Welllll, gee - I have "alternatives" available, so.....(2 100-lb pooches with a purpose and an attitude if the fence is breached)
Maybe the sign near the mailbox would help steer the conversation too:
"Don't worry about the dogs. Beware of the owner..."

Although I'm armed and both my wife and I are firearms trained, An intruder would have to directly threaten me or my wife's life for me to shoot. I have plenty of advanced warning with a dog both inside and out, which allow me to call the Sheriffs office. Of course...arrival times around an hour or so in my neck of the woods.

As we have two small kids in the house i would beat the "expletive deleted" out of him whit a crowbar until he stopped moving, and i would not give any warning what soever in case he has a weapon ready, i would not generaly use a firearm since bullets can be just as dangerous for my kids if i'm unlucky as to the idiot trying to break in.

If it takes you that many rounds, the intruder has nothing to worry about.

I gotta ask Mike Dukakis what his answer might be.
(this was the question that messed up his campaign.)

Having been the victim of a crime, if I had a weapon, I would certainly use it. If you don't want your A** blown away, then stay the **** out of my house!!
The only reason I don't have a weapon is because I'm afraid it will cause harm to someone non-deserving.
I also have two pooches guarding me now.

You can but if you have children you might have to reconsider using it, bullets are nasty things and quite able to destroy you life by bad luck, Conterary to Hollywood, normal plaster walls and doors does not protect you in the sligthest, neither your kids for that matter.

It's never happened to me while I was on my own. But I am my mothers' son, and when this did happen once when I was a kid, this is what happened;
We lived in a two story house in Springfield Gardens Queens NY. My Mother, Father, my Brother and I came home one evening, and as we entered the house we all heard someone upstairs. My father was a private detective and owned a .38 police special, but didn't have it with him. As he was preparing to go upstairs to confront whomever it might be, my mother charged upstairs with a ferocious expression on her face. My father had no choice but to follow. My brother and I heard my Mother roar like a tiger. Her voice became gutteral and demanded that the intruder get out! My father recounted what he saw later. He said my Mother went into a strange crouch, and advanced on the figure in the darkened bedroom, snarling that he get out! He (the intruder) apparently dared not approach my mother to get around her to go down the stairs to leave. So he backed up to the window with a terrified expression on his face, as my mother advanced on him. He actually fell out of the window, slipped on the slanted roof, and rolled off it to fall with a thud in the front yard. My brother and I saw him fall since we were still downstairs. He slowly got up and limped away very fast. We lived there for many years after this incident, and were never broken into again.

No Kids here, and my wife and I have taken courses in firearms safety..
I also spent some time jumping out of airplanes with m-16s and m-60s.
I really wish things were different but I do feel better and safer armed and ready.

We have kids so that is why i would prefer a crowbar to make my point against any eventual intruder.

I would probably say "Ok buddy, you chose the wrong house to break into" and if i saw any threatening movement then their ass is grass.

It could take a while for the sheriff's dept. to get here. I am no longer young and strong enough to do much physical fighting, or running. I will assume that anyone breaking in intends to hurt me, and will shoot as soon as the front sight lines up.

Well, I already had that happen once in Virginia. Some drunk red neck boy got confused as to which house he lived in. My wife and I were sitting in the den when we hear the front door open (it wasn't locked, we trust everyone), my wife thought the wind had blown it open so she got up to close it, she got my attention when she started shreiking, "get out, get out", I ran up the front hall where my wife is standing petrified still screaming and the fellow is walking up the hall toward her, he made a big mistake of getting petrified himself when he saw me coming (He should of turned and run) because I delivered a running kick to his groin which had he been a football would have scored a field goal from 60 yards out and I was still wearing my jump boots. The last we saw of him was him sissy running down the street. Called the police but they never found him.

If a party of one, one 357 hollow point should do the trick.
If a group, a 12 gage with 00 Buck might just work.

Nothing calms people down like a sawed off shotgun pointet at them
But it is illigal to own one in my country (Sawed off that is), but i guess law enforcement is not particulary happy about them in the US either?

18" for barrel, 26" for overall weapon length.
Anything shorter becomes a Class III AOW (any other weapon). They can be owned per BATFE regulations.

Now, living in Florida, if this guy/gal is armed and threatens me with deadly force, I can shoot first, whether in my home, car or on the street. ANYWHERE !
Stand your ground takes care of the flee 1st then fire law.
But let's hope I never have a situation arise that makes me do something I don't want to ever happen, i.e, kill or injure someone.

It depends on the invading group's mass and armament.
