Red Lake kids head to Gathering of Nations
Friday, April 29, 2005

The outgoing Miss Indian World is bringing 40 preschool kids from the Red Lake Reservation to the 22nd annual Gathering of Nations powwow.

Delana Smith is a member of the Red Lake Nation. She is a preschool teacher at the school complex where the March 21, 2005, shootings occurred.

Smith will appear with the kids during her final dance as Miss Indian World on Saturday night. Other people from the reservation are also attending, said an organizer.

Organizers plan to acknowledge the Red Lake tragedy during the three-day event, which begins today in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

This is just too bizarre to be real, Shawnee, ....So I'm driving back from class today (just now), thinking "I'm gonna post a 'cyberprayer'...for Frank. You know who Frank is. wink.gif And I already had my prayer picked out and ready to go...then voila! I come back and there's a thread for it. Hope I'm not going too far in mixing medicine here, but...one of the problems I was having was: Hmmm. Under WHAT topic should I post my prayer? Well here it is...sorry I didn't write it myself, but I just got to thinking about Frank and his sis as I was listening to this on the way home

*** (you know what those three astericks stand for)....

"This is one of my favourite songs, not only because it's a gas to sing it, but also because it's about the incredible energy of our contemporary Indian people. Because of what our ancestors went through for us. I sing it for all our generations past, and all our generations yet to come."

(that's a buffy quote. hadn't seen that til just now either...but fits the bill ....)

Starwalker he’s a friend of mine
You’ve seen him looking fine he’s a
straight talker
he’s a Starwalker don't drink no wine
ay way hey o heya

Wolf Rider she’s a friend of yours
You’ve seen her opening doors
She’s a history turner
she’s a sweetgrass burner and a
dog soldier
ay hey way hey way heya

Holy light guard the night
Pray up your medicine song oh
straight dealer you’re a spirit healer
keep going on
ay hey way hey way heya

Lightning Woman Thunderchild
Star soldiers one and all oh
Sisters, Brothers all together
Aim straight Stand tall
Starwalker he’s a friend of mine
You’ve seen him looking fine he’s a
straight talker
He’s a Starwalker don't drink no wine
ay way hey o hey...

Indianhead
In New York City, a few blocks from Wall Street, a plaque inside the grand National Museum of the American Indian says simply, "We are still here." On the Crow Reservation, Pretty-On-Top, the cultural affairs director, makes the same point.

"We have great survival skills," he said. "We will weather this storm because we have weathered everything else. All we want is our own little spot in the sun."

Bill Miller
» The Art Of Survival
He makes his way through the heart of the night,
With all he owns in a pack
Those childhood ways disappeared in the struggle,
And it don't look like they're coming back
His heart is pounding like a drum in a cayon,
Givin' him courage and fear
He'll walk the footsteps of a man for the first time
While he's holding back the boys tears
Hungry and cold, so young and so old
There's so much that he doesn't know
But the voice that's inside him
Keeps telling him mile after mile
You're learning the art of survival
He eyes the lights of an ageless horizon,
Rising up from the sand
He aches for something to believe in and guide him
Out across this no man's land
Bridges behind him are burning to ashes
There's no way that he can turn back
But that voice that's inside him keeps telling him mile after mile
It's all in the art of survival
Dreams burn like wildfire
He feels the warmth in his bones
Faces of loved ones
Place like he's never known
Bridges behind him are burning to ashes
There's no way that he can turn back
But that voice that's inside him keeps telling him mile after mile
This is all in the art of survival
