When the U.S. Congress returns to Washington on November 15th, it will vote on the final version of the Labor-HHS Appropriations bill-which provides funding for a host of health care programs, including family planning. Before adjourning in October, both the House and Senate passed separate versions of this bill. Currently, a committee is working out the differences between the two.
One of those differences is the anti-choice Weldon amendment, which is included in the House's version of the bill but not the Senate's. Please contact your representatives and ask them to help make sure the Weldon amendment is not included in the final version of the bill.
The Weldon amendment is a dangerous refusal clause that would allow virtually any health care entity to refuse to provide, cover, pay for, or even refer patients for abortion services-even when such actions are otherwise legally mandated by the federal or a state government. In addition, it would allow health care providers who receive public money to refuse to provide women with unintended pregnancies information concerning all their legal options. Currently, clinics receiving Title X funding must provide patients with complete and unbiased information on all their options. Please help to remove this amendment from the bill.
Additionally, the Senate version of the Labor-HHS bill includes a $30 million increase in funding for the Title X family planning program, while the House version does not include any funding increase for the program. Please ask your representatives to include the $30 million increase in the final version of the bill. Thank you!
