Abramoff attened "staff level meetings" at the White House?????

I know that this shouldn't surprise me and I guess that I always assumed it had happened, but somehow hearing it from Scotty boy's mouth just floored me.

Abramoff was on Bush's transition team. I'll see if I can find the article to back that up. But I just read it a few days ago.

Found it! It's from the Rolling Stone web site, and it links to WaPo and Newsweek articles to back it up.

Abramoff in the (White) House

Now, I'm not too up on my presidential transition teams, but doesn't this Washington Post clip suggest that Abramoff actually worked for the Bush White House?

"With Norquist's help, Abramoff secured a spot on the transition team for the Interior Department after George W. Bush was elected president in 2000. He tried to place several officials in Interior, including an unsuccessful attempt to land a former Marianas official in the top spot overseeing U.S. territories."

Two points of interest: Interior oversees Indian (gaming) affairs, cash from which fueled Abramoff's K Street mafia. Interior also governs the Mariana Islands, whose Made In The USA sweatshop racket Abramoff was paid to protect.

UPDATE: This Newsweek piece gives Bush more credit than Abramoff's old College Republican crony Norquist: "Bush tapped Abramoff as member of his Presidential Transition Team, advising the administration on policy and hiring at the Interior Department."

For all we know, he led dick Cheney's energy meetings

I like what George Clooney said at the Golden Globes awards

He said what mother would name their son Jack, when the end of his name is OFF?

I saw the C-Span interview this evening and
enjoyed watching McClellan twist in the wind.

It seemed he wanted the reporter to give him
a transcript of the conversation before he
would admit there was one.

The reporter called Abramoff "radioactive"
and questioned why he was even let inside
the White House. Just old friends, McClellan
tried to say, but only met with staff. Thus he
wouldn't discuss staff-level meetings.

The facade has so many cracks you have to
wonder how it continues to stand up...and for
how long it will. thud.gif

I'll bet he was there as part of those. Hopefully, someone smart will find this crack in the Bush wall to get some real facts out about those meetings.

White House Silent on Abramoff Meetings

WASHINGTON - The White House is refusing to reveal details of tainted lobbyist Jack Abramoff's visits with
President Bush's staff.

Abramoff had "a few staff-level meetings" at the Bush White House, presidential spokesman Scott McClellan said Tuesday. But he would not say with whom Abramoff met, which interests he was representing or how he got access to the White House.

Since Abramoff pleaded guilty two weeks ago to conspiracy, mail fraud and tax evasion charges in an influence-peddling scandal, McClellan has told reporters he was checking into Abramoff's meetings. "I'm making sure that I have a thorough report back to you on that," he said in his press briefing Jan. 5. "And I'll get that to you, hopefully very soon."

McClellan said Tuesday that he checked on it at reporters' requests, but wouldn't discuss the private staff-level meetings.

He has said Abramoff attended three Hanukkah receptions at the White House, but corrected himself Tuesday to say there were only two — in 2001 and 2002.

McClellan said Bush does not know Abramoff personally, although it's possible the two met at the holiday receptions.

Abramoff was one of Bush's top fundraisers, having brought in at least $100,000 for the Bush-Cheney '04 re-election campaign and earning the honorary title "pioneer." The campaign took $6,000 of the contributions — which came directly from Abramoff, his wife and one of the Indian tribes he represented — and donated it to the
American Heart Association. But the campaign has not returned the rest of the money Abramoff raised.
