Nader gets recount in New Hampshire

Washington, DC, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Former independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader will get his vote recount in 11 counties in New Hampshire, the Nader campaign said Friday.

After submitting their initial written request Nov. 5, the campaign was able to raise the $2,000 needed to begin a vote recount, after receiving an extension from the New Hampshire attorney general. According to the campaign, certain precincts appeared "suspicious" with an unusual number of votes favoring President George W. Bush.

The campaign wired its down payment, raised by small donations, to the secretary of state's office Friday.

According to campaign spokesman Kevin Zeese, the recount will not be statewide; it will cover only 11 counties and a total of 45,000 votes.

The campaign is responsible for demonstrating that it will be able to pay the total cost of the recount. Zeese said that the secretary of state's office had not yet asked them to explain how they were planning to pay for the vote recount.

Nader-Camejo Goes Forward with Hand Recount in New Hampshire
Washington, DC: The Nader-Camejo is going forward with a hand recount in New Hampshire. The recount will begin in areas where the vote favored President Bush in anomalous ways.

Nader-Camejo has requested a hand recount of the vote in New Hampshire because of reports of votes favoring President Bush in towns that used the Diebold AccuVote optical scan machines. The Nader-Camejo campaign received more than 2,000 faxes from citizens concerned about the vote count who urged the campaign to request a hand recount in New Hampshire. (Review the request for a hand recount in New Hampshire.)

“A hand recount will either rule out the possibility of machine error or show a discrepancy in the Diebold machine and the actual vote – either way voters need to know,” said Nader. “Regardless of whether it changes the electoral outcome, the Democrats should join us in this effort and follow through on their repeated promises to make sure every vote is counted – in Ohio and other states.”

Voting-rights groups and others have identified trouble spots and irregularities in several states meriting further investigation. The Nader-Camejo campaign is working with voting rights activists on these concerns.

“Turning over the counting of votes to corporations gives new meaning to the term ‘corporate power,’” said Nader. “Three or four proprietary corporations being given the authority to count the vote on trade secreted software undermines the transparency of elections. With other obstructions and massive corporate campaign cash, they threaten the very foundation of our democracy – its elections.”

The Nader-Camejo campaign does not view the election to be over merely because concession speeches, which have no legal effect, have been delivered. Rather they are over when every vote is counted and legally certified.

Any precincts with optical scanners should be recounted also, since alot of problems were seen with those as well.

State approves Nader recount
November 12, 2004

CONCORD, N.H. -- State election officials agreed Friday to a last-minute recount of the presidential race requested by Ralph Nader.

Nader asked for a recount in 11 wards last week, but the state initially said no because his request did not include the $2,000 fee. He had until 4:30 p.m. Friday to get the money to the Secretary of State's office.

The fee is required of candidates who lose by more than 3 percentage points. Democrat John Kerry won the state with 50 percent to Bush's 49 percent. Nader had just under 1 percent.

The state agreed to the recount Friday after Nader's campaign electronically transferred the fee Friday afternoon.

Nader's campaign said some voting machines in the state logged results that favored President Bush by as much as 15 percent over what previous trends and exit polls would suggest.

Nader requested hand recounts in Litchfield, Sandown, Newton, Danville, Salem, Pelham, one ward in Somersworth and four wards in Manchester.

Nader's campaign could be required to pay additional fees as the recount proceeds. There was no estimate as to when the recount might begin.

Nader spokesman Kevin Zeese said the campaign would consider requesting additional recounts after reviewing the results of the initial 11.

Nader/Camejo Challenge Electronic Voting Results in New Hampshire
Washington, DC:The Nader/Camejo campaign has filed a challenge to the voting results in New Hampshire after receiving numerous complaints from voting rights activists. Below is Nader's letter to New Hampshire requesting a recount. Also, below is Nader's view on electronic voting without a paper trial. In addition, the Nader/Camejo campaign offered our campaign to poll watchers who wanted to be credentialed to be inside to monitor electronic voting.

Hundreds of democracy activists in Maryland working with TrueVoteMD.org were credentialed to monitor polling through the Populist Party which was created by Nader-Camejo supporters in Maryland.

To The Secretary of State of New Hampshire:

The Nader/Camejo campaign requests a hand recount of the ballots in the presidential election in New Hampshire. Numerous voting rights activists have requested that we seek a recount of this vote.

We have received reports of irregularities in the vote reported on the AccuVote Diebold Machines in comparison to exit polls and trends in voting in New Hampshire. These irregularities favor President George W. Bush by 5% to 15% over what was expected. Problems in these electronic voting machines and optical scanners are being reported in machines in a variety of states.

We are requesting that the state undertake this recount or a statistically significant sample audit of these vote counts.

We would like to make sure every vote counts and is counted accurately.

Sincerely,

Ralph Nader

Paperless Electronic Voting
A bedrock of democracy is making sure that every vote counts. The counting of votes needs to be transparent so people can trust that their vote is counted as they cast it. Paperless electronic voting on touch screen machines does not provide confidence to ensure votes are counted the way voters intend. The software on which votes are counted is protected as a corporate trade secret and the software is so complex that if malicious code was embedded no analysis could discover it. Further, because there is no voter verified paper record, it is not possible to audit the electronic vote for accuracy, nor is it possible to conduct an independent recount. This Primary Day six million voters will be voting on paperless electronic voting machines. This is a grotesquely designed, over-complicated expensive system fraught with the potential for mistakes and undetected fraud.

On July 23, 2003 the Johns Hopkins Information Security Institute reviewed the electronic voting system in Maryland and found that it had security “far below even the most minimal security standards . . . .” Johns Hopkins computer security experts concluded: “If we do not change the process of designing our voting systems, we will have no confidence that our election results will reflect the will of the electorate.”

Computers are inherently subject to programming error, equipment malfunction, and malicious tampering. If we are to ensure fair and honest elections, and retain voter confidence in our democratic process, we need to ensure that there are no such questions. Therefore, it is crucial that any computerized voting system provide a voter-verifiable paper audit trail and that random audits of electronic votes be conducted on Election Day. Paperless electronic voting machines make it impossible to safeguard the integrity of our vote thereby threatening the very foundation of our democracy.

The seller of the machines, the Diebold Corporation, is a supplier of money to one of the major party candidates, George W. Bush. The CEO and top officers of Diebold are major contributors to the Bush campaign. This does not pass the smell test. Voters should report immediately any suspected malfunctions and deficiencies at voting precincts around the country to their Board of Elections. And voters should urge their legislators to require a voter verified paper ballot trail for random audits and independent recounts.

That map of the counties is out and doesn't work.

Also there's more than 110 wards and Nader is going through part of them...

nader is only looking at 11 wards, and if the discrepancy is significant then a full recount is going to be requested
iaclassic
According to this article, Nader has until this coming Friday to pay the required fee.
