This list is associated to the Language in the New Capitalism web-site. The site is a resource for anyone interested in the language of contemporary capitalism, and the links between economic, social and linguistic change in the contemporary world. The site was establihed by an international network of people who are concerned with these issues, particularly with the spread of neoliberal ideologies.

We hope that various groups of people will use and contribute to the web-site, including researchers doing analysis of language; activists in social movements who see language as part of their concerns; journalists concerned with language, rhetoric, and spin; social researchers in other fields where language is an issue; and creative writers,who have always been a force for social change.

Our concern with language is both analytical and critical: a better understanding of how language figures in the new capitalism is part of a better understanding of new capitalism, but also increases our capacity to question and critique it, and, most of all to change it for the better.

The idea for the group is Norman Fairclough's. The site was first built in 2000 by Joan Pujolar and has been maintained by Phil Graham. It is currently maintained by Kandace Nuckolls.There is no formal organisation, no formal body, all work is done on a voluntary basis and all responsibility for the content of papers posted on the site lies with the individuals who have submitted them.
