Marinette County Fair

This Year's Marinette Dem booth at the County Fair was special, as we remembered the soldiers killed in the Iraq war with a Memorial. All wars are political by nature, but we put the politics aside for the weekend to simply honor the almost 1900 American Soldiers who gave their lives in the line of duty. It was moving to see the emotional reaction of the many visitors to the memorial, as the public placed over 1200 of the flags, for many their family members and friends, or simply to place a flag for somebody from their home towns across America.

On each side of the map below, are 16+ pages with 2 columns on each page, that list all the soldiers by state, then by name. It took 4 of us over 3 hours to place all the flags on the lists for people to choose from! There are more pictures HERE.

The finished memorial. In the last couple of hours of the fair, party volunteers finished filling in the flags for the remaining 600 soldiers, but the general public placed well over 1200 flags in the course of 3-1/2 days!

Most of our volunteers agreed that the most rewarding moment of the weekend, was when a soldier of the Marines 2nd Battalion from Menominee stopped by and placed a number of flags in remembrance of friends he'd worked with in Iraq who were killed serving their country. Many other people placed flags for relatives from around Wisconsin and across the county.

The most frequent comment was that, though they'd heard the casualty numbers many times as the war progressed, they could not believe how many names were on the lists, and how many flags there were to place. Many left the memorial completely dumbfounded by the quantity.

Thank you to all the Marinette Dems that helped put the booth together this year, and helped staff the booth. This is the best fair for us in years, and we had more visitors than I can ever remember.

NOTE: There are more pictures on the site, but I can't post them all here now.
