If the NRA would ever endorse a Democratic candidate, it would have been in this election.

Tim Kaine on Second Amendment Rights

(click here for a printer-friendly version)
Tim Kaine strongly supports the Second Amendment. As the next Governor of Virginia, he will not propose any new gun laws. Instead Tim Kaine will guarantee strict enforcement of our existing criminal laws. He will also expand the use of such enforcement strategies as Project Exile that target criminals who use guns rather than law-abiding gun owners.

Both the Constitution of the United States of America and the Constitution of Virginia guarantee that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

In addition, the Virginia constitution also protects the right to hunt. When that tradition came under attack by animal-rights groups, Tim Kaine helped defend the constitutional amendment in court.

As Mayor of Richmond, Tim Kaine helped implement “Project Exile.” The initiative successfully coordinated the work of federal, state, and local law enforcement officials in maximizing the punishment of criminals who commit crimes with guns. Project Exile helped cut Richmond’s violent crime rate in half. As then National Rifle Association President Charlton Heston said in praise of Project Exile, “Believe me, not many felons carry firearms in Richmond anymore.”

In a similar fashion, Tim Kaine’s “Juvenile Exile” initiative is designed to toughen state law against juvenile offenders by strengthening punishments for youths who commit crimes with guns. Current state law does not allow courts to sentence youths to a juvenile facility until their fourth illegal gun possession offense.

In Tim Kaine’s view, Project Exile and Juvenile Exile provide a powerful illustration of the right way to combat the problem of gun violence: crack down on the criminals who use guns instead of restricting the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

From the Roanoke.com

"She said Kaine failed the NRA "litmus test" for its endorsement, which involves a pledge to repeal the state's law limiting handgun sales to one per month. "There was no way we were going to get that endorsement," Skinner said, because Kaine has said he would not do that.

"What we saw four years ago was an attack on Mark Warner and Tim Kaine when they were running for office, saying they would take guns away, and four years later, they've not done that," Skinner said. "What they have done is put the state on the right fiscal track, they've invested in public safety, invested in education, and created one of the fastest growing job markets in the country."'

This sounds like a "expletive deleted" reason to not endorse Kaine and instead endorse Kilgore. thumbdown.gif

Sounds like this endorsement is a big deal in Virginia - too bad for Kaine but maybe it won't make any difference in the long run. I'm not knowlegeable about he NRA - are you a member?

FWIW...I would not support a candidate that supports the "one gun a month" measure. Again...this only effects the law abiding, and not the criminal.

It appears to be a pretty big deal there just as it is all over the South. I don't understand where they got the grade of "F" from. No, i'm not a member nor will i ever be if they keep politicizing the 2nd Amendment with an intention of beating Democrats in campaigns.
