Violent Protests Over Gaza Plans CBS News
Jewish settlers got militant Wednesday over Israel's plans to pull out of the Gaza Strip in two months, both inside and outside Israel. Soldiers fired into the air to stop a clash between settlers and Palestinian residents at an outpost on the outskirts of the Shirat Hayam settlement. The clash broke out shortly after Israeli soldiers forcibly removed about 20 settlers who had holed up in the outpost — an abandoned Palestinian home. Settlers and Palestinians threw stones at one another, wounding at least three people, witnesses said. Earlier, during morning rush hour, right-wing Israelis opposed to the Gaza pullout scattered nails and oil across a main highway during morning rush hour, crippling traffic, reports CBS News Correspondent Robert Berger.

Senate OKs bipartisan energy bill Seattle Times
The Senate yesterday overwhelmingly approved an energy bill that would provide tax breaks and incentives to encourage domestic oil and natural-gas production but billions more to boost renewable energy sources, nuclear power and conservation. After years of partisan bickering over energy policy, the Senate struck a bipartisan deal that would benefit the oil industry and begin to address the concerns of Democrats and environmentalists that more needs to be done to conserve energy and develop cleaner energy alternatives. For the first time, the Senate went on record calling for mandatory limits on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse-gas emissions linked to global warming, although the resolution is not binding on the Bush administration, which opposes mandatory controls.

Senate panel approves Cafta trade pact MarketWatch
The Senate Finance Committee put its stamp of approval on the Central America Free Trade Agreement Wednesday, an important symbolic victory for President Bush as he presses for congressional passage of the controversial trade pact. The Senate panel, by voice vote, "favorably recommended" legislation that would implement the trade pact with the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica and Guatemala. The move, which clears the way for a full Senate vote as early as this week, came despite the lack of a final deal designed to assuage the sugar industry's concerns that the pact will result in a significant spike in U.S. sugar imports.

Lowering Odds Of A Shark Attack BS News
Two shark attacks in three days off the Florida Panhandle, one of them fatal, have prompted concern among beachgoers all over. But George Burgess, director of the International Shark Attack File of the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida in Gainesville, says the two incidents were "only related in that they're in the same region and both involve circumstances that have some commonality." He explains to The Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith that sharks attack people for a variety of reasons: "Most are simply cases of mistaken identification, in which the shark interprets the activities of the human being, namely splashing, as being (that of) normal prey items. But there are some attacks, such as the (recent) two, that appear to be truly feeding episodes."
