Shouldn't it be going up since the Assault Weapons Ban wasn't extended?

Those of us who follow this declining trend are not surprised. Of course it has nothing to do with gun control, but the hysterical gun-busters would want you to think the crime is out of control, and the preverbal sky is falling...How pathetic for them.

Gun control has little to do with the homicide rate. Economic conditions and social change have a far greater impact.
Western Upper Michigan was a rather wild place a hundred years ago. With the copper mines in operation and immigrants coming in from all parts of Europe to work in them, it was like a mini-Balkans. The various nationalites hated and despised each other in Europe and they brought their views and attitudes with them when they moved here.
That had all pretty much dissapated by the time I was born but I do recall the stories told by the now long gone old timers.
