21 Die in Suicide Bombing in Baghdad Washington Post
At least 29 people were killed Sunday in the Iraqi capital in two dissimilar but deadly attacks -- one a spectacular suicide bombing at a military recruiting center, the other a clandestine massacre of a sleeping family in a residential neighborhood. The bombing occurred just before 9 a.m. at Baghdad's Muthanna airport, a former government airstrip near the city center that has been converted into a facility for processing army recruits. According to witnesses and police, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive belt near a crowd of men waiting to enter the recruiting center. According to the Defense Ministry, the explosion killed 21 people and wounded at least 34, which would make it Baghdad's deadliest bombing since June 19, when a suicide bomber killed 23 people in a restaurant popular with Iraqi police. Medical workers quoted by news services put the death toll at between 16 and 25 people.

200 feared drowned in Indonesia Guardian Unlimited
As many as 200 people are feared dead after a ferry capsized in rough seas off eastern Indonesia, a rescue official said today. The 150-ton KMP Digul sank on Thursday night off the coast of Papua province while heading from the port town of Merauke to Tanah Merah, about 200km (124 miles) to the north, according to emergency services in the region. The ferry was officially reported to be carrying 50 crew and passengers. But survivors said about 200 people were on board, Sumpeno Juono, of the local search and rescue agency, told the Associated Press. So far, only 15 people - two crewmen and 13 passengers - have been found. Mr Sumpeno said the ferry - which was also carrying vehicles, heavy equipment and 40 tonnes of diesel oil - did not have any safety equipment and sank quickly.

I'm just a regular working mom Telegraph.co.uk
America's most famous spy was doing her best to stay out of the unwelcome limelight last week. "I'm just a mom getting dinner ready for my kids," Valerie Wilson said with a smile at her hilltop home in one of Washington's best neighbourhoods. "You better talk to my husband." Mrs Wilson, 42, a slim and glamorous blonde in black T-shirt and trousers, was indeed grilling steaks on the barbecue and cooking sweetcorn on the stove as she chatted to her five-year-old twins in their spacious open-plan kitchen. Samantha grated cheese while Trevor was disappointed that he had slept through a thunderstorm. Outside, Mrs Wilson's husband, Joe, lit a cigar and poured drinks for friends on their wooden deck, which has a commanding view to the Washington Monument. An American flag flew at the house.

Florida, Alabama to Start Clean Up After Hurricane Dennis Bloomberg
Florida, Alabama and Mississippi began clean-up efforts after Hurricane Dennis tore through the northern Gulf of Mexico coastline, causing billions of dollars of damage and two US deaths. Florida crews began assessing roadways and bridges last night and have yet to allow evacuated residents to return home, said Ian Satter of the Florida State Emergency Operations Center. Some 1.2 million Floridians were told to evacuate. ``We want to make sure everything's in order,'' Satter said in a phone interview from Tallahassee. ``It's still raining pretty heavy.'' In Alabama, about a third of the 500,000 residents in the southern part of the state were told to leave the area, though a curfew in Mobile was lifted late yesterday, said Sergeant James Brown of the U.S. Army National Guard, which is working with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency.

NZ's nuclear ban stays: PM Xinhua
New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark has promised that New Zealand's nuclear ban is here to stay. She made the commitment at Sunday night's Auckland commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior ship. Two decades ago, bombs were allegedly planted by French agents in response to Greenpeace's protests against the French nuclear testing program in the Pacific, sinking the Rainbow Warrior and killing photographer Fernando Pereira. Clark said the nuclear issue is just as relevant now as it was 20 years ago when Greenpeace was protesting against nuclear testing in the Pacific.

One Hand Tied Behind Your Back John Kerry
HERE'S THEIR PLAN:
  • 1. Nominate an opponent of Roe v. Wade and civil right.
  • 2. Silence all opposition.
  • 3. Control the Supreme Court for decades.
Give voice to your values.
Protect the Supreme Court's independence.

.
QUOTE(" One Hand Tied Behind Your Back")
Dear Friend,
Let's make our principles crystal clear right out of the box. We will never support a Supreme Court nominee intent on reversing Roe v. Wade and undoing critical civil rights protections. And we will never accept a double standard that says, on a decision vital to America's future, President Bush's most extreme supporters can campaign all-out while you and I are urged to be silent. I am asking you to endorse and help pay for a powerful message that will appear in the days ahead in newspapers across the country. Show the President and the Senate just how strongly you feel about protecting our fundamental freedoms:
http://contribute.johnkerry.com/
From the range of choices the White House is currently considering, America and the Constitution would be best served if President Bush chooses a nominee in the mold of Sandra Day O'Connor, who was named to the Court by no less of a conservative than Ronald Reagan and approved unanimously by the United States Senate. But President Bush's most extreme supporters are demanding a nominee who doesn't think or act anything like Justice O'Connor. They want a rigid ideologue who will reverse what President Bush has called the "settled law" of Roe v. Wade, one who will support their efforts to use the Supreme Court as a battering ram to undo decades of progress on civil rights, Roe v. Wade, and privacy.
They want something else as well.
They want you and me to participate in this momentous debate about fundamental freedoms with one hand tied behind our back. They actually expect us to step aside while they roll over our rights. Let's prove that we will never let that happen.
http://contribute.johnkerry.com/
While they unleash a multi-million dollar advertising campaign on behalf of President Bush's choice in close coordination with the White House, you and I are supposed to remain silent -- lest we be charged with "rushing to judgment." While they conduct a no-holds-barred effort to brush aside any and all questions about the nominee's record and his or her commitment to protecting individual freedom, you and I are supposed to be silenced for fear of being called "obstructionists" and cowered by their threat to revive the "nuclear option." That's worse than unacceptable. It's un-American, and it's not how we carry on public debate in the greatest democracy on earth. Show them that, with the future of the Supreme Court on the line, we won't stand on the sidelines:
http://contribute.johnkerry.com/
I know I can count on your support in making the following commitment: I will insist on a complete and full examination of the record of President Bush's nominee. And, if that nominee is intent on reversing Roe v. Wade and essential Supreme Court protections for civil rights, I will use every option I have as a United States Senator to keep that nominee off the Court.
Sincerely,
John Kerry

P.S. Don't let them silence our voices. Go out in your community and spread the word along to everyone you know by passing on this message. We must all commit ourselves to standing up for Roe V. Wade and our civil rights.
Let's make our principles crystal clear right out of the box.
We will never support a Supreme Court nominee intent on reversing Roe v. Wade and undoing critical civil rights protections. Why Hurricane Dennis Let US Off Lightly National Geographic
Hurricane Dennis, one of the most intense July hurricanes on record in the US, came ashore yesterday afternoon at Santa Rosa Island, Florida, just off Pensacola. Despite its 120-mile-an-hour (190-kilometer-an hour) winds, Dennis's U.S. landfall was considerably weaker than expected, largely due to unusually cool seas and the "choking" effect of thunderstorms that were spawned by the hurricane. The small eye of the compact, fast-moving storm struck about 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of where Hurricane Ivan made landfall in Alabama last fall. Residents on the Gulf of Mexico coast had feared that Hurricane Dennis would inflict massive damage and had prepared for a battering. About 500,000 people moved inland as Dennis approached. In Alabama, state officials stopped southbound traffic along a stretch of Interstate 65 during the weekend so all lanes could be used for northbound traffic leaving the city of Mobile.
