Indiana Senator Evan Bayh is with U.S. troops in Iraq this weekend.
Bayh is reacting to a new pentagon study that shows the U.S. needs to do more work to protect troops fighting in Iraq.
Dozens of wounds to Marines killed in Iraq could have been prevented or greatly reduced with improved body armor according to a Pentagon report. Senator Evan Bayh and other lawmakers say the report is disturbing and better body armor is a must for Americans fighting for freedom.
“Frankly, heads ought to roll if there are people who are responsible for not getting our troops the body armor they need to protect themselves. That is just not acceptable,” said Bayh.
Bayh spoke with reporters via satellite on Saturday from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.
On a trip with other members of congress, the senator met with Indiana soldiers on the front lines. He said, "They are some of the best we have to offer. Morale is good and I think I can say without hesitation we can be proud of the Hoosiers that are here representing us.”
There are indications the U.S. plans to withdraw at least 7,000 troops from Iraq this year. Bayh says Iraq now needs to take control and determine its own future.
“We have done our part and now they need to do their part. They need to form a new government that reflects the people of this country and finalize their constitution that provides majority rule but respects minority rights.”
After Iraq, Senator Bayh will go to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He's expected to return to the U.S. on Wednesday.
