Israelis Wreck Zoo, Animals Let Loose

RAFAH — The Israeli operation to end weapons smuggling in Rafah refugee camp has unleashed a new danger. An unknown number of wild cats and other dangerous animals now roam the area of the Gaza Strip where Palestinian militants trade machine gun fire with Israelis.

The neighbourhood zoo, an incongruous oasis in the overcrowded camp, was flattened by the Israeli Army. Many animals were killed or set loose as bulldozers and tanks flattened their pens.

The Israelis were accused of making off with nearly 50 valuable parrots, carefully loading them into the cabs of their vehicles, although the Israeli Army denied the charge.

As Israeli forces withdrew from several districts in Rafah yesterday after a four-day operation to search for weapons-smuggling tunnels, they left a trail of death, destroyed homes, and ruined olive groves. At least 43 Palestinians, many of them children, died.

The destruction of the zoo was just another aspect of the devastation. The silence of a tiny, wide-eyed gazelle, its back legs broken, said everything. Outside, amid mounds of sandy earth chewed up by tank tracks and bulldozer shovels, was a pile of bloodied pheasants and ducks, killed as their pens were flattened. Ostrich feathers poked out from one pile of rubble.

"Some people accuse them of behaving like animals, but I cannot say this. Animals are beautiful and would never do anything like what has been done here," said Mohammad Ahmed Juma, the owner who saw his life’s dream destroyed in a few hours’ mayhem. He had spent five years building up the zoo from nothing.

Israeli military officials said the army took the path through the zoo to avoid booby-trapped streets, and that some animals were released to avoid injury.

In the basement of Mr Juma’s home a petrified dwarf kangaroo cowered in the corner, its partner either loose or buried beneath the rubble. Six foxes and six South American jaguars suffered similar uncertain fates.
