BushCo is lobbing their preemptive strike to blunt the "illegal spying" issue. Again they are tying it to that old worn-out saw "The war on terror". As if the ends justifies the means... which it doesn't.
Why aren't the Dems out in unison singing the truth... and showing Bush's BS for what it is... subterfuge.
Attacks on liberties are NOT justifiable. Liberties should be guarded and defended not run rough-shod over.
Laws are to be obeyed by ALL. Not even the President is above the law.
Obeying the law and protecting America against terrorist threats are not mutually exclusive. It is possible to achieve both.
Bush acted outside of his authority... and outside of the law... and it was NOT NECESSARY. THE laws necessary to spy LEGALLY are already on the books... and don't require any stretching or interpretation to follow. The laws work... and there is no necessity to go beyond what the law provides to fight terrorism.
The excuse of "War on terror" will be used as a never-ending ploy to maintain a permanent domestic spying program. There is no "enemy" in the war on terror so the "war" can never end. The law, however, is speaking to war against a foreign enemy not a war against a non-specific threat.
But... the Dems are not getting on message and are allowing themselves to be lured into the "If we object we are weak on security" BS. They need to blow that misinformation campaign out of the water well before it becomes the perception.
They have allowed BushCo to frame the issues and define them... and they are seemingly happy to just fall right in line with the propaganda.
They must control the language or they will be subject to GOP control until they do so. You would think by now they would be able to see the light and would have learned a little about GOP strategy and tactics... and would get a new game plan together.
