Karl Rove brought out their secret weapon again yesterday to boost Bush's popularity in the polls: Laura Bush. She has higher approval ratings than her husband.
At Saturday's WH Correspondent's dinner (see video at http://www.c-span.org, Bush started his comedy routine then Laura interrupted him and gave "her" comedy routine. The speech was already at the podium, but they gave the impression to the media and celebrity attendees that Laura hadn't planned this "takeover" of Bush's "lame" speech. She even said that George didn't know what she would say next.
[Give me a break. The WH has tons of speech writers and both GW and Laura practice their speeches.]
On Thursday at his prime time press conference, Bush distanced himself from the religious right with his answer about the judicial nominees - his opponents are not discriminating on faith.
Last night, Laura made fun of George (to make him more human, and likeable), and made fun of Lynn Cheney. Lynn has been the "moral" cop in education and patriotic issues.
Laura said that George went to bed at 9 PM. For fun, the women of the administration: Lynn, Condi, Karen Hughes and Laura all went to a Chippendales dance bar and Lynn put money in one dancer's pants/underwear.
Laura also said she watched Desperate Housewives (the # 1 TV show) while George slept and she said she was a desperate housewife. She also made fun of George's mother and the Bush family.
The right wing religious groups don't like Desperate Housewives and don't like male dance clubs and they do think that democrats are discriminating against people of faith.
What's going on here? Is Bush dropping the Christian right?
It looks like Rove is trying to win back independents. Note that recent polls show that Bush has lost almost all democrats and most independents. His job approval ratings are at 44-48%.
The media at the dinner lapped up Laura's jokes and news programs played it up today. Rove got what he wished for - good press for a change.
