The Supreme Court nomination of Harriet Miers is in trouble and would fail if the Senate had to vote now, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer said yesterday. "I think you have concern on these three areas - qualifications, independence, judicial philosophy - by people of both parties in all political stripes," he said. Miers, "The Gathering Storm" YubaNet
The White House Counsel's Office is home to some of the best, brightest and busiest conservative lawyers in the country. Among their duties: vetting the responses of Supreme Court nominees as the hopefuls navigate their way through the Senate. But the president's lawyers were stretched a bit thin this month as they double-checked the answers of the latest nominee, who just happens to be their boss, Harriet Miers. Why? Partly because so much of Miers's record is shrouded in the secrecy of her private legal advice, especially for clients like George W. Bush. And partly because they're working on other pressing matters-like digging up documents in response to multiple inquiries into Hurricane Katrina. "It's absurd," said one former administration official, who declined to be named because of the fragile state of the Miers nomination. "They really should have just said, 'We have too much on our plate'."

There’s no shortage of schadenfreude being experienced over The New York Times’ problems. Those with one bone or another to pick with Judy Miller, bloggers who chant the mantra of MSM demise and critics of the war in Iraq are just a few who are reveling in the now-very public internal fighting at the paper. I say good for The Times. Not praise for the mess they find themselves in, surely. Miller’s pre-war stories about weapons of mass destruction, the paper’s apology for them, not to mention Miller’s still-curious role in the Valerie Plame case are among the things the Times’ has been suffering from for some time, and will continue to haunt them in the foreseeable future. US Casualty Toll Hits 2000 in Iraq Chosun Ilbo
The US military death toll in Iraq officially reached two thousand on Tuesday, with the announcement of the death of a soldier who was injured last week. The figure includes 427 troops whose deaths were not directly related to combat operations. Speaking shortly before the announcement, President Bush said the American sacrifice in Iraq has been worthwhile, and more sacrifice will be needed before the war against terrorism is finally won. His name was George T. Alexander Junior. He was a 34-year-old staff sergeant from Texas, President Bush's home state. Sergeant Alexander died on Saturday at a military hospital not far from his home, of injuries he received five days earlier in the Iraqi town of Samarra. Like many of the other U.S. casualties in Iraq, his death was caused by a roadside bomb that detonated near his vehicle.

Could John Kerry Have Won The State Of Ohio? wtov9.com
A new study finds that John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign made several crucial mistakes in Ohio. The study says the Kerry campaign bullied its way into a traditional Ohio democratic stronghold and ignored local party officials and their knowledge of the area. The study contends Kerry brought in outsiders to run the Mahoning County campaign, staged poorly organized events and angered union leaders. Political consultant Greg Haas says if the Kerry people had been listening to their state director and the local parties, they could have won the state comfortably. Copyright 2005 by wtov9.com. Kerry calls for 20,000 troops to come home by year's end Eyewitness News
WASHINGTON Senator John Kerry is calling on the Bush administration to bring home 20-thousand troops from Iraq over the Christmas holiday -- if the December elections in Iraq are successful. In a speech prepared for delivery in Washington today, the Massachusetts Democrat also calls for further pullouts as power is handed over to Iraqi officials. Kerry's call for a phased, conditional draw-down of American military forces came one day after the Pentagon announced the U-S death total in Iraq had reached the two-thousand mark. The 2004 Democratic presidential nominee criticizes Bush and outlines a 12-to-15 month plan to stabilize Iraq and end America's troop presence there. The Associated Press obtained excerpts from the speech -- which is to be delivered this afternoon at Georgetown University.

John Kerry Urges Administration to Re-Open Miami Disaster Assistance Center; SBA Closed Loan Center One Week Ago YAHOO! NEWS
A day after Hurricane Wilma ravaged Florida, Senator
John Kerry today asked the head of the Small Business Administration (SBA) to reconsider the agency's decision last week to close the temporary loan assistance center in Miami. "Talk about poor planning. Closing a disaster loan center days before a major hurricane hits the region is absurd," said Kerry, top Democrat on the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee. "It doesn't make any sense for the SBA to close a Miami office until it was sure people and small businesses in the area wouldn't need the extra help. Sadly, this is another example of the administration being completely out-of-touch with the small business owners they are supposed to be helping." On Oct. 19, the SBA closed one of the two temporary loan assistance centers in Miami. At the same time, Hurricane Wilma was measured as the most powerful storm ever recorded in the Atlantic and the weather forecasts were indicating Florida was a likely target. In his letter to the SBA, Kerry repeated his frustration with the SBA's disaster loan process in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. As of last Friday, the SBA had received over 160,000 disaster loan applications and had approved just 2,865. Of those approved loans, only 203 were for small businesses. "Given the history of hurricanes in the state, the forecasts, and the chronic problems of the SBA in meeting the disaster loan needs of Katrina and Rita victims, it is unclear why the SBA would give up this location and its staff until it was sure the area would not need the backup support for those small businesses and homes damaged in the area and any evacuees who end up stranded there," Kerry wrote. After a disaster, the SBA offers loans to repair damaged homes and businesses. Individuals can go to the SBA's temporary loan assistance centers to meet in person with an SBA loan officer in the affected regions.

Kerry urges post-election troop reduction in Iraq Kron4.ocm
Senator John Kerry says the U-S should bring 20-thousand troops home for Christmas if the December elections are successful. He also urges more pullouts as power shifts to Iraqi officials. The former presidential candidate's comments are in a speech prepared for delivery today at Georgetown University in Washington. It comes just one day after the number of U-S troops killed in Iraq reached the two-thousand mark. Kerry says a large U-S presence deters peace efforts in Iraq. But he says he has a plan that would stabilize the country and end America's military presence there. It calls for a "reasonable time frame" for pulling back troops rather than a full-scale withdrawal that some other Democrats want. Kerry could make another run for the White House in 2008.

A critical time for Iraq
Dear Friend,
Later today, I will deliver a major speech on the war in Iraq.
It asks a hard and essential question: how do we bring our troops home within a reasonable and responsible timeframe, while achieving what needs to be achieved in Iraq?
One thing is certain. It isn't by continuing to pursue the Bush administration's "stay for as long as it takes" rhetoric. And it isn't by blindly following their policy of cutting and running from the truth that underlies that rhetoric.
That's why my speech today will call on the Bush administration to immediately draw up -- and present to Congress and the American people -- a detailed plan with target dates for the transfer of military and police responsibilities to Iraqis so the majority of our combat forces can be withdrawn.
I hope you'll take a moment to read excerpts from this critically important call to action on Iraq.
http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/speeche...2005_10_26.html
My speech today will assert that there is no reason Iraq cannot be relatively stable, no reason the majority of our combat troops can't soon be on their way home, and no reason we can't take on a new role in Iraq, as an ally not an occupier, training Iraqis to defend themselves by the end of 2006.
Today of all days, it is important to note that instead of attacking Ambassador Wilson's report, instead of attacking his wife to justify attacking Iraq, the Bush administration should have simply paid attention to what his report revealed.
As I write this, we are waiting to learn whether the administration's attacks will prove to be an indictable offense in a court of law. But for its CIA leaks, and for misleading a nation into war, the Bush administration will most certainly be indicted in the high court of history.
Sadly, there have been a legion of Bush administration miscalculations that have left us having far too few options in Iraq.
It is never easy to discuss what has gone wrong while our troops are in constant danger. I know this dilemma first-hand. After serving in war, I returned home to offer my own personal voice of dissent. I did so because I believed strongly that we owed it to those risking their lives to speak truth to power. We still do.
In fact, while some say we can't ask tough questions because we are at war, I say no -- in a time of war we must ask the hardest questions of all. No matter what President Bush says, asking tough questions isn't pessimism, it's patriotism. If you agree, I urge you to join me in demanding a new course in Iraq. You can start by making sure as many people as possible see this speech.
http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/speeche...2005_10_26.html
The American people -- most importantly, the families of the brave men and women serving in Iraq -- can no longer tolerate George W. Bush's failure to spell out a reasonable and detailed plan of action on Iraq. If the President refuses to act, we must call on Congress to take the decision out of his hands.
I urge you to read the speech I plan to deliver at Georgetown University in a matter of hours -- and to forward it to as many people as possible. Most of all, I hope you will resolve to join the entire johnkerry.com community in the weeks ahead as we work to create an undeniable groundswell of public pressure for a detailed, date-specific plan of action on Iraq.
Sincerely,
John Kerry
