The following is the most recent post from www.cleanwaternotwalmart.org:

ATTENTION RESIDENTS OF NASHUA & AREA TOWNS

UPDATE 1/19/06 10PM: VICTORY!!!

The people of Nashua have won a major victory against sprawl, traffic gridlock, and increased pollution of our drinking water. The Planning Board voted 4-3 tonite to reject the site plan for the proposed Wal-Mart SuperCenter. This means the project is dead (except for possible Superior Court appeal).

We would like to commend Planning Board members George Torosian, Hugh Moran, Mike Lowe, Richard LaRose and City Engineer Steve Dookran for voting against the proposal and FOR the people of Nashua over the past 3 weeks. Each of them cited concerns about increased traffic and related safety issues on busy Amherst Street as a key factor in their decisions. If you see them around town, please extend your personal thanks!

This would not have been possible without the support of hundreds of Nashua citizens who have signed on to the cause, and the over 100 Nashua citizens who gave of their time to work, to show up again and again at City Hall to testify, to lend their support, and to endure hours of long hearings and late nights over the fall and winter.

We're pleased to say "There are NO upcoming city Hearings on the Wal-Mart SuperCenter!"

Where in Nashua were they planning to put it? I live fairly close to Nashua, but in MA.

They were attempting to take over the very large parcel where the Building 19 store is located on Amherst Street (State Rt 101-A) off Route 3, Exit 8. I can only imagine the traffic congestion that would have caused not to mention the valid water concerns. Besides, there's already a "SuperCenter" just about 5-6 miles away, also on Rt 101-A in Amherst. That is in addition to the one in Hudson. Why in the world would a third WalMart be justified in such a limited geographic area? I do indeed believe that WalMart wants to destroy locally-based commercial endeavors which I find appalling. As I mentioned in a post I made a few months ago on this same issue, one of the many reasons I chose Nashua as my new home when I relocated to New England was it's staunch stance on this issue. Nashua has again reaffirmed I made the right choice.

Nashua's a good place to be. I'm just over the border in Lowell, and I have friends in Nashua. And you are right, there is no reason for *3* Wal-Marts so close together.
