The buzz: Schwarzenegger trips over own red tape
A weekly roundup of odds and ends from the Capitol
Monday, May 9, 2005
There was a time when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the king of political staging, whether it was wielding a broom to sweep out the special interests at the Capitol or smashing a car with a sledgehammer to demonstrate Republicans' frustration with the car tax. But his showmanship lately seems to need a little help.
Schwarzenegger tried another media stunt last week when he visited Elk Grove and laid down red tape between two neighbors to show the absurdity of the state's political district lines.
During the event, Schwarzenegger lifted up the tape between the Darms and Denney households on Grand Point Lane.
"This is what we do when we do reform," he said. Perhaps he should start by reforming his district maps.
It seems that Schwarzenegger's staff picked the wrong neighborhood, however, as the two Grand Point Lane neighbors actually have the same assemblyman, Republican Guy Houston. Schwarzenegger's office blamed the mistake on bad maps provided by the Democrat-run Assembly. Too bad that can't blame Clinton for this blunder.
Steve Maviglio, a spokesman for Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, D-Los Angeles, replied, "Once again, the governor is more interested in a photo op than being honest with the voters."
