First Lady steps in to defuse anger at Bush Telegraph.co.uk
The White House has turned to its most popular performer in an effort to rebuff criticism of its handling of Hurricane Katrina. Laura Bush, the normally mildly spoken First , is defending her husband in defiant terms - describing some of the criticism of President George W Bush as "disgusting".

Her remarks came as Mr Bush's attempt to defuse public anger by replacing the man in charge of the recovery operation appeared to have fallen flat. Although Michael Brown, the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, was recalled to Washington, he was not sacked from his job - and President Bush's approval ratings continues to hover at an all-time low.

To All My Fellow Americans Who Voted for George W. Bush:

On this, the fourth anniversary of 9/11, I'm just curious, how does it feel?

How does it feel to know that the man you elected to lead us after we were attacked went ahead and put a guy in charge of FEMA whose main qualification was that he ran horse shows?

That's right. Horse shows.

I really want to know -- and I ask you this in all sincerity and with all due respect -- how do you feel about the utter contempt Mr. Bush has shown for your safety? C'mon, give me just a moment of honesty. Don't start ranting on about how this disaster in New Orleans was the fault of one of the poorest cities in America. Put aside your hatred of Democrats and liberals and anyone with the last name of Clinton. Just look me in the eye and tell me our President did the right thing after 9/11 by naming a horse show runner as the top man to protect us in case of an emergency or catastrophe.

I want you to put aside your self-affixed label of Republican/conservative/born-again/capitalist/ditto-head/right-winger and just talk to me as an American, on the common ground we both call America.

Are we safer now than before 9/11? When you learn that behind the horse show runner, the #2 and #3 men in charge of emergency preparedness have zero experience in emergency preparedness, do you think we are safer?

When you look at Michael Chertoff, the head of Homeland Security, a man with little experience in national security, do you feel secure?

When men who never served in the military and have never seen young men die in battle send our young people off to war, do you think they know how to conduct a war? Do they know what it means to have your legs blown off for a threat that was never there?

Do you really believe that turning over important government services to private corporations has resulted in better services for the people?

Why do you hate our federal government so much? You have voted for politicians for the past 25 years whose main goal has been to de-fund the federal government. Do you think that cutting federal programs like FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers has been good or bad for America? GOOD OR BAD?

With the nation's debt at an all-time high, do you think tax cuts for the rich are still a good idea? Will you give yours back so hundreds of thousands of homeless in New Orleans can have a home?

Do you believe in Jesus? Really? Didn't he say that we would be judged by how we treat the least among us? Hurricane Katrina came in and blew off the facade that we were a nation with liberty and justice for all. The wind howled and the water rose and what was revealed was that the poor in America shall be left to suffer and die while the President of the United States fiddles and tells them to eat cake.

That's not a joke. The day the hurricane hit and the levees broke, Mr. Bush, John McCain and their rich pals were stuffing themselves with cake. A full day after the levees broke (the same levees whose repair funding he had cut), Mr. Bush was playing a guitar some country singer gave him. All this while New Orleans sank under water.

It would take ANOTHER day before the President would do a flyover in his jumbo jet, peeking out the widow at the misery 2500 feet below him as he flew back to his second home in DC. It would then be TWO MORE DAYS before a trickle of federal aid and troops would arrive. This was no seven minutes in a sitting trance while children read "My Pet Goat" to him. This was FOUR DAYS of doing nothing other than saying "Brownie (FEMA director Michael Brown), you're doing a heck of a job!"

My Republican friends, does it bother you that we are the laughing stock of the world?

And on this sacred day of remembrance, do you think we honor or shame those who died on 9/11/01? If we learned nothing and find ourselves today every bit as vulnerable and unprepared as we were on that bright sunny morning, then did the 3,000 die in vain?

Our vulnerability is not just about dealing with terrorists or natural disasters. We are vulnerable and unsafe because we allow one in eight Americans to live in horrible poverty. We accept an education system where one in six children never graduate and most of those who do can't string a coherent sentence together. The middle class can't pay the mortgage or the hospital bills and 45 million have no health coverage whatsoever.

Are we safe? Do you really feel safe? You can only move so far out and build so many gated communities before the fruit of what you've sown will be crashing through your walls and demanding retribution. Do you really want to wait until that happens? Or is it your hope that if they are left alone long enough to soil themselves and shoot themselves and drown in the filth that fills the street that maybe the problem will somehow go away?

I know you know better. You gave the country and the world a man who wasn't up for the job and all he does is hire people who aren't up for the job. You did this to us, to the world, to the people of New Orleans. Please fix it. Bush is yours. And you know, for our peace and safety and security, this has to be fixed. What do you propose?

I have an idea, and it isn't a horse show.

Yours,
Michael Moore

Remembering 9/11 - "Walk with me through this day" JREGrassroots
hile we break once more and remember our fallen neighbors, our family,
our friends, consider taking a moment to read an amazing and inspiring
speech in their honor.

This excerpt is from a CNC Breakfast speech by John Edwards in 2004 yet
it will forever be timeless. You may read the entire speech by visiting
the link here:

http://www.jregrassroots.org/forums/index....showtopic=16293

When you've finished, please feel free to leave a message of comfort
and support for those many people who are still living with the sorrow of
that day 4 years ago. They are our brothers & sisters, and just as they
will never forget, neither shall we.

Peace to you & yours.

-------------------------------------
John Edwards, 2004

---

Good morning.

Today, on this day of remembrance and mourning, we have the Lord's word
to get us through. "The bricks have fallen, but we will build with
dressed stones; the sycamores have been cut down, but we will put cedars in
their place."

And let me show you how we are building and putting cedars in those
three hallowed places-the footprints of the Towers, the Pentagon, and the
field in Pennsylvania. Walk with me through this day and you will see
that this is a season of hope.

For at this moment, just outside of New York, a mother laces up her
daughter's shoes. And they are ready to start their long walk through this
day. The daughter is two and a half. She can say his name, "Dad." She
can point to his picture, but she does not know him.

On this day, they go to Central Park to remember with the other
families. Then, they head downtown to place a flower where he died-the once
tall tower where he left his first, last and only message addressed to
her. And they return home still in their Sunday bests after a Saturday of
sorrow.

So walk with me through this day.

On the First Day, John Roberts's Reserve Is Confirmed Washington Post
By Marcia Davis. It was the moment for which the nation had been waiting -- okay, well, at least those who'd managed to get a seat in the hearing room in the Russell Building on Capitol Hill yesterday. The confirmation hearings for John G. Roberts Jr. were unfolding against the backdrop of Hurricane Katrina, and though a few senators mentioned it early on, as the day progressed in Room 325, its urgency seemed a million miles away. The caucus room with its high ceiling, huge columns and glittering chandeliers has been the site of other history-making moments. It was where in 1987 Robert Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court began its descent into defeat, and where Clarence Thomas crossed swords with Anita Hill. Yesterday, it was where Roberts finally spoke on his own behalf in his bid to become the next Supreme Court chief justice.

John Roberts spoke only briefly as a Senate panel opened hearings on his nomination to be chief justice. At left is former senator Fred Thompson. (By Bill O'leary -- The Washington Post)
A sea of media, 140 or so strong, and the few members of the public who managed to get seats in the very back of the room had been waiting through one senator's speech after another to hear the 50-year-old federal judge work his rhetorical magic. Here was the man who had argued 39 cases before the Supreme Court, and won most. Here was the man touted as a lawyer's lawyer, a man his colleagues have praised as knowing the power of combining legal brilliance with a cool confidence. And here was the man, who, if President Bush has his way, will be confirmed as the nation's 17th chief justice, elevated to a position that could shape the quality of life for Americans for decades to come. So, naturally, his words were what everyone wanted to hear. And speak he did -- for all of eight minutes. He was introduced shortly before 3:30, and he was done with his opening statement soon after.
Talk about judicial restraint. As does any lawyer, John Roberts knows that anything he says can be used against him. And so yesterday he was a man of "thank yous" -- to the senators lined up before him, to Bush for the nomination, to his family and his mentors without whose help and sacrifices he would not be sitting where he was, he said. He paid respects once again to the man whose casket he helped to carry up the Supreme Court steps last week, William H. Rehnquist. Roberts clerked for the chief justice, and in one of those odd, novel-like twists, he may soon replace him. "I talked last week with the nurses who helped care for him over the past year, and I was glad to hear from them that he was not a particularly good patient," Roberts said. "He chafed at the limitations they tried to impose. His dedication to duty over the past year was an inspiration to me and, I know, to many others." Roberts went on to speak of his philosophy, one that demands a limited role for judges. He compared them to umpires, adding, "Nobody ever went to a ballgame to see the umpire." Judges are more than umpires, of course, and Roberts tried to assure the panel that his thinking has evolved since his early eager days as a young lawyer working in the Republican administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. When the questioning begins, there will be those who will press him to be more revealing. But yesterday Roberts spent most of the day in silence, sitting through the 10-minute speeches of the Judiciary Committee members, which added up to hours. Roberts was as still as he was silent, his face a wall. His lips were a tight line, except on the few occasions when he laughed at a joke -- mainly the recurring one about his relative youth and appearance of good health. There were times, too, when someone seemed to make a point that he appreciated, and he would reward that senator with the slightest of nods, as when Joseph Biden (D-Del.) talked about the issues of technology and privacy that no doubt the high court would face in the future. There were what passed for harsh words from Democratic senators such as New York's Charles Schumer, who warned that he would be unsparing in his questioning, and California's Dianne Feinstein, who said she would be unable to vote for anyone she believed would overturn Roe v. Wade. And there were words of encouragement from Republicans such as Orrin Hatch, who warned Roberts not to be trapped into answering questions that compromised him as a judge. Roberts took it all in, his eyes often wide and glistening under the glare of the camera lights, but revealing nothing. It was representative democracy at work, though it was occurring in a room where if you didn't know better, you might think democracy was almost exclusively white. The Judiciary Committee itself is all white, and Feinstein is its only female member. "Things went as I expected," said Ted Shaw of the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund. "I think Roberts's opening statement was eloquent. I've seen him in court. But the question for me is who is he." Roberts's moments of greatest animation occurred before the hearings began, when he sat with his wife, Jane, and children, Jack and Josie. Jack wore a suit with shorts and a bow tie. Josie wore a blue dress and a bow in her hair. It was a moment reminiscent of the summer day when Bush first nominated Roberts to replace Sandra Day O'Connor. Jack didn't dance this time, though. He simply climbed into his father's lap. The cameras flashed, and Roberts didn't have to say a word.

Koizumi's Landslide Victory TIME
Japan's Prime Minister wins an election widely seen as a referendum on his ambitious reform agenda. With obstacles removed, can he follow through? Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi ran the most important election of his career as if he were the hero of a medieval revenge play—and vengeance, as they say, was his. After failing to push through a bill to privatize Japan's state postal system this summer, due largely to resistance within his own Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Koizumi dissolved the lower house of Parliament and called for snap elections, throwing all 480 seats up for grabs and putting his career, his party's tenuous majority and perhaps the economic and political future of the country on the line. As the polls closed Sunday night, it became clear that his gamble has paid off bigger than even his most enthusiastic boosters had hoped: in a landslide victory, the LDP secured 296 seats, its biggest majority since 1986.

Mass looting marks Palestinian 'day of glory' Globe and Mail
For Wissam Judeh, the first day since 1967 that Palestinians have been in control of the entire Gaza Strip was a moment for both jubilation and revenge. Moments after the Israeli army formally withdrew from Gaza yesterday morning, the 22-year-old student raced into this former Jewish settlement in the heart of Palestinian land to see what life on the other side of the fence looked like after all these years. After taking in the tall palm trees, the neatly groomed beaches, and the piles of rubble that once were the settlers' homes, he made a beeline for the abandoned synagogue, now looted and blackened by fire after being attacked by throngs of Palestinians.

Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.: "One of the most important issues that needs to be addressed by you is the constitutional right to privacy. I'm concerned by a trend on the court to limit this right and thereby to curtail the autonomy that we have fought for and achieved . . . Levar Haley Washington, 25, and Gregory Vernon Patterson, 21, were held without bail after their pleas in U.S. District Court. Prosecutors contend the plot was orchestrated by Washington, Patterson and Hammad Riaz Samana, 21, at the behest of Kevin James, an inmate of the California State Prison, Sacramento.

Italy to extradite London bombing suspect CBC News
Italy's highest court upheld a decision to extradite London bombing suspect Hamdi Issac to Britain. A British citizen also known as Osman Hussain, Issac was arrested on an international warrant in the Italian capital on July 29, 2005. The decision by the Court of Cassation cannot be appealed. Issac will be transferred to Britain within 10 days, said Paolo Iorio, a lawyer representing the British government. Last month Issac was ordered extradited to Britain, but the decision was appealed. His lawyer claimed that poor documentation of evidence and "heightened tension" in Britain might affect proceedings.

Merkel urged to rejig team for German vote Reuters
By Noah Barkin. BERLIN, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Front-runner Angela Merkel's party urged her to ditch her shadow finance minister on Tuesday as worries mounted that the momentum had swung to her rival, Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, five days before Germans vote. The calls came after a series of opinion polls over the past week showed the conservatives losing their once commanding lead over Schroeder's Social Democrats. Polls now point to a dead heat between the main parties, opening up the prospect of a prolonged period of political uncertainty.

11 children found locked in cages Independent
Sheriff's deputies in Ohio have found 11 children locked in cages less than three-and-a-half feet high inside a home, but a couple have denied they had abused or neglected the children. A judge yesterday put the children - who range in age from 1 to 14 and who have various disabilities, including autism - into foster homes. The children were found in nine cages built into the walls of the house near the small US city of Wakeman in northern Ohio, according to the Huron County Sheriff's Office. They had no blankets or pillows, and the cages were rigged with alarms that sounded if opened, said Lt. Randy Sommers.

Sad but not surpising Elizabeth Edwards
A MESSAGE FROM ELIZABETH EDWARDS
QUOTE("A MESSAGE FROM ELIZABETH EDWARDS")
Dear Friend,
The misery we all witnessed in New Orleans broke our hearts. The heroism of first responders and National Guard and volunteers and the perseverance of Gulf Coasters have stirred us again. But the backdrop for all of this is that the people in charge, the people who make the priorities and decide the agenda in the White House and in Congress, have been so callous in the last two weeks. It is troubling, but sadly it is not surprising. The Republican leadership has been disregarding the poor for decades, and the President's slow, indecisive response to this disaster - a disaster that came down hardest on the poorest people of the region - is a reminder of the immeasurable suffering that results from this disregard. It has to stop, and it can. It can if people like you continue to sign the New America Initiative. So far the response has been tremendous; thank you again for pledging your support. If we can add more signatures to the initiative, President Bush and Republicans in Congress won't be able to turn their backs any longer.
Pledge your support for our New America Initiative.
This disaster can awaken the best in our country. We need to start by acknowledging that thirty-seven million Americans - most of them from working families - live in poverty every day, and we need to empower our nation so that we can do something about it. Through our New America Initiative, we would not only rebuild the devastated Gulf; we would help the victims of this disaster rebuild their lives. Working together with local organizations, we would do the critical work of rebuilding the Gulf and the region - rebuilding homes, repairing infrastructure, and restoring hope across the region. But instead of doing that work with contractors from outside, we'd do it with the community members who have lost so much. We'd not only give them good jobs with benefits; we'd give them the skills and know-how so they can get better jobs in years to come. Right now our national community is focused on immediate needs, like food and shelter. And we need to be. But we also need to provide a chance to start over and to make life better than it was before. Our New America Initiative is one way to get that process started.
Pledge your support for our New America Initiative
We cannot expect that the Republican Congress or White House will come up with a plan that has the interests of all Americans in mind. In both their long-standing policies and their response to this disaster, their disregard and callousness have been painfully evident. Grover Norquist, a seminal thinker among the Republican leadership, has said that he wants government to be so weak that he could "drown it in a bathtub." That image is searing today. And he is wrong; we need a government strong enough to protect our people and to ensure hope and opportunity for all Americans, not just the wealthy.
Pledge your support for our New America Initiative
The thousands of people living along the Gulf Coast need help in two major ways: they need the opportunity to get back on their feet, and they need funding, training, and assistance so that they can rebuild the communities they've lost. Our New America Initiative takes on both of these challenges at once, and it does so by empowering those Americans who have worked and suffered in the shadows of the American dream for too long. Thank you again for stepping forward and telling President Bush that you want to see this New America Initiative in action, and thank you for taking this opportunity to encourage your friends to join us. If our nation acts strongly in response to this crisis, the people of the Gulf Coast can show their strength.
