect and creative skills to define the job description. After you take it up a level, ask for a raise! lol.gif

The freedom is what I love about having my own business with my husband, aside from not having a boss, we can implement new ideas and expand as we see fit. We've had our business for 10 years and it has evolved and grown a lot over that time.

What type of events will you be covering?

Congratulations!! They are lucky to have you. It won't take you any time at all to figure out what they need then your imagination and innovation will be welcomed.

Congratulations!

I wish you well heart. I hope they'll give you internet access and freedom from prying eyes so you can stay a part of this message board. Your posts have always been very informative.

Hmmm, Center for Teaching Excellence? I hope that's not an offshoot of the Excellence in Broadcasting Network...

A lot of it will be P. R.
heart
PR (heart shakes in boots)....look at ME..DOES A GIRL WITH AN AK LOOK A PR PERSON TO YOU!!! YIKES!!! I'm in trouble if they want a nice-nice person.

I hope they actually want something done...I'm not much for "the art of saying nothing but in a positive way" (best definition of politics I've ever heard). I'm a "fix it" no matter what it takes" kind of person...I rock boats...I move heaven and earth...I do not understand the words "no" and "impossible" and that doesn't make a good PR person!!
chi
That is the perfect P.R. person for something she believes in.

Let me tell you a story LOL.

I took a certain biology class in 1996. I got to thinking (always a problem when I do that) and devised a way that smell could be transmitted over the internet. It required chemical to electrical transmission that would hook up to a box hooked up to a personal PC or a PC in a perfume store. I determined that it COULD be done theoretically and got up my nerve to go talk to my grouchy Professor.

I explained the process to him. He said "that's impossible" and "If you were hoping to make your millions that way, you better think again". Well, I was initially embarrassed, but as I left his office I was still convinced my idea was sound.

It was! Two Israeli scientists figured out how to do it, and a year later people started experimenting with it.

The thing is that I was not content to say to myself "the professor was wrong". Instead, since 1996, he gets quarterly missives from me about the evolution of the technology, ALL of the emails are titled "NEVER TELL YOUR STUDENTS THAT ANYTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE". He's never answered a single letter in 8 years, but I have heard through the grapevine that he talks about it to his students! LOL

lol.gif Where there is a will, there IS a way!

That's a great attitude to have, Heart. It will take you far. We've been told by more "seasoned" real estate investors many times, 'that's tooooo risky, you wil lose money' 'IT WONT WORK" and we have NEVER lost money on an investment, not yet. If we ever do, it wont stop us! :D

Everything is a calculated risk. Some risks carry a higher probability of actualizing while others carry a higher probability of failing. Those who are willing to take big risks are the ones who are the big winners! As they say, if you fail, try, try again.

This is not to say, that we totally dimiss what others more experienced tell us, well sometimes we do, but we factor in their oppinions into our decisions if their oppinions are pertinent.

It sounds like you are the one laughing all the way to the bank, so to speak, not your old professor! lol.gif
so angry I could spit

Isn't PR all about getting folks to sit up and take notice? I'd say the AK gives you leverage so people will listen.

a yes man or someone who just makes nice doen't get the job done, you go do what you do best!

I doubt Heart would be anyone's "yes" woman! And that's a GOOD think, IMO!

Congratulations. Take that freedom and run with it. Higher education has a really high quality of worklife. Maybe you can structure your time so as to do a lot of your own research and writing.

But beware of some conditions that such the oxygen out of the air. Avoid meetings unless they really want to hear your recommendations or let you participate in making decisions.

Not a friggin' clue, but it sounds like they want you to help make excellent teachers, so it can't be bad. lol.gif Congratulations!

And I agree with Ultraist!

You'll find more and more in education that very few people actually want to get anything done. At least on an administrative level, so be prepared to fight for what you want.

Congratulations! I can't think of a better person for this job. Just check on the net......there's plenty of examples for you. I'd like to suggest you do an article on Toyota Teachers.......Toyota helped us out during the whole Sinclaire thing and they work towards making us all better teachers.

best wishes marie

Congrats ! If it is a PR type of job, and you tend to be a bit too outspoken, then you will learn how to couch your language wink.gif What a great opportunity to learn on the job lol.gif

Seriously, good luck and I am sure you will do fine- keep us posted.

(BTW: check out some of the education topics here at the main page. You will find some pretty savvy teachers....... you might PM them for ideas)

Thanks all!

I found out that their sole motive seems to be to maintain the status quo. I have to come up with ways to spend money. Any attempt to make things more efficient seems to make waves. I was instructed to learn "Dreamweaver" and to work on the webpage...and to look for a new stero system for the lounge. I found one for about $100 and I was told that's too inexpensive. It seems that if you don't spend the same amount or more every year, your budget is cut. That's not helping my support of government programs...why do people think this way? I want to provide a quality education for students and teachers. They want to waste money to keep their money flowing. It makes no sense, but then, it's not my job to tell them that. It just disgusts me to watch them take out "every other florecscent lightbulb down the hallway" to save money, turning down the heat and the A/C temp to 80, while these people find ways to support their budget.
marie
Get used to it. If I told you what I spend on my classroom and students you'd faint.

Just got told we're on our way to a budget crisis in 09. Just hope we can fight it off. I'm so tired of being rif'd.

good luck. Check ebay for a stereo. Might find a nice used one there.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D

damn, when this first popped up on the new posts list a couple weeks ago i'd intended to come back to it and then lost it's track. i was hoping to find you'd gotten signed onto to some FP-related institute or something, that you'd do well there. but i'd sorta forgotten about the AK47 tongue.gif
heart
No Marie: They want me to spend MORE money. I was not allowed to consider e-bay or anything else. We have to USE this money! It's nuts! I even negotiated a price for a pizza lunch and my boss looked at me like I was crazy...he didn't even know you could GET a discount if you were a educational institution and considered it kind of "cheap". WOW! Weird.

Luap....yeah....diplomacy is *usually* not my forte. But, the truth is, everyone calls me when they want to know how they should handle a difficult situation (I have a charming side too) or when they want the government to replace a stop sign (I have a "lawyer" side too). Or when they want someone to know that life will not be good for them if they don't stop endangering people (that would be my "I'm going to make sure you pay...either in man hours talking to me, or by fixing the problem it's totally up to you" side:). I'm not a half bad person to have on your side actually...I mean that is if you're looking for a defender and your cause is just:).

Congrats Heart.... My RAs don't do a whole lot other than discuss good research ideas and spend a lot of time in the library.
heart
What kind of research is the question? I thought I would be a good researcher too. But I think this was the wrong "research" to do:).

My "boss" sent me this email which read "heads up" about the new guy who would be in charge of Alumni and Corporate Giving. So I thought he must have sent this to me for a "reason" and I did some "research" on the guy and came to work and told my "boss' this guys whole life story including his politics, his dissertation thesis, and even his history of engaging which corporations for giving, along with a book the guy wrote, the languages it was tranlated into, and what it was about.

I scared the daylights out of my "boss". OOPS! I'm glad I didn't tell him the amount that the guy had contributed to the Republican Party:).

heart, i truly meant my endorsement, that you'd be good in an FP-related endeavour despite that we are often on different sides of our primary issue. i sense that you do have that 'heart' even in face of the need for defense of israel (which i am certainly in favor of, just how things play out or are played out is where our issues come in). that 'fairness' and 'justice' are at forefront for you.

so yeah, i'm sure you'd be good to have on my side!

explicitly, congratulations, hope you find you can make it work and towards a goal that you feel good about! smile.gif
