This list is associated to the Language in the New Capitalism web-site. The site is a resource for anyone interested in the language of contemporary capitalism, and the links between economic, social and linguistic change in the contemporary world. The site was establihed by an international network of people who are concerned with these issues, particularly with the spread of neoliberal ideologies.

We hope that various groups of people will use and contribute to the web-site, including researchers doing analysis of language; activists in social movements who see language as part of their concerns; journalists concerned with language, rhetoric, and spin; social researchers in other fields where language is an issue; and creative writers, who have always been a force for social change.

Our concern with language is both analytical and critical: a better understanding of how language figures in the new capitalism is part of a better understanding of new capitalism, but also increases our capacity to question and critique it, and, most of all to change it for the better.

The LNC group is largely virtual, which is to say most of the members have never met each other. There are LNC members from every culture, religion and nationality on earth. We share an interest in the language and meaning of contemporary capitalism, and the links between economic, social and linguistic change in the contemporary world. The site was set up by an international network of people who are concerned with these issues, particularly with the spread of neoliberal ideologies. This website is a resource for anyone interested in the language of contemporary capitalism, and the links between economic, social and linguistic change in the contemporary world.

Here you can post working papers, related links, drafts or documents you  wish to share with other group members and you can also read what other people  have made available. To engage in a conversation about these issues, you can  join the LNC listserv.

The idea for the group is Norman Fairclough's. The site was first built in 2000 by Joan Pujolar and has been maintained by Phil Graham. It is currently maintained by Kandace Nuckolls. There is no formal organisation, no formal body, all work is done on a voluntary basis and all responsibility for the content of papers posted on the site lies with the individuals who have submitted them.

And this Kandace Nuckolls currently maintains the site ?

"Hi there. I am a member of the design community and a M.A. TESOL candidate at Portland State University. I first came to this site while looking for answers to many questions that I couldn't seem to answer on my own. I'm not sure anyone really knows the answers; here, I have found many people with more questions and the willingness to dialog honestly about the world. I'd like to be a part of a community of people who are interested in and concerned about the way words and ideas are converted into ideologies these days. I believe in the importance of this and many other online communities. As the more corporately owned media's continue to fail as a source of truth, communities are increasingly valuable as a source of sharing ideas and information. I'd like to do what I can to add to the site as you and I have ideas. If you think of a way that this site and/or listserv might evolve, please get hold of me."
