There were other women besides Harriet Meiers that should have been offered instead of Alito, but one of the keystone tenets of the extreme right-wingers is that Old Testament view that the male is superior in regard to authoritarian positions. They haven't an inkling of how couples manage that have reciprocal respect and equal status in marriage and/or careers.
This is an enduring delusion, despite the fairly recent acceptance of women in more expansive roles when they enter the military services. In the corporate world there is still the glass ceiling and in income parity still a huge gap. But it is still the women that bear a great burden because of male irresponsibility. I was disappointed when that case was recently before the Court regarding notice to parents if a minor is requesting an abortion, the notice was in my opinion unconstitutional because of omission of requirement to discover who the impregnator was, and if minor, notify his parents equally, if not a minor - then charges appropriate to that should be filed. There is a concept that needs to be applied in these cases - that of equal treatment under the laws. In the whole abortion argument this is totally ignored.
Why aren't the anti-abortion militants insisting on measures that will diminish unwanted pregnancies,i.e. sponsor free vasectomies, publish the names of men that are responsible as determined by DNA and making them pay the medical costs or sign a contract to take the child and raise it if the couple do not wish to have a marriage or any relationship at all. Men are given a pass on responsibility.
That is shameful and there needs to a kleig light shining on this delinquent area of attention when the flames of abortion are fanned by the fanatics. Now there will be no one in the court to follow this road to make abortions more rare.
You shall be missed, Sandra, especially by those of your gender.
