Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Emir of Kuwait, Dies Bloomberg
Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, the ruler and Emir of Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion in 1990, died this morning at age 78, the country's information ministry said in a statement. His cousin, the ailing Crown Prince Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah, who is 77 years old according to the Web site of Kuwait's royal court, is next in line to become the nation's fourth Emir since it gained independence from the U.K. in 1961. "He was sick for a very long time and his death could be an opportunity to bring in some fresh blood and revitalize the government,'' Anthony Harris, a former U.K. ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, a neighboring Persian Gulf Arab monarchy, said in a telephone interview from Dubai today.

Iranian parliament backs stop to IAEA inspections Monsters and Critics.com
Teheran - The Iranian parliament on Sunday backed threats to stop inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if the Iranian nuclear case is brought before the United Nations Security Council. State news agency IRNA quoted parliamentary speaker Gholam-Ali Hadad-Adel as saying that in such a case, parliament would insist on the implementation of a bill approved in November 2005 obliging the government to suspend implementation of the IAEA additional protocol, which also includes IAEA inspections of nuclear sites in Iran.

Tribunal: Saddam Judge Wants to Resign Houston Chronicle
The Iraqi tribunal confirmed Sunday that the chief judge in Saddam Hussein's trial has asked to resign but it has not decided whether to accept it. Rizgar Mohammed Amin submitted his resignation for "personal" reasons, the tribunal said, and not because of government pressure. It said the trial against Saddam and seven co-defendants would again convene on Jan. 24 as previously scheduled despite the uncertainties surrounding Amin. A judge serving on the five-judge panel Amin heads told The Associated Press that the tribunal hadn't decided whether to accept Amin's resignation or whether another judge might be appointed to take his place.

UK's Straw says up to Iran to prove its nuclear intentions Forbes
It is up to Iran to reassure the international community that it really is not pursuing the development of nuclear weapons, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said. Speaking at a security in London, where senior diplomats were holding a closed-door meeting on Iran, Straw underlined the danger of weapons of mass destruction falling into the hands of terrorists. 'This is why the international community's stand against Iran's continued non-compliance with its Non-Proliferation Treaty obligations and successive resolutions of the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency is so important,' he said.

GOP Hopes Ney Removal Will Aid Reform Forbes
The House Republican leadership has achieved its goal of separating Rep. Bob Ney, the committee chairman implicated in a burgeoning scandal, from GOP efforts to change how Congress interacts with lobbyists and their clients. With Ney's decision - under pressure - to temporarily step down from chairing the powerful House Administration Committee, the six-term Ohio Republican won't have any control over his party's efforts to stem the damage caused by disgraced GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff. As administration committee chairman, Ney would have overseen those reforms. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., wanted to make sure that didn't happen and asked Ney last week to step aside as chairman of the panel.

A 15-year-old student mortally wounded by police in a school bathroom while brandishing a pellet gun was remembered as an emotionally troubled but friendly teen. Specter Vows a Close Look at Spy Program New York Times
Senator Arlen Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania, said Sunday that Republicans would not grant President Bush "a blank check" in seeking to determine whether the domestic eavesdropping program that Mr. Bush authorized after the Sept. 11 attacks violated the law. "Just because we're of the same party doesn't mean we're not going to look at this closely," Mr. Specter said in an appearance on "This Week" on ABC. Mr. Specter is chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which plans to hold hearings on the matter next month, with witnesses to include Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales. The program authorized by Mr. Bush bypassed a special federal court whose approval is required under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act for domestic eavesdropping operations. Mr. Specter has said he does not agree with the White House view that Congress effectively authorized the surveillance, which was carried out by the National Security Agency, in a resolution passed shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks.

A Stellar Re-entry Contra Costa Times
Sunday's spectacular landing of the Stardust capsule is just the start for a half-dozen Bay Area labs that are on the fast track to examine its exotic haul: a thimbleful of space dust. Scientists hope it will help reveal our deepest origins: How the sun and planets were born 4.6 billion years ago, and how the stars themselves helped to seed life on Earth. "I'm elated," said Richard Zare, a chemist at Stanford University whose laboratory helped analyze the famous Mars meteorite for signs of fossil life. "We have to still do the work," he said Sunday. "Today we don't know any more than we did yesterday. But we do know that we can do this -- it's proven. And that's exciting." The capsule parachuted to a landing in the Utah desert at 2:10 a.m. Sunday after an epic journey of 2.88 billion miles, bearing the first samples ever brought back from a comet.

Socialist Doctor and Former Political Prisoner Elected as Chile's First Female President. Michelle Bachelet's path to Chile's presidency has taken her from a dictator's jail cell to exile in East Germany and back home as a respected defense minister. Her rise to power stunned many Chileans who thought a socialist single mother jailed during Gen. Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship stood little chance in this conservative Catholic country where divorce is a touchy issue. Bachelet, the first woman to be elected president in Chile, won 53 percent of the vote in Sunday's runoff, compared to 46 percent for Sebastian Pinera, a conservative wealthy businessman, according to official results.

Gore accuses Bush of breaking law Houston Chronicle
Former Vice President Al Gore accused President Bush of breaking the law by authorizing wiretaps on US citizens without court warrants and called on Congress Monday to reassert its oversight responsibilities on a "shameful exercise of power" by the White House. "The president of the United States has been breaking the law repeatedly and insistently," Gore said in a speech at Constitution Hall in Washington. "A president who breaks the law is a threat to the very structure of our government." To restore a system of checks and balances to government, Gore proposed appointing a special counsel to look into the domestic surveillance program, developing new whistle-blower protections and not extending the Patriot Act. He urged members of Congress, only one of whom — Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. — was present, to "start acting like the independent and co-equal branch of government you're supposed to be."

The Iran Nuclear Dispute Deutsche Welle
Despite new talks between Iran and the European troika of Britain, France and Germany, on Jan. 10 Tehran announced it would resume sensitive nuclear research linked to uranium enrichment. Iran insists on its right to make fuel for nuclear reactors, which it says will only be used for peaceful means, but the West fears it could use the fuel to manufacture atomic bombs. The EU-3 have responded by calling for an emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Europeans and the United States are hopeful that the UN watchdog will refer Iran to the UN Security Council for breaching nuclear non-proliferation agreements and IAEA resolutions. However, Russia and China -- along with Britain, France, and the US permanent members of the Security Council -- have been more reluctant. Iran, for its part, has warned that referral to the Security Council would lead to serious consequences, such as it to cutting off all cooperation with the IAEA.

Human Rights Watch Says US Policy Undermines Global Human Rights Voice of America
A leading human rights organization has accused the Bush administration of using torture and inhuman treatment of detainees as a deliberate strategy in its war on terror. Human Rights Watch charges in a new report that the treatment of detainees has undermined the United States' ability to champion human rights around the world. Human Rights Watch says policy decisions from senior Bush administration officials have created an atmosphere tolerant of abuse. The organization's executive director, Kenneth Roth, says it became clear this past year that torture and inhuman treatment are not simply the unintentional byproducts of these policy decisions.

Nasa hopes winds calm to allow Pluto mission launch Ireland Online
Nasa scientists hope the third time is the charm for its $700m (€578.7m) unmanned mission to Pluto. The space agency planned to make a third attempt to launch the New Horizons probe from Cape Canaveral, Florida, today, a day after a storm knocked out power at the Maryland-based laboratory that will command the mission. Strong winds in Laurel, Maryland, knocked out power at the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and mission managers were wary of launching the spacecraft without back-up power at the facility. “The air conditioning was off. The flight controllers were sitting there wiping sweat,” said Alan Stern, the mission’s principal investigator. High winds at the launch pad also kept the spacecraft from lifting off on Tuesday.

Nikkei posts biggest daily pct gain in 3 months Scotsman
The Nikkei share average rose 2.31 percent, its biggest one-day percentage gain in three months, on Thursday as investors returned to Toyota Motor Corp. and other top firms after sharp falls and an unprecendented early market closure the previous day. Hoya Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd. advanced following upgrades from brokerage firms, while Softbank Corp. surged after a steep two-day drop. "Blue-chip companies have nothing to do with the Livedoor investigation, and investors are picking them up on dips. It's a kind of flight to quality," said Takahiko Murai, general manager of equities at Nozomi Securities

Fuel prices widen losses for American Miami Herald
Southwest Airlines continues to profit from its low-priced fuel contracts as other airlines suffer huge losses. American Airlines parent AMR on Wednesday said its fourth-quarter loss widened, as the nation's biggest airline company wrestled with high fuel costs and competition with low-cost rivals. The same day, Southwest Airlines reported a 54 percent jump in fourth-quarter profit, as the bets it made on fuel prices allowed it to dodge for a little longer the spiraling costs that hit American. Revenue increased at both airlines, with planes more crowded and average fares higher. And airline stocks rallied, led by AMR Corp., which rose 47 cents, or 2.5 percent, to close at $19.33 in trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Ray Neidl, an analyst with Calyon Securities, said the stocks were lifted by a decline in oil prices, but that AMR also may have been rewarded for the strength of American's route network and a slightly smaller-than-expected loss.

NASA ecstatic over condition of particles Sydney Morning Herald
A technician unbolts a canister containing comet dust from the Stardust capsule at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. The seven-year project collected particles from a comet. NASA today was "ecstatic" and surprised over the condition and visibility of comet particles contained inside the tightly sealed canister that returned from a far-flung corner of the solar system on Sunday. The Stardust capsule was opened late on Tuesday at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston after a top security transport from the Dugway Proving Grounds in western Utah, where it ended its seven-year four-billion-kilometre journey to the comet Wild 2. Bill Jeffs, a spokesman for NASA, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur that some of the particles were so large they could be seen by the naked eye. He said NASA officials were "ecstatic" and "surprised" by the condition of the particles.

Energy prices boost inflation Houston Chronicle
Surging energy prices pushed consumer inflation to a five-year high in 2005, outpacing average wage gains for most American workers, the Labor Department reported Wednesday. The department's consumer price index, a widely followed inflation gauge, rose 3.4 percent last year, the fastest rate since 2000, largely reflecting climbing prices for fuel oil, gasoline, natural gas and electricity, the department said. However, workers' average pay rose more slowly. Average hourly wages fell 0.5 percent and average weekly earnings declined 0.4 percent, after adjusting for inflation, in the 12 months that ended in December, the department said in a separate report. Last year was the third year in a row in which real weekly wages fell, according to department data for the nation's 92 million private production and nonmanagerial service workers, who account for more than 80 percent of the work force.

Golden Globes: Chinese connection Hindustan Times
There is a whole world of difference between the overall value of the general run of Indian films and that of the cinema that emerges from China. That truism was driven home for the umpteenth time at the 63rd Golden Globe Awards on Monday night. While China registered its presence in no uncertain manner in several categories, India, as always, was conspicuous by its absence. Let’s begin right at the top of the heap. The evening belonged to the Taiwanese-born and raised Ang Lee and his newest Hollywood film, Brokeback Mountain, which won in four categories, including best dramatic film, best director and best screenplay. Lee is today a global force although he is still best known the world over for the sweeping martial arts epic Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, which, in 2000, redefined the world’s engagement with the colour and the flourish of Chinese fantasy.
