U.S. Withdraws Ambassador From Syria

By BARRY SCHWEID, AP Diplomatic Writer

WASHINGTON - The United States has recalled its ambassador to Syria amid rising tensions over the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri of Lebanon.

Before departing, U.S. Ambassador Margaret Scobey delivered a stern note, called a demarche in diplomatic parlance, to the Syrian government, said an official who discussed the situation only on grounds of anonymity.

State Department spokesman Richard Boucher, announcing the move, said it reflected the Bush administration's "profound outrage" over Hariri's assassination.

Boucher did not accuse Syria of being involved in the bombing Monday in Beirut. "I have been careful to say we do not know who committed the murder at this time," he said.

But he said the deadly attack illustrated that Syria's strong military and political presence in Lebanon was a problem and had not provided security in the neighboring country.

"It reminds us even more starkly that the Syrian presence in Lebanon is not good," Boucher said. "It has not brought anything to the Lebanese people."

Boucher refused to describe Syria's reaction to Scobey's diplomatic messages in Damascus. Syria has not yet taken any reciprocal action, such as withdrawing its own ambassador to Washington.

Meanwhile, European Union (news - web sites) foreign policy chief Javier Solana said he sees no immediate need to change EU relations with Syria. In an interview with The Associated Press, Solana said he would also support an international investigation into the bombing.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan, apparently referring to the note Scobey delivered to the Syrian foreign ministry, said the United States has "made it clear to Syria that we expect Syria to act in accordance with the United Nations (news - web sites) Security Council resolution calling for the withdrawal of all foreign forces and the disbanding of militias,"

Also, McClellan said, "we also made it clear to Syria that we want them to use their influence to prevent the kind of terrorist attack that took place yesterday from happening."

The administration had earlier condemned the killing of Hariri, a billionaire construction magnate who masterminded the recovery of his country, and insisted that Syria comply with a U.N. resolution calling for the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon.

Hariri, like most Lebanese politicians, walked a thin line between criticizing Damascus and deferring to the country that plays a dominant role in Lebanon's affairs.

He resigned four months ago in light of tensions with Syria but was weighing a political comeback. A Sunni Muslim, Hariri was on good terms with Lebanese Christians and was especially close to French President Jacques Chirac, who has called for an international investigation.

Assistant Secretary of State William Burns, who heads the Near East bureau, will attend Hariri's funeral, a gesture of U.S. respect for the former prime minister.

The administration did not directly support Chirac on his call for an international inquiry, but the White House said those responsible for the bombing of Hariri's motorcade must be punished.

In Washington for meetings with Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) and Rice, the Egyptian foreign minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said "it is still premature to reach conclusions" about Hariri's assassination.

Speaking at the Brookings Institution thinktank, Gheit said he hoped it would not touch off a cycle of killings and push Lebanon into civil war.

I'd say that the Syrians better be diggin' in deep... ready up for BushCo's shock and awe "Saddam" style visit. The U.S. Withdrawl of their Ambassador From Syria
is a very good sign that it's coming soon, as Syria has done nothing to draw this deliberate invasion.

I also expect that this invasion will discover 'planted' WMDs, Saddam related items and old Baathist personnel as BushCo can't stand to be holding a batting average of .010 for this long without some 'glorified' moment to boost Bush ratings to the world. Syria is our next $200 billion 'down the drain' adventure.

Yes, this is it wliberty.

I just didn't know just how BushCo was going to dress it up as for reason's why. I sensed it would involve Israel though. The actual insertion into Syria may happen this month or March I would say. That's what has been pretty much planned. I see Bush is pushing another $82billion through Congress for Afghanistan and Iraq right now and that may be the hold off in order to get that money for Iraq first and then rip us for another $100 billion for Syria March/April.

Who are we planning on using as the invading force the US border patrol? My Lord, the man has chutzpah doesn't he. Israel's NOT going to invade Syria...unless Syria hit Israel with WMD...now I sound like you guys! He's not going to invade Syria, it's just tough tactics.

I have no idea where additional forces will come from. I stated months ago about many troops from Iraq will probably be redeployed into Syria. Yes I know... Iraq will turn into a clustermuck as US troop levels drop in Iraq ... as civil war rages. New stateside troops may contribute another 50,000 more. I think that Rumsfield thinks (like he did with Iraq) that Syria will only require only 50,000 troops. Possibly few troops from Israel as they may be used to flank Syria from the north or east. They also think that the UN (foreign countries) will supply additional troops... another pipe dream. Britian will contribute maybe 5,000 troops. This is totally an unknown with BushCo and their warped way of thinking.

This is how BushCo operates... with absolute pissant brains. They think that with more wars, that men of the USA all will take arms and go fight these wars with no question. I hope that young men will come to their senses.... as Vietnam was 'supposed' to teach us all something. It sure did me but more about my own govt than foreign govts.

Notice how Rumsfeld and the mega-hawks in Congress are trying to scare us to death again, this time about Iran and Syria. How much of these tactics have to do with Bush wanting more money for war in the Middle East, and needing additional leverage to get it?
