Thanks for linking it young fella! 'Twas an interesting read.
Methinks the most telling statement from this story was "
on the streets of Tikrit, the soldiers say, they have to depend on instinct and "situational awareness" and can't lose time worrying about their critics in Iraq or at home". 'Twould seem those whose butt is actually on the line have a more realistic view than their critics sitting here in nice safe surroundings and hiding behind the anonymity of the internet, eh?
Fly, You’ve been there seen that, soldiers in the field almost never have the luxury of timely concern, It’s my job and anyone else’s who is concerned about America and her future, to fight for what is right in this war, right for our troops as well as what is right for both the American people and the Iraqi people. We have learned many times over that our government needs continual oversight, and many of the American people are in hopes that veterans like us will make some noise if wee see things going poorly.
You are right, the soldiers on the ground have a different perspective on the war as a whole. What they do not have is the perspective of seeing the whole picture from the top down including the geo political perspective as we do here. I'm sure you’ll agree that from the soldiers perspective they don’t see the way we do, they are duty bound and so involved they don’t have the time nor the inclination to question the reasoning for their most recent orders, the intel or much less this war in general.
I find you comment disingenuous, of course with their butts on the line they have a more realistic view of combat, but that doesn’t come close to addressing the reasoning for the war, (we now know the intel was bogus) or the lack of support from the American people, which is waning fast.
When it was your turn, you too could address the perspective of combat, but how often did you concern yourself with the discussions about your war on collage campuses, or in the halls of congress, or down at the local café. So I can’t agree with your comment, these fine soldiers are not going to be a good resource as to the validity of the US’s actions in the middle east.
