I was doing some web page work for my history classes today and ran across the original "What's the Matter with Kansas?" speech. Lo and behold, as I'm working on my Amazon wish list, one of my recommendations is a book with the same title.

Obviously, the book deals with modern politics and how Conservatives dominate the Midwest (a la many of the conversations on here) and what Dems need to do to retake the middle. I haven't heard of it until today, so, has anyone read it?

Check out the Kansas subforum in the State Section here to see what we Kansans really think.

I noticed that forum seemed to take off the past 24 hours. Now I see KG is reading this. I was just hoping someone had read the book. smile.gif

Sorry, no, I haven't read it, but have read lots ABOUT it. Since I moved from Kansas 18 years ago, it has changed dramatically based on what I've heard in this book and still keeping up with the political climate. I was fortunate to grow up in a very diverse, middle class, middle America neighborhood that I felt contributed much to my values, opinions, tolerance of others, etc. Hence, why I chose the KG name! At that time in the 60-70's growing up there it was wonderful. But of course my wonderful, encouraging, tolerant parents also had a lot to do with that good upbringing! biggrin.gif

Kansasgirl, there is much in the book that is false. Or maybe "obtuse" is a better word to use.

I tend to attack people who fail to give Kansas credit for electing a DEMOCRAT as governor and who continue to bash us and laugh at us. Governor Sebelius is considered invincible in her upcoming reelection bid, and things are changing elsewhere as well in Kansas.

I think the problem is principally that of being unaware of politics due to Kansans working so hard -- maybe more than in other states -- and they just don't have time. Then there is Bob Dole, from Kansas, who did a lot for the state.

But the times they are a-changing, and the young are leading the way.

And then there's Paul Morrison, who is showing the way.

No offense intended - sorry! Yes, Gov. Sebelius is great! I was very pleased to see that both she and my Gov. Napolitano was selected as one of the top 5 governor's in the U.S. a couple of weeks ago. Just too bad the wing nuts like Fred Phelps and the I.D. folks get the publicity for the state when the rest ARE hard working, caring people.

I know no offense was intended!

Are you coming back any time to visit? Lawrence ROCKS.
