News Scoop: Kerry to Join Press Conference on Electoral Reform Tomorrow
16 February 2005

Here’s a follow up to Ron’s earlier post “ Kerry Working on Voting Rights ”…

I have received word from a trusted source that John Kerry will be joining Barbara Boxer, Stephanie Tubbs Jones, and Hilary Clinton in a major press conference on Electoral Reform tomorrow at 12:45.

Word has it, that Kerry will be revealing tomorrow during the press conference, that his email sent to supporters through JohnKerry.com on January 5th urging them to call Senator Leader Bill Frist and House Speaker Dennis Hastert and “demand that Congress commit itself this year to reforming the electoral system,” resulted in over 35,000 phone calls to their offices. The buzz that day on the blogs was that we shut down the phone lines to both offices.

There is no doubt that John Kerry has been a busy man for the past few weeks. He introduced the “Kids Come First Act”; he spoke last week at the Brookings Institution on the Kyoto Protocol; and on Monday, he spoke at the Worcester Telegram and Gazette Visions Ceremony on standing by our military. And, that is only a portion of what he has been up to in recent weeks. He has also introduced multiple pieces of legislation to help and protect Small Businesses, as the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Small Business & Entrepreneurship.

Wasn't this only a two-day period? That's a lot of calls.

Oops! Just saw the date of the e-mail. One day. Wow!

It sounds more and more like he'll run in 2008. I hope so.

Keep up to the good work, Sen. Kerry!

It also sounds more and more like Kerry is stepping up to the plate as the true leader he is. This is great news!

Is this why all of a sudden there are dire warnings of Al Quaeda attacking? I figured it was Syria, but maybe dubya just put his pal Porter up to the doom and gloom today to get the tv cameras off this upcoming press conference.

I was trapped indoors by an ice storm Jan. 5 waiting for a big tree to fall and smash my house so the request to call Hastert and Frist came as a welcome distraction. It took me 6 hours to get through to Frist's office; the last 2 hours I had to just sit and hit redial every 10 seconds. And when I did, the cranky exhausted voice on the other end told me why. "Is this about Senator Kerry and election reform?" lol.gif

Maybe that's why I was so incredulous over some people's anger that Kerry wasn't present for the electoral count. There's more than one way to make your presence felt.

State of Missouri (with the accent on the first syllable). I've heard people say that for as long as I can remember, but it's really the truth now with Matt Blunt in the governor's mansion and all those right wing yahoos (with their raspberries and sirens) in the General Assembly. sad.gif

Sorry to hear that. I hope if the kooks at the national level are exposed, they turn on their own and their party will implode. It's not impossible:

Sean Hannity apparently referred to the far-right web forum FreeRepublic.com as a childish site controlled by fringe elements.

The denizens of FreeRepublie are not happy.

I so look forward to this press conference tomorrow. Imagine how they're going to respond!

John Kerry Calls for Election Reform

Below is a statement from Senator John Kerry on election reform. Today, he will participate in a press conference on Capitol Hill at 12:45 in Russell 188 with Senators Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio).

Thursday, February 17, 2005

“Free and fair elections are the foundation of our democracy. In the last year, millions more Americans registered and went to the polls than ever before. We saw millions in Iraq and Afghanistan vote for the first time in their lives. Yet, thousands upon thousands of Americans still fear that when they walk into the polls to vote, there is a very real chance that their vote will not be counted or they will lose the opportunity to vote at all because they are forced to stand in line for hours due to a shortage of machines.

“Faulty voting machines have no place in the greatest democracy on earth. Barriers to voting are an insult to the freest, greatest nation in the world.

“Last month, I sent out an email to Americans urging them to ask the Republican leadership in the House and Senate to make election reform a priority this Congress. In just one day 35,000 people called Senator Frist and Congressman Hastert's offices and urged them to hold hearings on election reform. I'm committed to making sure their voices are heard and Congress and the Administration make electoral reform a reality this year.

“I am proud today to join with my colleagues, Senators Clinton and Boxer, Congresswoman Tubbs Jones and Congressman Conyers, and the nation's leading civil rights groups to advance comprehensive election reform.

“Congress must take action to ensure all Americans have faith in future elections that the votes they stood in line to cast are counted. “Today, I once again call on our Republican colleagues to make protecting voting rights a priority and to put election reform legislation on the legislative calendar this year. I call on Congress to keep its promise and fully fund the Help America Vote Act, fund the activities of the Election Assistance Commission, and help states invest in better voting machines with paper trails.

“We must put party politics aside and join together as proud American citizens to eliminate barriers to voting, encourage the greatest level of civic participation possible, and restore confidence in the notion that every eligible voter will have the opportunity to cast a ballot and have it counted.”
