QUOTE(Livyjr @ Jun 11 2005, 04:43 PM) *
All things happen in life in the order that they will happen, and so .....

As for me, one brief moment back in 1969 was to change my life forever, when the warhead of an RPG-7 rocket grenade exploded right behind my head, and so ....

And so, I was to learn a whole lot about OUR alleged and supposed "system of health care", over here, and early on, I came to the conclusion that if I was to depend on that "system" in any way, it would be to my detriment, because I found it to be totally undependable, unless you want a load of pills, and well, it sure does have a lot of those, BUT ......

A doctor who I did trust told me point blank that if I started on pills way back then, well, it was going to be a long way down after I took the first one, and it would not be pleasant ......

So what to do, then?

What to do, indeed!

Turn inwards, perhaps?

Utilize the power of the mind?

And how?

How do you find out how to do that?

When you live out in the country, as I did, and still do, how do you learn to cope with being a disabled combat veteran, when nobody around "has what you got", and there are no books on the subject?

And first of all, how do you get past the aversions of the "perfect people" over here who are so squeamish about people with head wounds, or mocking, which is much more common, I have found, anyway?

Well, the answer that I found is that you go around these people, and you go around obstacles, and you find a way!

Or you suffer, and then you die!

Yes, that's right!

Harsh, but true!

And so .....

Now, of course, it is years later, and well, I can do things that I could not do in my forties, and I am still here, and vertical, which is where it all starts, for me anyway, and the "vehicle" by which much of that has happened is an ancient Chinese art called "t'ai chi", which over the years, I have been lucky to learn a considerable amount about, thanks to the "universe", I guess, and its kindness towards people like me, who have been harmed by life, but wish to keep living it, despite that.

And so, as an alternative to all these other threads in here, which describe a world that is very threatening to me, as an older person, since I don't have the "reserves" that a younger stronger person has, naturally, what I want to do in this thread is to take some time and describe my own "journey" in the world of "natural healing", as it were, in the hopes of clarifying both t'ai chi, and chi gong, to an American audience that can benefit greatly from this ancient art, which is firmly grounded in science, as well, and acute knowledge of how the human body can function, when in sync with the power of the mind, and that is a possibility that must be "actualized", because it is latent, until activated, and that is what the teaching methods of t'ai chi are really all about, which is something that I now understand, and appreciate, and can relate, after some thirty years of study on this subject, to not only keep myself alive, but with quality of life, as well.

To be continued .....

And here we are, right now today, at this very moment in time ......

And above here, one above the other, separated by almost two years in time, are my last post from May 21, 2007, and my first post from June 11, 2005, and to me, they are like a ring!

Where is the beginning?

And where is the end?

Which came before the other?

And for anyone just stopping by here ....

Wondering what is going on in here ....

The answer from me would be, "just thoughts", is all ....

A "stream of consciousness", I suppose it could be called ....

A "flow" that I personally have been a part of for as long as I can remember ....

And I am over sixty years now, this year, and still thinking these thoughts on a daily basis ....

Which brings me to a response that I just received from my good friend TaiChiLady, which response itself was spurred by the words of this last series of posts in here by myself:

Mushin means "no-mindedness" or "empty mind."

Mushin as a practice enables the body to react without the distraction of thinking about the reaction.

Mushin does not dull the mind from 'empty-headedness', it is more a conscious removal process for distracting thought as a prelude to action.

The way I've always thought of mushin is as the ability to filter all the background out and focus on things that affect you and calmly deal with it ....

It's interesting .....

To me, anyway .....

How the "flow" goes in here .....

When I post ...

I post what has come to me, at that moment in time ....

What "comes to hand", I suppose you would say ....

And this above post takes me all the way back to 1970, when I was just returning to here from Viet Nam as a disabled veteran who had been wounded in the back of the head and neck by the exploding warhead of an RPG-7 anti-tank grenade which left me with two fragments of metal lodged near my spine in my neck ....

Back then, my posture was quite lousy ....

My spine was not straight because of how I was wounded ....

So that meditation as a means of dealing with my pain was not effective because I did not have good posture .....

A seemingly vicious circle that I had to find some way to break out of .....

Or I was not going to get old to have to worry about it .....

Which then brings us to here, in an unbroken chain of events for me, anyway ....

Thirty-eight years later ....

Where thanks to mental calmness and t'ai chi and chi gong .....

I am still going strong ....

With better posture than I had back then, when I was younger, but less "aware" than I now am of the power of the mind ...

Which is what this thread is all about .....

Not me ....

QUOTE(Livyjr @ Jun 11 2005, 05:04 PM) *
Ling!

Shen!

Xin, and Yi!

And the five "regulatings".

That is where we will start, for that is where the "power" flows from, and the "five regulatings" are the key to "unlocking" that power, which is considerable, indeed.

LING - simply, light and airy; nothing more, nothing less!

Of course, to be LING, what must you do with worry?

SHEN - the Spirit of Vitality!

To be vital!

SO?

What does that mean, then?

XIN - the "emotion" mind, or the "monkey", by way of visualization.

YI - the "wisdom" mind, or the "mountain", which is visualized as a horse.

We are born with both, and both are necessary to life, especially the "emotion" mind, which is linked in the chi gong "system" with body movement, itself, and hence, the life of the "physical" self, or the body, which brings us to the "five regulatings", the "heart of the system", as I now know it:

First, regulate the body;

Then, the breath;

Then, the mind;

Then chi; and

Finally, the spirit!

Which brings us back to Shen!

To be continued ......

And to take this back to the beginning of this thread one more time .....

The essence of what we are talking about in this thread is contained right above here, in these words about Ling and Shen, Xin, and Yi, and the five "regulatings", which constitutes the "backbone", if you will, of the "method" that we are studying in here, or contemplating, or discussing in connection with the physical practice of what is known in America as t'ai chi ch'aun!

So when Chogyam Trungpa talks above here about sitting or standing "ERECT", he is really talking about your SHEN manifesting itself in your physical being ....

And by practicing whatever it is that you practice with the "FIVE REGULATINGS" always in the back of your mind, you are on the path to bringing SHEN into all aspects of your own life ....

Which is both good and necessary for the enhancement of your own abilities, and it serves to improve the quality of your life .....

At no real cost to yourself .....

Other than losing "slouchiness" .....

Both mental and physical .....

"Cancer expected to skyrocket in Asia"

By MARGIE MASON, Associated Press

Last updated: 1:56 a.m., Thursday, May 31, 2007

SINGAPORE -- Asia is bracing for a dramatic surge in cancer rates over the next decade as people in the developing world live longer and adopt bad Western habits that greatly increase the risk of the disease.

Smoking, drinking and eating unhealthy foods -- all linked to various cancers -- will combine with larger populations and fewer deaths from infectious diseases to drive Asian cancer rates up 60 percent by 2020, some experts predict.

But unlike in wealthy countries where the world's top medical care is found, there will likely be no prevention or treatment for many living in poor countries.

"What happened in the Western world in the '60s or '70s will happen here in the next 10 to 20 years as life expectancy gets longer and we get better control on more common causes of deaths," said Dr. Jatin P. Shah, a professor of surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, who attended a cancer conference last month in Singapore.

"The habit of alcohol consumption, smoking and dietary changes will increase the risk of Western world cancers to the Eastern world," Shah said.

An estimated 40 percent of cancers worldwide can be prevented by exercise, eating healthy foods and not using tobacco, according to the World Health Organization.

But more people in Asia are moving into cities and becoming overweight and obese from inactivity.

They are replacing fruits and vegetables with fatty meals full of meat and salt, which is leading to increases in stomach and colon cancers.

Meanwhile, traditional diseases like malaria are killing fewer people -- building an aging population that's a prime target for cancer.

The effect is already startling, with the Asia-Pacific making up about half of the world's cancer deaths and logging 4.9 million new cases, or 45 percent, of the global toll in 2002.

That number is projected to leap to 7.8 million by 2020 if nothing changes, according to Dr. Donald Max Parkin, a research fellow at the University of Oxford who is a leading authority on global cancer patterns and trends.

China alone, with its booming economy and 1.3 billion people, is home to about one-fifth of the world's new cases, compared to about 13 percent in the U.S. and 26 percent in Europe, Parkin said.

Heart disease remains the top killer in China, but cancer is a close second.

Cancer deaths are slowly dropping in the United States, with slight declines recorded in 2003 and 2004.

A decrease in smoking, coupled with early detection and better treatment of tumors is credited with the positive results -- the first U.S. decline in cancer deaths since 1930.

Smoking is on the rise in Asia, where it's common to see people lighting up in airports, restaurants and even hospitals.

Lung cancer makes up the bulk of all cases regionwide, followed by stomach and liver cancers.

It also remains the biggest cancer killer worldwide.

"Lung cancer is the big one because of cigarette smoking."

"There are many tobacco advertisements -- everywhere," said Dr. You-Lin Qiao from the Cancer Institute and Hospital in Beijing, who added that the odds are stacked against those diagnosed in China.

"No matter if you're rich or poor, if you get lung cancer you die."

"There's no treatment at all."

While Americans and Europeans have been abandoning smoking, an estimated 300 million men are puffing away in China -- equal to the entire U.S. population.

If nothing changes, a third of Chinese men under age 30 are predicted to die from tobacco, with lung cancer already the biggest cancer killer there.

Smokeless tobacco is also a big problem in Asia's other giant, India, where many men and women chew some form of tobacco.

Mouth cancer makes up half of all new cases in parts of the country.

A lack of vaccines that prevent cancer-causing viruses is another obstacle for Asia, which is home to about three-quarters of the world's liver cancers, caused largely by Hepatitis B infections.

A vaccine guarding against the virus has been available since the early 1980s and is routinely given to children in Western countries, but it is still not reaching large swaths of the Asia-Pacific.

Some experts worry it could take years before the new vaccine for the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, or HPV, is available to women in developing countries.

The three shots currently cost about $350 in the U.S. and are 70 percent effective against preventing HPV, the main cause of cervical cancer.

It is already the No. 2 cause of cancer among women in Asia, after breast cancer.

"The problem is so huge that it's very difficult for us to know where to start," said Dr. Franco Cavalli, president of the nonprofit International Union Against Cancer.

"All the new cancer treatments are so expensive, that already in the affluent countries we are not able to pay for them."

"... So imagine what that means for low-income countries where you have $20 a year per person for health expenditures."

Regular screening, such as Pap smears and mammograms, is too costly for many poor countries.

Treatment with radiation or chemotherapy is unfathomable for most.

And in Asia, many patients seek help from hospitals in the late stages of disease after traditional medicine has failed to cure them.

Monika Bardhan of Malaysia's NCI Cancer Hospital has seen a dramatic increase in cancer patients over the past four years.

"It's staggering."

"Every day I see a patient with breast cancer -- I just hold my own and say a prayer."

QUOTE(Livyjr @ Jul 24 2005, 07:54 AM) *
A few years ago now, I had a board on a scaffold give away as I was crossing over it, and in the resultant fall, to save myself, I ended up severly wrenching and twisting my spine, which wiped out a disc in my lumbar spine, and things rapidly deteriorated from there, with the result that I couldn't use my right leg, at all, and in fact, couldn't walk!

I was brought to the hospital in a wheelchair for an MRI, and when the MRI was done, a team of doctors told me I had to have immediate surgery, or I would never walk again.

My greater fear, of course, was that if I did have surgery, I would never walk again, and so, I told them I wanted to think about it for a bit.

When I saw the MRI, and the damage, I almost swooned on the spot, but something inside calmed me down, and so, I very carefully studied the MRI myself, to note what the damage was, but more importantly, WHERE and HOW the damage was, which is where the healing has to start, if there is to be any!

That night, I was able, by focusing on the picture of the damage in the MRI, to relax myself sufficiently, to get beyond the pain, sufficiently, so as to self-manipulate my spine, to get things back where they belonged, and when I did that, which involved putting "vectored force" on my lumbar spine through my abdominal cavity with my fingertips, and using "breath" to "inflate" my abdominal cavity, and so, take "strain" off the lumbar spine, I was able to have things gently slide back into place, and the difference was like night and day.

I was able to get up and walk, however weakly, because muscle in my leg had melted like candlewax from the nerve damage, and so the next day, when I had to go back to the hospital, I was walking, and as I approached the one doctor, he was incredulous, to the point to thinking that I was going to kill myself, or something, by being "macho", and walking with a damaged spine, when the MRI clearly said that I was in grave trouble!

"That was yesterday", I told him, and then I explained what had transpired since viewing the MRI the day before, and he was totally unbelieving to the point of getting quite huffy with me, telling me that I could believe that "psychological mumbo-jumbo" if I wished, but that if I was going to persist, he would not have a further thing to do with me, nor would he let the hospital be liable for my "stupidity" in not following a doctor's orders, and with that, he walked out of the examining room.

Now, as it was, there was a Russian doctor in the room who had been a doctor in Russia, but to be certified here in America, had to undergo some period of supervision in an American hospital, under an American doctor, and when the American doctor stormed out, we sat there a minute, in an embarassed silence, I think, on the part of the Russian doctor, who finally said, in a soft voice, "In Russia, we know that what you did is possible, of course, but medicine in America cannot accept these things, because they are not repeatable, nor are they predictable, and since they are dependant upon the strength of the will of the person who can self-heal, well, these techniques are just of no value to medicine, which wants cures for the masses, when they cannot effect the cures themselves."

And we talked for a bit about this, how, if I had not had my experiences with being wounded in Viet Nam, where I was left for dead for some three or more hours, and had I not already been seriously studying and practicing chi gong, for mind control, that in the midst of my pain, and the panic induced by the extent of the damage to my spine, that in all likelihood, I would not have been able to muster up the state of calmness and acute mental clarity and single-purposeness needed to accomplish that "self-manipulation", and I believe that what he was saying is so!

When you have never been in water before, and you never cared about learning to swim, suddenly finding yourself over your head in deep water and drowning, is a tough time to have to learn, but that is the way of life, isn't it?

Why bother with learning to swim when the nearest water is a thousand miles away, and you have no intentions of leaving home, anytime soon, to get to where it is?

And thanks to my good friend TaiChilady for this following, which is presented here for your edification and consideration, although, as this previous post above illustrates, I myself believe in a somewhat different "path", based upon my own 30+ years of dealing with the chronic pain of war wounds suffered in combat in Viet Nam in 1969:

Coping with Pain the Yoga Way

Physical Pain is perhaps the toughest thing to manage.

When it strikes, it seems to tear us apart completely and nothing really helps us in overcoming it.

Pain may happen due to temporary or chronic conditions; it may be short term or unfortunately, it may be long term or even permanent.

Most of our fears draw their strength from perceived pain, so it goes without saying that if we can manage pain, many of our fears would be overcome.

Conventionally, pain is managed through painkillers.

While some of the painkillers work by inhibiting the chemicals (prostaglandins) generated by the stimulus from reaching the brain, others work on a narcotic level by "dulling" the brain.

Both of these methods, while necessary as a result of our conventional lifestyles, should be recognized for their limitations:

They interfere with the natural mechanism and this can have its own repercussions that are perhaps not fully known.

Their effects are temporary and known to produce chemical side-effects.

Eventually the mind works its way around these painkillers reducing their effectiveness.

Is there any hope?

Well, yes actually.

Pain, as has been proved time and again, is really a condition of the mind.

Of course, it is our natural response to unfavorable stimulus.

But at the end of it, it is the mind which is translating the effect of stimulus into pain .

Managing pain is a tremendous challenge for mankind, primarily because man has a 'clever' mind and we haven't really figured out how to guide the mind - it is quite the other way round really.

Often, when we have a nagging pain, we can't really seem to get over it as our mind is preoccupied with a constant focus on it - the region of the pain and the pain itself.

Nothing seems to help.

The more we try to tell the mind NOT to think of it, the more it dwells upon it.

In such a situation, if we are fortunate to experience a diversion - something that "captures" our mind or is of truly a greater interest to our mind, we find that the pain is forgotten by the mind.

This may be just a fleeting or a temporary phenomenon, but it DOES happen and therein lies the clue for pain management.

What transpires is that if the mind can be effectively diverted or disassociated from the region of pain, we can save ourselves from much of the suffering.

But how do we do that?

The mind is such a 'guileful' creation of nature, that the more we tell it NOT to do, it does exactly the same thing with an even greater intensity.

So, never ask your mind NOT to think of pain - the result will be quite disastrous!

The best way out is to indulge the mind into pursuits that it is truly passionate about - sport, movies, a game of Bridge, whatever - something that your mind TRULY enjoys (don't try to fib the mind, it won't work).

Quite simple isn't it, till you realize that -

This depends upon external factors beyond yourself (you do need a Bridge partner after all),

It is temporary, which may provide relief but certainly not a cure.

But most importantly, these 'sense gratification' measures have their own after-effects or lingering side-effects which can be quite a handful for the poor mind in addition to the pain that it has to cope with.

So, what's the way out?

The only PERMANENT way is to tackle what is essentially a mind problem using the mind itself.

No external dependencies - we must use the SAME resources that the mind employs into rendering pain as something irrelevant.

That is where Yoga ( substitute chi gong) comes in.

Yoga, through its various mind rotation and withdrawal techniques of Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep) and associated relaxation techniques, provides a way to train the mind into effectively dissociating from the senses.

These techniques help us use the power of the mind into methods that first help us disassociate from the senses and eventually help us unshackle ourselves from the bondage of the mind itself.

That is the purpose of yoga - beyond the physical toning postures to which many have sadly restricted their understanding and practices.

It is of limited use to begin practicing these techniques when pain strikes.

Why?

Because when pain occurs, the senses have a vice like grip upon the mind - their hold is the strongest and it is often futile to train the mind under such circumstances.

That is why the practice of yoga is called "Sadhana".

It must be actively pursued when the body-mind complex is trouble free and persevered with at all times.

What happens is that eventually we perfect the techniques and are able to use the resources to manage the mind-body complex when we need it most.

So, move your yoga practice to the next level - use it for a higher meaning beyond physical fitness because as Buddha indicated through one of his Noble truths - "Pain and suffering is inevitable to mankind".

And to get the day going, let's start out with a thought exercise from TaiChiLady ....

Promoting The Positive - Negative Pull"

Sometimes we start out with the best intentions to think and speak only positive thoughts, but the people around us throw us off course.

Not everyone fully understands the power our thoughts and words have, or even if they do, they may be stuck in old patterns of negativity.

Much of our habitual communication takes the form of complaining and criticizing, and it can be hard to find a way into certain conversations without lapsing into those old habits.

However, we always have the option not to participate in negativity or to find a way to influence the situation in a positive direction.

In the right company, you may even be able to directly acknowledge the fact that things have taken a negative turn, thus freeing yourself and others from the negative pull.

Not everyone will respond to your cues, and there’s no need to become overly attached to the idea of changing other people, because people have to choose for themselves how they will be in the world.

Many people choose negativity because it is familiar to them and feels safe.

It is important to give people the space to find their own way, but you can always set an example, subtly representing the power of being positive.

At times you may interject an affirmative statement into the conversation, and at others you may simply change the subject.

You may also simply withdraw your energy and presence, which also makes a subtle statement.

If you feel comfortable enough with somebody that is always negative, perhaps you can have an honest conversation with them; after all, awareness is the first step to change.

A powerful way to free yourself from the negative pull is to enlist allies who are similarly minded.

You and a friend, coworker, or family member may agree to work together to continually shift the energy in a situation in a positive direction.

The power of two people working to promote the positive is exponentially greater than one person working on their own.

As you and your allies work together to lift the energy around you, you will be amazed to see how quickly the positive pull begins to draw people into its orbit, freeing one mind after another from negativity into light.

Fear ....

Has to be acknowledged!

Yesterday, I took a ride over across the river to see my good friend TaiChiLady and another good friend from the t'ai chi school over there ....

And as always, we got to chatting about where we have all gotten to in our lives since last year, when I last saw these people, since I don't make the trip into the city very often anymore, for a variety of reasons, one of which being that I just do not like to trade the peace and quiet of the countryside where I am for what I have to encounter on the drive into the city, where life moves at a much different pace than what I choose to move at ....

And we were talking about the post above that TaiChiLady had sent me the other day ....

And this thing of using the mind to fight illness and injury to the body ....

Especially since one of our friends from t'ai chi has been battling cancer for a long time now, and has had a set-back of sorts ....

And we talked about being distracted by doctors, and tests, and treatments, and such .....

Or at least I did, from my own perspective of having been dealing with the consequences of having been severely wounded in the back of the head and neck in Viet Nam back in 1969, which has given me a lot of time to ponder this equation of life and quality of life and chronic pain, and such ....

Which brings us back to why I started this thread in the first place, and why I take the time each day to keep it running ....

Fear is the mind-killer ....

And uncertainty is its hand-maiden ....

Uncertainty weakens you ....

And fear keeps you from moving forward ....

Stay uncertain long enough, and remain fearful long enough, and soon enough, you won't have a thing to worry about .....

Since you will no longer have a "you" to have to worry about .....

And that is the way it goes, or can go, for all of us ....

Why fear "fear"?

Why be afraid of "being afraid"?

Thoughts to think about, this fine morning ....

And so ....

"Muscle cream caused NYC teen's death"

Sat Jun 9, 7:07 PM ET

NEW YORK - A medical examiner blamed a 17-year-old track star's death on the use of too much anti-inflammatory muscle cream, the kind used to soothe aching legs after exercise.

Arielle Newman, a cross-country runner at Notre Dame Academy on Staten Island, died after her body absorbed high levels of methyl salicylate, an anti-inflammatory found in sports creams such as Bengay and Icy Hot, the New York City medical examiner said Friday.

The medical examiner's spokeswoman, Ellen Borakove, said the teen used "topical medication to excess."

She said it was the first time that her office had reported a death from using a sports cream.

In addition to spreading the muscle cream on her legs between track meets, Newman was using adhesive pads containing the anti-inflammatory, plus an unspecified third product containing the chemical, Borakove said.

The products were used and the chemical absorbed over time, she said.

Newman, who garnered numerous track awards, died April 3.

She had gone to a party the night before, then returned home and spent hours talking with her mother.

Methyl salicylate poisoning is unusual, and deaths from high levels of the chemical are rare.

"Chronic use is more dangerous than one-time use," Edward Arsura, chairman of medicine at Richmond University Medical Center, told the Staten Island Advance on Friday.

"Exercise and heat can accentuate absorption."

Dr. Ronald Grelsamer, of Mount Sinai Medical Center, said Newman had a very abnormal amount of methyl salicylate in her body.

"She either lathered herself with it, or used way too much, or she used a normal amount and an abnormal percentage was absorbed into her body," he said.

Her mother, Alice Newman, said she still couldn't believe her daughter's death was caused by a sports cream.

"I am scrupulous about my children's health," she told the Advance.

"I did not think an over-the-counter product could be unsafe."

Johnson & Johnson, the makers of Bengay, expressed sympathy for the family and reminded consumers about "the importance of reading the label on this and all over-the-counter medicines to ensure safe and proper use," in a statement released Saturday.

The label on Ultra Strength Bengay says the product should be applied no more than three or four times daily and consumers should stop and see a doctor if the condition worsens or symptoms persist for more than a week, spokeswoman Meghan Marschall said.

I have to say that I find Chogyam Trungpa to be an interesting individual, even though he is "dead" to this earth back in 1986 at the relatively young age of 48 .....

He was born in Tibet, a place far, far removed from where I am, in 1939, seven years before I myself was born ....

And in 1959, when I was getting ready to attend the ninth grade of high school over here, Chogyam Trungpa was fleeing Tibet for India, as Tibet was being invaded by China at that time ....

Ten years before I myself would be heading some ten thousand miles from here over to Viet Nam ....

As one of the many "invaders" of that country during our war with the people of Viet Nam ....

How I came across Chogyam Trungpa, I cannot really say ....

Just one day, I found one of his books in my hand, and after reading through that book, I got all of what he wrote, and read them all ....

Which brings us to right now, today ....

An unbroken chain of thought .....

As I think about Chogyam Trungpa, my thought is that he was one of those people who are born to carry forth a message from back in time to the rest of us for us to consider in our more "modern" age, which oftentimes means "weaker" and "less knowledgeable" and "less informed" ....

And they are only here for a bit ....

And then they are gone ....

But thankfully, their words live on ....

And to me, anyway, those words form the basis for a lot of the thoughts that I have now, at this stage of my life ....

Thirty-seven years after returning to this country myself as a disabled combat veteran from the Viet Nam war ....

In his writings, Chogyam Trungpa speaks to a warrior tradition from Tibet that goes back and back in time, further back than Siddartha, the Buddha, who was himself a prince from Nepal ....

And one of the hardest things for a "warrior", perhaps, is to find peace in a turbulent and tumultuous world ....

And Chogyam Trungpa speaks on this, to me, at least .....

And over time, I have found some comfort and solace in his words, although he is the first to say, "YOU HAVE GOT TO WALK THE ROAD BY YOURSELF" ....

And maybe that really is the necessary message to keep having to hear, over and over and over again ....

Which is one of the reasons that I keep this thread going ....

So I can say it to myself, in the morning ....

And again in the evening ....

Several years ago, I participated in a demonstration of t'ai chi in a TV studio that was the subject of a snippet on the local TV news on t'ai chi ....

And when I watched the segment afterwards, it mainly featured the TV person talking to another individual about t'ai chi, while we were shown in the background doing t'ai chi ...

And the thing that caught my attention from that TV news broadcast was a question that the TV announcer asked this person while the demonstration was going on:

TV PERSON: "What is going on in their minds right now?"

T'AI CHI COMMENTATOR: "Probably nothing!"

HUH?

That was my thought, anyway, when I heard those words being spoken on this TV news segment ....

And why on earth would this person say something like that to the public, was my thought then, and now ....

"Oh, when you do t'ai chi, you are empty-headed ....."

OKAY ....

But that is not really true, is my thought, after being involved with t'ai chi and people attempting to learn t'ai chi over these last so many years, and when the TV news is putting forth that "proposition" that you are thinking "nothing" when you are doing t'ai chi, they are doing people a big disservice ....

But you cannot argue with the TV news ....

You can only hope to counter the mis-information that they put forth to the public ....

And so, I have this thread running in here, to illustrate some of what at least one person is thinking about in relation to t'ai chi and chi gong, as a "practitioner" ....

MIND-BODY CONNECTION ....

If you are "thinking nothing" while doing t'ai chi, where then is your mind?

Body is matter ....

Mind is energy ....

For there to be a MIND-BODY connection ....

There must be a mind, first ....

For there to be a "mind" to connect to the body, there must be a means of recognition and communication between them ....

Which brings us to "CHI" ....

Which brings us right back to the very beginnings of this thread ....

Which then brings us forward in time to where we are in here, right exactly now ....

"Bengay Death Highlights OTC Dangers"

By E.J. Mundell, HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, June 15 (HealthDay News) -- The bizarre death of a New York City high school track star from a muscle pain cream overdose is raising a red flag once again on the hazards of overusing common over-the-counter medications, experts say.

The New York City medical examiner's office ruled last week that 17-year-old cross-country runner Arielle Newman died from an accidental overdose of methyl salicylate, the wintergreen-scented ingredient found in popular sports balms.

To help ease exercise-related discomfort, the Staten Island teenager reportedly had been putting Bengay on her legs between running meets, while also using adhesive pads with methyl salicylate, an aspirin-like anti-inflammatory, and a third product, according to the Associated Press.

"There were multiple products, used to great excess," Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the NYC medical examiner's office, told the AP.

All of the products can be found as nonprescription items on drug store shelves.

But over-the-counter almost never means "harmless," experts warned.

Methyl salicylate, or salicylic acid, is the active ingredient in creams such as Bengay, Icy Hot and Tiger Balm, as well as aspirin, and "is potentially harmful if it is overused," said Dr. Gerard Varlotta, the director of sport rehabilitation at Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine in New York City.

An anti-clotting agent, salicyclic acid at very high doses "can cause internal bleeding, it can cause arrhythmias of the heart, it can cause problems in the liver -- there are any number of ways it can get to you," Varlotta added.

However, long-familiar brands like Bengay (which first debuted in U.S. drug stores more than 100 years ago) don't set off alarm bells in most Americans' minds, so the temptation to overuse them is there, Varlotta said.

And while most people would definitely think twice about swallowing a fistful of aspirin or other OTC pills, people forget that creams carry dangers, too.

"Remember, there are a whole variety of [medicinal] products that are specifically formulated to be absorbed through the skin," Varlotta said.

As with any drug, moderation is key, another expert added.

"You have to follow the directions, because the poison is in the dose," advised Elena Juris, an education outreach specialist at the American Association of Poison Control Centers in Washington, D.C.

And that maxim applies to creams just as much as it does to pills, she said.

Her groups' statistics for 2005 show that 14 Americans died from skin exposures to some kind of toxic substance, although a breakdown on exactly which substances caused those deaths has not yet been compiled, Juris said.

However, she noted that, "the seventh most common substances involved in human exposures from poisoning are, in fact, topical preparations."

"In 2005, poison control centers reported 109,831 exposures related to topical substances."

Newman's Bengay-linked death was an extremely rare occurrence, however, and Johnson & Johnson, which makes the cream, told AP that their product "is safe and effective when used as directed to provide relief from minor arthritis pain, sore, aching and strained muscles and backaches."

Similar to advice given for prescription drugs, it's crucial that consumers carefully read label instructions and warnings for all OTC products.

Varlotta believes that the cautions could be better highlighted, however.

"If you look at all of these [OTC] products, you cannot tell anything from the outside of the box," he said.

In the case of the Bengay that Newman used, "there's nothing in big letters that says that it contains aspirin," Varlotta said.

"It's in the fine print."

Many consumers also fail to realize that the same drug can pop up in multiple, and very different, OTC products.

"Cough and cold preparations are a common mistake," Juris said.

"You might be taking a cold preparation that includes acetaminophen, and you also take acetaminophen [pills] for headache."

"So, you are overdosing it right there."

"So, it's not just looking at the label for directions, it's also making sure that you are not combining products and increasing the recommended dosage."

Other OTC products on Varlotta's radar include the painkillers Advil or Motrin (two or three OTC pills equal the dose in one prescription-strength pill, he noted), a host of poorly regulated herbals and dietary supplements, and Voltaren, an anti-inflammatory muscle cream that many of his patients bring back with them from Europe.

Voltaren isn't approved for OTC sale in the United States, Varlotta said, but it can cause real problems for Americans who bring it home.

"People come back, and they are given a prescription by their doctor for another anti-inflammatory, so that means they're now using the cream plus the anti-inflammatory, and they end up getting gastrointestinal problems, bleeding," he said.

"And then I tell them: 'Let me see the cream.'"

"And sure enough, it's Voltaren or some other cream they've brought back."

The bottom line, according to the experts, is that every drug -- even a nonprescription cream -- comes with some level of risk.

"Just because it's OTC doesn't mean that it's entirely safe and that it can be used against the directions that are being set out by the makers," Varlotta said.

"People should know what they are taking, both orally and on their skin."
